Its not surprising that Madam Butterfly has remained to this day one of the most popular operas in the Operatic Repertoire. For the music and the story is timeless. It is very emotive, full of love and tenderness, and also very tragic. This version succeeds admirably in more ways than one. Rather than being stagebound, it is filmed on location (in Tunisia of all places!) and does manage to convey to the viewer the feeling of being in Japan with its wonderful sets, and location shots of the sea and the surrounding landscape to give this production that cinematic feel which works wonderfully well.

The singing by both tenor and soprano in the lead roles is a delight. Mind you, I have been spoiled by the wonderful Pavarotti/Freni version ... Read More:

This film of Verdi's Otello has an awful lot going for it. Ably led by the masterful conducting of Lorin Maazel, the performance enshrines marvellous portrayals of Otello and Desdemona by Domingo and Ricciarelli who deliver performances which both vocally and on the screen often touch greatness. With the typically sumptuous sets of Zefferelli, the film is often quite memorable (for example, at the unforgettable close of the first act).

Yet, as previous reviewers have pointed out, it is indeed a pity that the director chose to cut the Willow Song. That said, with a running time of 1hr 58Mins, Zefferelli wields the axe on Verdi's score with disconcerting ease, with the consequence that the poetic beauty of Boito's libretto and the dramatic ... Recently I purchased the latest Katherine DVD Katherine In The Park, and was absolutely delighted with it. This concert, filmed at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod on 9 July 2006 a year earlier, clearly shows Katherine as a rising star who was fast making a name as one of the most popular singers of today. It is a delightful concert containing many of Katherines most popular songs:

L'Amore Sei Tu (I Will Always Love You)
O Sole Mio
Be My Love (her tribute to the great Mario Lanza)
Somewhere Over The Rainbow
Time To Say Goodbye

just to name a few. And to make it even better, the various arias and musical extracts from Bizet's Carmen with Katherine wearing a Spanish Costume (she looks absolutely superb ... Read More:

This 1990 World Cup concert, which launched the Three Tenors phenomenon, has a beautiful open air setting at the Caracalla Baths in Rome. This means however, a loss of acoustics. Orchestral sounds that would be enriched by a little reverberation literally drift away on the evening breeze. But the singing is excellent. They sing 4 solos each, then - after a sinfonia, or orchestral interlude - 3 more as a trio; 16 tracks in all. All three singers are perfectly at ease in the Romance languages, but struggle with German and English, sometimes quite badly. In the worst example, 'Maria' from West Side Story, Pavarotti bellows, "Say it soft and it's almost like praying". Well, we'll have to take his word for it.

Despite these imperfections, the DVD remains ... Read More:

I bought this DVD with such great expectations. Peter and the Wolf with a new audio recording, brand new animation with Hardman style stop motion and all in PCM, DTS or Dolby. What could be better? Well, the piece, as far as I can remember, was narrated. In fact Prokofiev himself wrote the narrative. So having the story without a narrator, is precicely the same as having a piano cencerto being presented with no piano and letting the orchestra play the roles of piano and orchestra. I know that the orchestra musically plays the roles of the various characters but this should be in addition to the narrative - not instead of. I am at a loss as to why this should be so in this otherwise fantastic production. The music is played brilliantly by the Philharmonia and the animation is ... Read More:

This is the opera that shot Georgiu to stardom. It's easy to see why, with her combination of acting, looks and singing. Violetta is a very difficult role, it places very different demands on the singer in each act. Georgiu isn't quite ideal for act 1, but after that she's really in her element. You can practically see the paternal pride in Solti's face as he watches his young protegee bloom. Surely the definitive Traviata.

This is one of the best versions of Mozart's masterpiece presently available in DVD. Its greatest attraction is obviously the presence of Renée Fleming and Bryn Terfel. Ms Fleming's interpretation of Donna Anna is truly exceptional: the candor and purity of her voice make a perfect expression of the pain and suffering of that noble woman who's father has been killed by the man who tried to rape her. Bryn Terfel is undoubtely a great singer, but he is not a credible Don Giovanni. His voice lacks that touch of evil that makes of the Don the seductor that everybody admires and fears at the same time, specially when he seduces Zerlina and sings below Donna Elvira's balcony. Mr. Terfel's physical appearance is the other factor that prevents us from believing that he can make harm every ... Read More:
