DVD : The Skull [1965] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
Yes "The Skull" is on dvd, after a long, long expectation.
All the bad guys, selling here and there, a dreadful and also nasty copy
full screen, 4/3, Pan & Scan, with only a third ? (more or less) image still visible, made from a vhs out of ages, can throw the object through the window pane.

The Legend Films dvd is enhanced for the 16/9, it' s not even written on the back cover, and it' s effectively for the first time, a splendid 2.35
image, in the full respect of the original Techniscope.

Doesn' t matter really if the movie is this, or that, or short, or long,
and the wire when the skull moves, (I never saw the wire as far as I' m
concerned), we do not care.
The Skull is and ... Read More:

Students of the horror film know that it really hit its stride with Nosferatu, Murnau's version of the Dracula story. With Max Schrek (was he or wasn't he??) playing the lead role to perfection, and some astounding use of light and shade, this film set the standard for years to come.

Murnau really got inside the vampire legend, and drew on many sources, although primarliy of course he used Dracula, which cause many problems after the film was released.

I have had a double disc version by Eureka for some time, and wondered if the new version was necessary, but after reading some of the reviews here I took the plunge, and very am glad that I did. The film is presented in only a single version this time, rather than the option ... Read More:

I love how Van Helsing carried on from the original although it would have been nice to see Christopher Lee. This is my favorite Peter Cushing film. I live in America and originally I bought the R1 DVD included in "The Hammer Horror Series" boxset from universal but I had nasty results with the disks, Brides of Dracula being part of it so I bought a Multi Region DVD Player and bought this DVD and now am able to view one of my favorite Hammer/Peter Cushing films.

Firstly let me start with the Tod Browning/Bela Lugosi English language version (ELV). It's a landmark film being the first conventional version of Dracula, the first major film of the post-Chaney Hollywood horror era, the film that unleashed Bela Lugosi on an unsuspecting world, and the film that established just about every convention of vampire films for decades to come. Compared with Nosferatu, this was a massively influential film up to and including the Hammer era. All of which is a bit strange, because it's not a very good film. Once the action leaves Transylvania and transfers to London (and it's newly acquired suburb of Whitby), the stagey, pompous dialogue and the glacial pace make for quite a boring film. The torpor isn't even relieved by it's being ... Read More:

Contrary to the otherwise excellent review by Jeremy - only Black Sunday and Knives of the Avenger have english soundtracks... the cases do list the languages for the movies as 'English and Italian' but I think the english part only applies to the Alan Jones introductions. Still an excellent set - well worth purchasing if you have not seen any Bava movies before.

i dont care if this is a b movie or not, it genuinlly terrified me!!i couldnt get to sleep for ages after!!the acting may not be up to scratch (barbara is incrediably irritating sitting and not saying a work, you feel like smacking her)but the story, though old, always freaks me out and i think it will freak you out too!!!

DVD : The Ed Wood Collection: A Salute to Incompetence
Yes Ed Wood was the worst ever film maker.

Yes the walls move, Yes the plots are best described as lacking, But...

These films are ever so entertaining, you'll find yourself giggling at the serious bits, grimacing slightly at the acting. Take these films with a pinch of humour, and you'll enjoy this gem of a DVD set.

Treat them as a serious piece of film making, and you'll miss the point

Many films since have tried to make hay out of a similar concept, just how can a woman go missing from a moving train without anyone seemingly having seen her, but none have ever made for a movie quite as good as this genuine classic from 1938.

Of course the audience knows that Miss Foy, a delightful turn from Dame May Whitty, was on the train and we soon learn the reasons why the other passengers don't believe, or won't back up, Iris Henderson (another great turn from Margaret Lockwood) when she insists that the old woman has, well, vanished. Two bumbling Englishmen don't want to miss the test cricket, a lawyer doesn't get involved because he's in the middle of an illicit romantic affair.

When it was remade in 1979, badly, the action almost immediately ... Read More:

Two men are sitting on a cement bench by the garden wall. One casually says there are evil spirits all around. As a woman in white glides by the second man Francis (Friedrich Fehér) says that is my fiancée Jane (Lil Dagover) and let me tell you what happened to us.

As his story begins we are subjected to a weird world of light and twisted shadows. A string Dr. (Caligari played by Werner Krauss) brings a somnambulist (sleeping man played by Conrad Veidt) to a local fair. The somnambulist knows all things and can predict the future; he prophesizes correctly Allan's (friend of Francis and rival for Jane's hand) murder and pilfers Jane from her bed chamber. But how can this be; as Francis has been keeping an eye on the doc and the snoozer all night and they have not moved? ... Read More:
