I bought this film on the basis of it being from the same team behind tony jaa's Ong Bak and Warrior King, and what a dissapointment! Lets face it none of us buy martial arts flicks for the gripping story so we all suspend our disbelief there and let the action make up for it but this isn't enough! The fights are well choreographed but the stunt men do most of the work for what is a highly skilled, very athletic & flexible, but seriously underpowered female lead. Changing the main charecter from a male to a female doesn't give the film "a refreshing twist" as one review says it just further points towards this film having nothing new to offer which I was really hoping it would. Making her some sort of autistic, handicapped child in need ... Read More:

*WARNING- SEMI SPOILERS AHEAD*

This is basically about one of the most dysfunctional families EVER! Set in the good ol Tang Dynasty days when it was hip to be Emperor and you had about a gazillion flower arrangers at your beck and call, the plot mainly revolves around the disintegration of the royal family due to their own back stabber-y hi-jinks. Apparently it's not so hip to be an adulterating Empress, even if you do look very pretty all resplendent in your opulent gowns. It's amazing she can move in that stuff!

The entire movie's pretty opulent actually. It's like watching that panoramic bowing scene from 'The Last Emperor' crossed with an Olympic opening ceremony. There's more plotting and scheming than actual fighting, ... Read More:

I have a problem with these 'dancing on air' martial arts films, a-la Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: they look daft. Once you've seen one guy on a wire you've seen them all. Once you've seen a guy stamping his feet forty feet up a bamboo tree you say `Oh, look, a bird'. The only place where these effects have ever seemed anything other than laughable is in The Matrix: because it isn't a real world environment. There you can make allowances. Hero has lots of stylish fighting, but if you can't take it seriously, what's the point? An exercise in futility.
Hero is additionally befuddled by the message it attempts to impart: totalitarian societies are okay because although they are born in bloodshed they lead to a united, peaceful society. Oh ... Read More:

This is actually my favourite Bruce Lee film.Bruce goes to help out gorgeous Nora Miao in Italy,as she's being threatened by mobsters, who want her restaurant. At first, she isn't pleased when she meets him, thinking he'll be of no help whatsoever. His fight skills soon prove her very wrong. The highlight of the film is the final battle between Bruce and Chuck Norris. Both men had great fun working out the duel, and I think its timeless! Personally,a great martial arts action film!

This, Bruce Lee's final feature film before his untimely death, is an extravaganze of martial arts, containing some of the most visually impressive and electrifying fight scenes in the martial arts genre. It was also the first 'Hollywood' film to really bring the martial arts genre and an oriental landscape into the mainstream.

The plot is weak, but this doesn't matter, as Lee's perfromance is strong, his acting charismatic and fascinating. Within the martial arts genre, he has his own very unique and distinctive style, comprising a vast array of weird noises and manic facial expressions.

On a mission to avenge his enemy 'Han' for the deaths of his Mother and Sister, Lee systematically fights a veritable army of fighters in a special ... Read More:

It is sad. Those beautiful landscapes are there, of course, the plot is fair enough, but this movie shows clearly that ain't enough to entertain you.

It is like a tv series production with a boost up for big screen purpose. Still not refined! The walls of the palace, the makeup, the expressions in those faces are so fake that they just don't let you get into the story, which scatters away all the magic of a rather good marketing idea.

My best advice, keep it tight with Hero and Tiger-Dragon, let this movie be forgotten.

Some of the fighting is great. The fights against westerners are the best, other action sequences rely too heavily on clumsy computer effects.
There is a lack of story which is a shame considering the wealth of material on Huo Yuanjia. (The real life martial artist on whom the film is based)
The notion that it is propaganda is absurd, it is one sided but the west really did treat China badly at the time of the opium trade. Also the mutual respect between the Japanese and Chinese martial artists goes against a trend of frosty relations between the two countries. the film fails to live up to such an interesting premise
