This has got to be one of the worst Doctor Who stories I have watched for some time and had me questioning not just the story itself but why I am collecting Doctor Who at all. There is probably about 35 minutes of story stretched out into 4 x 25 minute episodes. I was waiting for it to end by the end of the second episode but we just had endless story progressions revolving around things like the characters moving back and forth between the sisterhood and the castle. The only thing worth watching here is Elisabeth Sladen.

Generally this adventure has much to recommend it and does, indeed provide an interesting record of the time in which it was made. I came away glad to have watched it but not clear I would watch it again any time soon. Many things grated with me, in no particular order: * WOTAN uses the name Doctor Who explicitly several times which I found grating * The change of companions is abrupt and the story ends just as the new companions enter the TARDIS meaning you miss the trademark 'bigger on the inside' line * The TARDIS prop is looking very tatty (though the last time I saw the Tennant TARDIS it had a hole in!) * The last episode has a huge battle scene with War Machines vs. soldiers ... Really enjoyable; Classic 70s campy fun-Baker on top form, great debut from Lalla Ward. If you want a serious plot/acting extravoganza-swerve, if you want a bit of a giggle and light hearted fun-then it's a must have. Noone beats the Baker!

I gave this to my husband as a birthday gift and he is over the moon with it! The quality of the collection is fantastic and to this day Thunderbirds is still a classic with young and old. A must buy for any die hard fan!

This is a collecton of three Dr Who stories, all linked by the presence of the Silurians and/or Sea Devils. The Silurians is an early Jon Pertwee tale which sees the Doctor (working for UNIT) investigating power failures at an underground research centre. Before long he has come across a race of intelligent reptile-people who once inhabited the Earth and have been revived from their age-old suspended animation. This is an example of Dr Who at its best - thought-provoking, intelligent, well-written, and with some serious issues to raise. In The Sea Devils, also with Jon Pertwee, the Doctor visits his old adversary the Master who is currently beng held in a high-security jail. With its plot involving the Doctor returning to Gallifrey to claim the position of presidency, this could have been an intriguing look into Time Lord society - a follow-up to The Deadly Assassin, showing Gallifrey now going downhill. Unfortunately it doesn't work out like that. The beginning of the story shows promise, the Doctor coming across as quite sinister, and the scenes set outside the Time Lord city show a side of Gallifrey never before seen. But overall it just descends into tackyness. The alien invaders (Vardans) start off as transparent pieces of tin-foil before they transform into cliched 'troopers' who look as though they've been lifted from a '50s sci-fi action serial. This slow, boring at times, movie is a classic. It gets played on my dvd player during bouts of insomnia or drunkeness or when i smokeweed. It has a Terrence Malick feel to it in my opinion; it is a visual tone poem much like Malick movies eg Days of Heaven where there is little dialogue. 2001: A Space Odyssey has barely 40 minutes of dialogue in a 145-minute film. Regarding the plot, we move across centuries, from the birth of man with apes fighting it out to sociopathic Computer Hal taking a crew to Jupiter in a quest to understand a mysterious black monolith that may hold the key to God. Really "The Five Doctors" should be dreadful; Who, at the time it was filmed, was in a slump and, frankly,the series' scriptwriters were struggling to come up with a script that would do one Doctor justice. Watch "Timeflight" or "Arc of Infinity" to see how poor the series could be. But this show really hits the spot: a silly but action filled plot penned by Terrance Dicks makes sure nostaglia is evoked by its clumsy but addictive plot hooks.Despite Tom Baker's refusal to take part and the fact Hartnell had died this feels a worthy celebration even though it is really only 3 and bit Doctors. Yet another Tom Baker classic! (seriously, how many weren't?!!) Strong horror element to this with a creepy atmosphere, and the planet itself is a TRIUMPH of set design; exotic and nightmarish, almost alive in itself! The main monster, a creature made of anti matter is effective, and well rendered visually for the time (NOT a man in a rubber suit here!). Definiteley inspired by the Id monster from the SciFi classic, Forbidden Planet. The acting is good with an interesting mix of characters, in the crew stationed on the planet. There are shades of Aliens/The Thing as the 'Evil' of the story picks the men off one by one. One of my favs from long ago and well presented on DVD with some great features, especially re the set design.

I recall seeing these two films many years ago during their initial release, and being a Doctor Who fan, welcomed them in this 2 disc box set. They are rather dated now, with cheap looking sets, exaggerated colour, and camp acting. But they are also a fond look back at the early years of Doctor Who, which by the time these films had been released the series had been broadcast by BBC Television since November 1963. The first story based on the original transmission which was shown between December 1963 and February 1964 remains to this day one of the all time classic Doctor Who. The film version however, seems a rather rushed affair covering the basic storyline when the Doctor lands on the planet Skaro and finds an abandoned city.
