I bought this as a gift for my wife who loves Joan Hickson as Miss Marple. Now, I'd read about the deleted scenes etc., but threw caution to the wind and ordered anyway.

It was a safe bet it turned out, because she was over the moon, and having watched every single one now, has made zero comments about lost scenes. That's not to say there have not been cuts, but if there have been, they did not spoil her enjoyment. It could be that the ones she has seen on TV recently already had the scenes cut, I don't know. All I do know is, this is a bargain for what you get, just like the Poirot Collection she is working her way through now!

Academy award winning Dame Margret Rutherford is properly one if not the best loved eccentric actress of the post war cinema.

At the age of nearly 70, she first played the film role with which she was most often associated in later life, that of Miss Marple. In a series of four films (1961-1964) - loosely based on the novels of Agatha Christi - Margaret's portrayal of Miss Maple captured audiences worldwide now and then. . She took great umbrage when she learned that Christie herself had expressed concerns about Rutherford's ample figure, as Miss Marple was usually described as a trim, tallish spinster. Her acting sparkles, it is tough and touching. The language is just wonderful. All four movies are a great pleasure to watch. ... Read More:

After seeing the abysmal portrayal by Geraldine McEwan in the abomination that was the "Marple" series with (as if McEwan's interpretation of Miss Marple wasn't bad enough!) its preposterous political correctness, what a relief it was to once again see how Miss Marple is really meant to be portrayed. Joan Hickson is the definitive Miss Marple and if anyone is going to attempt to make another series, then they really should look to recreate Joan Hickson's performance, perhaps in some of Miss Marple's stories that weren't covered by these twelve.

As to this set of six dvds containing all twelve of the original series, it is very good value for money and interesting to see that they must have sourced different avenues for the stories contained here, ... Read More:

The other reviewer is partially correct inasmuch as Zoe Wanamaker , Elaine Paige and Geraldine McEwan do a first class job . One must not forget that Robert Pugh is excellent in his role too ! It is impressive that they managed to do this novel in 90 or so minutes when the Joan Hickson one was a three parter if memory serve me right . This adaptation is pretty cliched as lesbianism which is hinted at in the original novel & the Joan Hickson version is much more blatant in the Geraldine McEwan adaptation . This in your face approach confirms what the intelligent reader and/or viewer could have worked out for themselves . The location & the script are both spot on as is the casting - it has a great deal of drama and pace and so is a stunning piece of television ... Read More:

I've been an Murder Myster fan from I was very young, growing up with a mother who watched Miss Marple, Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poriot, Murder She Wrote etc. So, it was a difficult not to get interested and become a fan of these programmes. But I must admit my favourite is Miss Marple the old granny type who pretends to be a dottery but is so not, and always seems to outwit the male detectives and solve the cases before they can even figure it out. My two favourite Miss Marple actresses have been of course Margaret Rutherford and Joan Hickson, in my book they were the two that best fitted the part. So you can imagine that I wasn't to impressed when I heard that there where some new remakes of Miss Marple cases like 4.50 From Paddington, The Body in the Library, A Murder ... Read More:

Robert Powell , Tim McInnery , Derek Jacobi , Janet McTeer and Rachel Tier all do a very good job in a well filmed attempt to update the Miss Marple franchise . Geraldine McKewan is very brave to try and follow on after Joan Hickson and both of them have the merit of looking and sounding like the Miss Marple of the novels . It is a stunning TV Movie but the excecutions at the end are a bit distressing . But it does point out that thoughts of adultery & murder can give birth to death if not rooted out by a desire to stand before Our Lord in good conscience . In a way it is pleasing that Agatha Christie's works are being adapted for a modern early 21st Century audience but the harrowing conclusion of this episode could have been made less graphic by just having Miss Marple ... It was great to see James Fox , Joanna Lumley , David Walliams , Jamie Theakston and Tara Fitzgerald playing their parts so well . It was a very lavish & stunning piece of work - the bumbling , comic coppers take the edge off of an otherwise dark storyline . The real treat of course is Ian Richardson and one had to laugh at Miss Marple declining a lemonade and wanting a ginger wine ( plus a bit of whisky ! ) - what would Joan Hickson say !?! Miss McKewan plays the part like your favourite aunt who is unshockable and full of life . Fans of Joan Hickson might lament the lesbian twist at the end but as some of Agatha Christies novels had a gay/lesbian subtext ( like Five Little Pigs , Cards On The Table & A Murder Is Announced not to mention The Moving Finger ) you have to ... There she sits: A white-haired lady dressed in tweeds, a pair of knitting needles in her lap, more interested in village gossip than in the goings-on of the world at large - and out of nothing, she utters sentences like that.

For more likely than not, another murder has been committed; and Miss Jane Marple, elderly spinster from the village of St. Mary Mead, just happens to find herself near the scene of the crime. And also more likely than not, while the police are still toddling around searching for clues she'll find the solution - relying on her ever-unfailing "village parallels;" those seemingly innocuous incidents of village life that make up the sum of her knowledge of human nature, and to which she routinely turns in unmasking even the cleverest killer.
