I got this workout DVD on a recommendation from a friend. I can see how you might get results if you stuck to it, but I like my excercise to feel like excercise and this is really just too slow. Also living in a flat, there are some parts which it isn't practical to do for fear of disturbing the neighbours. I can see how it would work for some people, but I think I'll stick to the gym.

Verdi's Aida comes thrillingly to life in this splendid production from the Metropolitan Opera. Aprile Millo is in excellent voice in the title role and sings with great musicality throughout. Indeed this sense of musical values being the most important is reflected in the fine performances of the rest of this all star cast most notably Placido Domingo and Dolora Zajick as Radames and Amneris respectively. The production is old fashioned but attractive and the physical acting is rudimentary but the vocal acting gets prizes all round.

This was a favourite performance for me on video and is now excellently transferred onto DVD (sub titles optional). First rate.

Please ignore "Riggers" review..! It is without a doubt PCM 5.1 you just need to select it in the menu!

I have shown this Blu-ray to everybody that came to my house, if they wanted to or not :-), and they ALL loved it..

What a fantastic line-up.. Especially with Chris Botti and Lang Lang.

It is PCM 5.1 and it is fantastic!

This superb production is a stunning success. The entire cast sings and acts with total authority and conviction. Fleming sings beautifully (even if she does look a bit like she's walked straight out of an American soap opera), my only reservation is over James Morris, whose acting is a bit hammy (he should have made less use of his (very strange) eyebrows). Domingo overwhelms. Levine gives the music all the ferocious power it needs, with a fantastically disciplined Met orchestra. Sets and costumes strike an ideal balance between traditional and modern, sumptuous and understated. One tiny gripe - not every line in the opera is subtitled. There are some serious gaps in the subtitling. Overall verdict though: excellent - the five stars richly ... Read More:

5 long DVDs that will be enjoyed by kids from about 4 to about 10 - although I enjoyed watching them myself immensely. Three of the DVDs feature Dennis, and here there are some small animated classics. Possibly the best is Summer Holiday where Dennis and his family find themselves forced to disguise Gnasher their dog as a baby in order to get a room at a B&B run by a woman {voiced by Prunella Scales) with 'an animal complaint'.

This 1992 recording of Zeferelli's lavish production for La Scala, Milan, is an oddly unsatisfying set. All the vocal performances are sound, although none outstanding - all these monumental roles have been captured by others in better performances.
Pavarotti was at the end of his stage career here, and whilst vocally he still has that distinctive warm tone, physically he is unengaged and unengaging - hardly moving for most of his appearances except to enter or leave the stage (it was around this year that I saw him in Ballo in Maschera at Covent Garden when he had oxygen cylinders secreted around the set for a crafty breather mid-Act).
Daniella Dessi is in good voice but rather passionless; Sam Ramey is quite unconvincing yet vocally ... Read More:

I have to say that Il Trovatore is one of my favourite Verdi Opera's, with a great mix of drama and suspense, twinned with the most unlikely of story lines! There are ample opportunities for the musicians and artists to shine, and some did in this production!
In particular, Dolora Zajick, much the best actor on the stage, gave a passionate and inspired performance as Azucena. She has a wonderfully resilient voice, and carried the role off superbly. I also enjoyed Sherrill Milnes' performance as the "evil" Count Luna. Milnes wouldn't be out of place as the baddy in one of those silent films twiddling his moustach! I found his powerful Baritone extremely convincing.

Pavarotti's voice is as agreeable as ever, but as usual his acting lets the overall ... Read More:
