I've read a lot of reviews about how The Wire is difficult viewing. Is it? It's certainly viewing that demands your concentration. You can't turn it on while you're doing something else because you have to watch what's happening, but I think if you've seen Homicide: Life on the Street you will have an idea of the politics and philosophy behind the show. And well you might, because the show's creator David Simon wrote the novel that Homicide is based on, as well as a few episodes of the show, and the Wire is based in Baltimore, albeit focussing more on drugs than on homicides. I had never seen the original Battlestar Galactica and watched this mini series because it was cheap and I saw it had reasonable reviews. BSG is now my favorite TV show. The characters are complex and believable, the story is dark yet superbly told and the show combines stellar acting with some fantastic action sequences. As a whole the series manages to be compelling in many ways. The music and CGI are top notch and the wonderful cast add depth to every issue that gets raised and many are. This is no black and white story as it hinted at in the mini series and it is astounding how deep it all gets while never losing sight of the struggles of the amazingly well defined and diverse characters. Having been unimpressed with first series of The Wire, I only started watching this, the second series, due to the endless critical praise that I kept seeing every time I picked up a newspaper. And I'm glad I did. The second series of The Wire is a huge improvement on the first. The story is deliberately slow to get into its stride but nevertheless is compelling from the opening credits to the final fade. This is a high quality Police drama which shows the good and the bad in everyone; the criminals, the stevedores and the Police all have very human qualities, both strengths and weaknesses, and the divide between crime and order is a realistically hazy one. I studied this historical period in depth and most evidence suggests, (and it is widely accepted), that Henry VIII was in fact a handsome young man in his earlier years. He was tall and solid, a bit unlike the typical stature of the time, one look at his suit of armour can tell us that. They image we usually see of Henry as a tall, large, bearded man was in his later years. Certainly around the time of his first marriage to Catherine, he was an athletic young man. Even after the end of his marriage to Jane Seymour, after her death, he was widely considered to be Europe's ultimate bachelor in a sense! Take a close look at the cover of the season three dvd and you will notice something: Avon and Stringer, together in the same car, but looking in different directions. That tells you all you need to know about these two 'brothers' in season three of The Wire. Whilst Stringer is greasing palms to make the most of the properties they control Avon is glad to be back in the game, keeping control of the corners, and regaining his place on the street. Season three brings us back to the problem of drugs in Baltimore and one man's plan to combat the problem. Major Colvin jokes at one stage that to meet the crime reduction targets he has been set he is going to legalise drugs. But his throwaway comment isn't too far from the truth. I loved this film. I had heard of it before, but never bothered to watch it as didn't think it would be my thing. One day, I was bored and decided to watch it. From start to finish I was captivated by this film. And when it ended, I was sad. Really sad. What I loved most is how realistic it made it, you could almost feel the chemistry between the two and although I always wanted her to end up with Noah, you kind of like understand why it doesn't fit. But then it does. It shows how enduring love can be over all other forces, and really inspires people to show more love to their loved ones. In all, it is the kind of love everyone dreams about. I loved this film, great pressie for anyone and a great watch if you want that sort of thing.

Took a while to heat up - my interest grew and the excitement rolled - then a big dissapointment for an ending (perhaps that was the point) but these types of endings may make for good reading - but not very interesting for a film.

Quite simply this is brilliant. Producing the book as a TV series gave the director the opportunity to indulge in Waugh's lush and vivid text and whole sections of the book are quoted verbatim. And of course, in hindsight, the casting was inspired, with Jeremy Irons as Rider and Anthony Andrews as the rather beautiful Sebastian Flyte. But don't forget such cameo's as Nikolas Grace as the effete Anthony Blanche - masterful! The film I understand, leaves a lot to be desired, so better to buy this AND read the book. You will regret buying neither.

I watched this with my girlfriend and she (like a lot of women I hear) was in floods of tears. Call me a "typical bloke" if you will, but I was not emotionally drawn into it. I didn't see any chemistry between Swank and Butlers characters so never really bought their relationship. I thought Swanks character had better chemistry with that of Connick Jrs. Anyhow, it's an ok film with some funny moments - had the casting been a bit better I too may have had a tear in my eye
