This landmark film is let down on DVD by an unsympathetic transfer from a less than wonderful print which jiggles about during the titles and betrays a lot of grain, scratches, and other flaws. As noted, the non-anamorphic picture doesn't help - you have to "zoom in" to get the picture to fill your screen - although the sound is pretty good and the extras are excellent.

The Blu-Ray release is on 1st December 2008, and we should end up with a much better-looking picture. It deserves no less.

Michael Caine stars as Charlie Croaker, a newly realised prisoner, who sets about putting into motion a plan to steal a fortune, $4,000,000, in gold bars from the Italians. Until certain events come to pass, he is unable to set the plan into motion. He sneaks into the prison, where he interrupts Mr Bridger's nightly toilet break. Once undue reparations have come to pass onto the unfortunate Charlie Croaker, Mr Bridger finds an interest in the scheme. Once he, Croaker, has selected the team, and carried out rudimentary training he transports them to Italy; where they encounter the Italian Mafia. The Mafia, take it upon themselves to re-enact the credible incident that had befallen Croaker's predecessor's, who had planned the Job in Italy, untimely ... Read More:

I was nearly put off buying this film as it seems that some of the reviewers don't think it quite as good as the series. However, I have now bought it and think it is brilliantly made, very funny and a wonderful film to put by for a quiet moment during the Christmas holidays when the TV listings are disappointing or for a rainy Sunday afternoon. My children love it, my parents love it, we love it - so nice to be able to sit down to a film together as a family.

Unlike the series which is set in Britain parts of this film are of the Germans plotting their invasion from the other side of the Channel. The juxtapositioning of the German preparedness and the British unpreparedness is priceless. You will recognise some plots from the earliest ... Read More:

Why has nobody reviewed this series before? Winds of War, and its follow-on series War and Remembrance (unfortunately only available in region 1 coding) is the best war drama, and probably even the best dramatic series I've ever watched.
Superbly acted, brilliantly directed, historically accurate and faithful to the book, you will be riveted from start to the sad and moving ending.
Made for US television, was it ever shown on TV in this country? It's surprising if not as it is very pro-British.
Taking several years to film, in the late eighties, there is some loss of continuity between the two series, because some of the actors had to be changed. But it gets better as it goes on.

For some reason this is probably my least favourite season but nevertheless it is still absolutely fantastic. There are some epic moments and episodes here that i would consider my absolute favourites but something just relegates it below the others, i don't know what it is, maybe the bad guy isn't up scratch, either way saying this is my least favourite is hardly an insult.

Top stuff and Jacks rawest ever moment is in this series.

Network haven't played around with this series, it's exactly as I remember it. Just as watchable, just as beautiful... just as human.
That shot of the water at dusk, the waves lapping, the heat. It's pure nostalgia, pure magic.
I can't recommend this highly enough!

...and the poor film and sound quality? Well, it's like listening to 30s blues... the scratches and blips are absolutely essential.

One of the best movies ever made, this has everything. The action is crisp, the situation powerful and the whole film delivers right across the board. If you haven't seen this, buy it immediately. You fool.

Having read the original book - elements from which were almost certainly 'borrowed' for 'King Arthur' - I was disappointed to have missed what seemed to be a ridicously short run at the cinema. Having now seen the film on DVD, I can see why that run was so short. It's truly awful. Ben Kingsley is hams it up so badly you'd think he was in panto and Colin Firth is so wooden if the film had been any longer he'd have needed a coat of Ronseal. If you want to spend your money then buy the book instead. This was an opportunity missed to make a really entertaining film and is a HUGE disappointment.

yes this is not the most AMAZING SST film that they have made, the first one is totally dominant over MANY films in my eyes and i NEVER get bored of it. I am a SST fanatic, iv seen the tv series (Starship Troopers: Roughnecks) and thought that was just as good as the first film, iv read the book and i have seen the 2nd of the 3 SST films... yes the second as most people agree, was not starship troopers, it lacked the quality, however, it was still a reasonable film but not classed as a SST in my eyes. Now the third film... i saw the trailer and thought to myself "this is going to be RUBBISH!" well, it is better than it looked, i enjoyed the film (minus the TERRIBLE acting and the low budget, which they should have waited upon and not rushed it) and then another thing i disliked was the ...
