This is my first posting on this site so forgive any newness!!

I have returned to Anime after a gap, in which a lot has changed in my life. I have to say that I was wonderfully suprised by the sensitivity of the depiction of emotion and the slow developement of the main characters and the intertwining of their lives through previously repressed memories. That it took almost up to the climactic confrontation to reveal the full details is greatly to the credit of this series.

Yes there is a full range of decapitation and gore but many questions remain even up to and including the beautifully judged closing frames.

Lucy is a Diclonius, a genetic mutant that has horns and four invisible arms known as vectors. While escaping from a research facility Lucy is shot in the head resulting in the suppression of her personality and a new one emerging, that of Nyu childlike, innocent and totally unaware of the powers she possesses. Washed up on naked on a beach, Nyu is taking in by collage student Kohta and his cousin Yuka but a murderous soldier and a second Diclonius are hunting the missing Lucy. This DVD contains the first four episodes of the series and with violence and nudity from the outset it is definitely not for those of a sensitive disposition but if you look past the gore you will find a compelling story that doesn't flinch from dealing with some dark issues.

The second Elfen Lied DVD contains the next three episodes of this violent but brilliant anime and if anything it takes the program into even darker territory. With some disturbing scenes explaining why Mayu, the young runaway staying Kohta and co, left her family for life on the street Elfen Lied doesn't hesitate in dealing with sensitive issues such as child abuse but at the same time using some quite graphic depictions. This volume also sees some information about the goal of the Diclonius when the son of the man running the research centre that was holding Lucy captures Nyu in an attempt too advance those gaols but he gets more than he bargained for. Elfen Lied can be shocking at times but never in a gratuitous way with a story that is interesting and compelling.

Elfen Lied finishes as it started with lots of blood and tenderness in equal measure. These final three episodes rap up the series, tying up most of the loose ends and sees Kohta finally realising the truth about Lucy and Kurama taking it upon himself to do the right thing. Although the series as a whole does have many scenes that those of a sensitive disposition may find awful, if you look beyond the gore and nudity then you will find an outstandingly well told story. Elfen Lied has been a brilliantly entertain, if dark and disturbing, series and is probably one of the greatest anime series I have watched.

Elfen Lieds third DVD contains episodes eight, nine and ten of this great but bloody show. In this volume we finally get some insight into Lucy's troubled and disturbing youth while at the same time starts to reveal her connections with the young Kohta. The volume also sees Nana, the young Diclonius mutilated by Lucy, trying to come to terms with being seemingly abandoned by her `father' and upon finally finding the truth about Lucy/Nyu she must come to a decision whether to risk her life fighting the murderous mutant or murder the innocent that shares her mind. Elfen Lied continues to be both violent and brilliant in equal measure as the series gears up for the final volume.
