I'll be honest here: I thought Shaun of the Dead was OKAY. Not amazing, definitely worth 4 stars, but not as stratospherically brilliant as everyone made it out to be (in my opinion!).
With Hot Fuzz, however, the tables turned. I came to this film with average expectations, expecting a decent-ish cop comedy. What I got blew me away.
The film felt bigger, smarter, faster...and funnier. Watching it first time around was good enough, and full of laughs (It's hard to say what kind of comedy style it is. Most would say black comedy, but there's a bit of everything here, especially tongue-in-cheek).

But I think the real beauty of Hot Fuzz is the subtlety and sheer number of references it makes. Whether it's spotting ... Read More:

Recommended for anyone who has enjoyed the recent Beowulf films or In The Name Of The King - this isn't on the scale of Lord Of The Rings but it is a decently budgeted movie with very good production values. It's always good to see the legendary Max Von Sydow in a typically dignified role too!
The FX are excellent, well integrated into the plot with a Dragon that is one of the best that I have seen since 1981's Dragonslayer, certainly as good as Beowulf's and a lot, lot better than Dragonheart's Draco and the BBC's Merlin! The flesh tones are really good, with exceptionally good CG that looks solid & 3D, and the battle in the cave is again very reminiscent of Dragonslayer.
There is also excellent sword combat/fight choreography, ... Read More:

as a fan of the movie in and of itself i suppose i am a bit biased but the visuals of this disc are up there with "appleseed exmachina"which is one of my favourites .

this is a great movie and if you have a ps 3 or a bluray player this is an essential purchase because no hi def collection is finished without it so buy this disc and you will not be disappionted .

I recently purchased an LCD TV and in order to take advantage of its HD capability I splashed out on a Blue-ray player as well as a Sound bar. While I accepted that I would be getting a superior picture I wasnt exactly blown away by the BR disks I bought .
That is until yesterday.
Having ordered this disk over the weekend, I loaded it into the tray and pressed play.
Talk about revelation. The clarity of the picture is out of this world. Add the sound quality. (Note to self, must purchase woofer) and I was very impressed. However special effects do not make a film. To that end this film is amazing. Fast paced, very funny, brilliant acting and what do you have.
A decent film.
Now if only Hollywood could repeat this formula on ... Read More:

I am rather surprised by the negative ratings of this set. It is quite clear that it contains the one disc versions, and if, like me you just want the first four Batman films then this set is a brilliant, very cost effective way of getting them.

All films are presented in Dolby 5.1 surround sound which, particularly on the last two discs, is extremely effective and really adds to the films.

I enjoyed all four films but in different ways and for different reasons. "Batman Forever" and "Batman and Robin" are far more like the sixties TV show, which I don't find a bad thing as they make fun, entertaining viewing. The first two Burton films are darker and probably closer to the original comic (although I must confess I haven't read the ... Read More:

Following the trend of humpety dumpety style openings, the writers manage to putt smallville back together again, with the character back into their original places. Lana returns, Chloe comes back from the dead *coughs* hiding, and Clark...er...falls back to Earth naked in a field. The introduction of Lois does being some much needed comic relief, and adds a new dimention as Cark is not the hero to her.

The main plot of this season is that of gaining three Kryptonian crystals, which grant the sum off al Kryptonian knowledge to it's possesser.

HOWEVER

This season is GREATLY spolied by the addition of a witch (and her two cronies in Spell), this degrades the entire season, as it's very difficult to except, or even take those ... Read More:

This film was exciting when I saw it in 1956 in Holland, and it is just as exciting now. How can one miss with the superb talent of Michael Redgrave, the stirring music of Eric Coates, and a gripping yarn that happens to be true? Much of the fascination of this film stems from its depiction of Barnes Wallis's process of planning and perfecting the bouncing bomb, and persuading Whitehall to go along with his eccentric idea. Equally interesting are the various makeshift devices, such as the range-finding lights and the home-made bombsight.

"The Dam Busters" tells the story of ingenuity and courage during wartime. In the wrong hands, such a topic might be heavy handed, but one of the things that British filmmakers of the 1950s did so well was to deliver their ... Read More:

'The Empire Strikes Back', the second of the "old" Star Wars releases, is likely to be the darker of the collection, yet at the same time, the most accomplished in terms events. Their are many well shot scenes that are so cleverly edited, and the early fight scene on the snow planet between the rebels and the empire is superbly shot.

It's only my opinion though, but I've always felt the ending shot of this film is incredibly weak. Not longer after Darth Vader has confessed his relationship with Luke, we're still in alot of tension and the atmosphere is quite mellow, yet in a matter of minutes, all this is turned around so we can have a shot of Luke, Leia, and the droids gazing out of their cruisers window with a big smile on their face, just to make a "happy ending". ... President Ashton(William Hurt)is assassinated at a political summit in Salamanca,Spain.Seasoned Secret Service Agent Thomas Barnes(Dennis Quaid) and his collegues are in a race against time to uncover the perpetrators whose very careful plans include a bribed special forces operative,a compromised bodyguard and several explosive devices.
Rashomon like thriller(the same event from several perspectives)is fast paced, well acted(even if Quaid is starting to look like he is permanently constipated)and pretty exciting. The twists, save one, are all extremely obvious. The "mole" is so obvious that it serves only to reduce the tension rather than ramp it up.
Still a bravura finsh, worthy of the bourne series and a resourceful POTUS makes Vantage Point alot of fun.
