GitS Standalone Complex is a truer companion to the original then the actual second movie Innocents. Anima TV shows & movies don't always co-exist in continuity terms. As many times they take the main themes & ideas reusing them in a new way appropriate to the storytelling medium. So don't get hung up on how all this ties into the movie as it doesn't, just enjoy it as a standalone story. All the main Section 9 movie characters are here, plus a couple of new ones. Other then the Tachikomas, these new characters are mostly in the background not really being developed much beyond their Section 9 function. Both Stand Alone Complex series are absolutely stunning. Amazing art work, great (if rather complex plots), well thought out characters, this series has it all. Because of the complexity of the plot you can't afford to watch it half-heartedly. This however is one of the best anime series out there today and you don't really need to have seen any of the films either. I can't recommend it enough. Suffice to say, this is so good even non anime fans may appreciate it. I shalln't go into detail but the story weaves intricatelly, incorporating all the main characters and little side stories that add to the whole plot. If you buy only one anime this year make it this one. Well the first series really, make this your second one!

this is the third film based off of the ghost in the shell series. set after the second GIG the year is 2034 and a new hacker has emerged known as the puppet master.after a series of suicides the team of section 9 are following leads as to weather they are all connected and when a large group of children mysteriously turn up at a hospital with large chunks of there memories missing the matter is further complicated. as this is the 1st film based from the Tv Series my expectations were high when watching this film. the story itself is wonderful with some moments bringing surprise twists that i really didn't see coming.its gripping and still holds up the excitement and fast paced nature that the TV series had. the music throughout ... Don't ge me wrong on this, but as much as I liked these films I feel as though they were overhyped. No doubt I enjoyed them but just not as much as other anime like Cowboy Bebop or Full Metal Alchemist. I was really looking forward to these with all the great reviews, but ultimately a little dissapointed as they just didn't have much of an impact on me. I feel like I'm being harsh, as I'm slating the films simply because they didn't live up to the hype. But they were still very good. Good plot, involving characters and great animation. But as good as all this was it just wasn't as good as I was led to believe.

`Ghost in the Shell' and `Akira' are often hailed as something of a turning point for Japanese Animated film - it's grown up, articulate, deep. When you watch this DVD, if it's the first time you've seen the film then much of what you see feels familiar. And that's not surprising considering this has embedded itself deep into film culture - take the opening credits for example and you'll see the direct influence on American thought-provoker - the Matrix. This film presents concepts which take some thinking about to fully understand, definitely a film to be watched twice. This edited summary of the Series 1 boxset is inferior in every way and especially in the soundtrack department. The all new english soundtrack with totally different voice actors just sounds WRONG. For a few pounds more you get 4 times more content and much better voice acting.
