Humphrey Bogart is on top form in this John Huston-directed classic film from 1941.

The age of the film is not really a factor with this new Special Edition, as the restored picture and sound are faultless and catapult the action onto the screen for maximum enjoyment.

The plot centres on the quest to obtain an elusive statuette (as named in the title of the film), but the item is really a 'MacGuffin' since the story is played-out to involve all the matters associated with getting it, rather than the Maltese Falcon itself being significant.

This allows the detective Sam Spade character played by Bogart to dominate the film, and the quality of his performance clearly demonstrates why he subsequently rose ... Read More:

One of my favourite films. This has incredible one liners, great slapstick, Bill Murray at his best and a really strange but completely great premise behind the whole thing.

Superb.

This film is APPALLING. I have to admit i am writing a review but i could not stomach watching the film right to the very end (i watched at least 3\4 of it), i gave it a chance but in the end i had to turn it off. It made me want to vomit. I second the oppinion by some commentators on here that if you are interested in watching a film on this topic watch THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE BARLEY, well cast, amazingly directed, beautifully shot, thoughtfull, researched, provoking, intelligent and touching - all the things this film was NOT!!! There really isn't alot more to comment on the horribly Hollywoodised cheesy badly acted Michael Collins except its embarrasingly embarrasingly bad... just don't bother.

I thought it's potrayal of the slums in Rio was excellent. You could really feel the pain and suffering through each character, from the begining to the end, false dawns and the main character somehow coming through it all to realise his dream. Some good perfomances in there. A really good watch.

"It puts the lotion on it's skin or else it gets the hose again".

Words that have passed the lips of movie buffs for the past seventeen years with such ferver.

Clarice Starling is a student of the FBI academy in Quantico; bright, sharp, and eager to succeed. Her idol, Jack Crawford, asks her to interview a famous serial killer known as "Hannibal the Cannibal" Lektor in the hopes of learning some information leading to finding a serial killer known as "Buffalo Bill" who likes to kidnap women, murder them, then skin them.

Hannibal Lektor promises Clarice the chance to succeed at her task by providing her with the information she needs to capture the killer, but only in exchange for a chance to delve into her psyche.

Wonderful performances from ... Read More:

After quite a few disappointing movie rentals, and being none too impressed by the more recent monster/action films to grace our screens, I decided to try out a classic.

My interest was initially perked up by the fact Kiefer Sutherland was in it. Being a bit of a fan, and liking the premise of the film, I decided to buy the double boxset of the film (it works out cheaper - even if the 2nd one is a bit naff in comparison) and I must say it's one of the best films I have seen in ages!

The story goes thus. Michael and Sam move with their mum to Santa Carla, California, after what seems like a slightly messy divorce. They settle in quickly, Sam befriending two (if not slightly odd) comic book store teens, and Michael befriending agang of bikers...or are they?

Pretty soon, Michaels ... Read More:

Ignore those who say that this doesn't do justice to the books - it's different, yes, but in a good way. What's the point in sitting down to watch something that's EXACTLY like the book, or complaining because it doesn't EXACTLY match what you thought it should look like? The BBC made an amazing job of what was almost impossible to film, and the cast is just perfect. Jonathan Rhys Meyers plays Steerpike with more than a touch of genius, and the chemistry between him and Fuchsia is spot-on... Everything about this is awe-inspiring; the sets, the scripts, the acting. Admittedly, Warren Mitchell's portrayal of Barquentine is more comical and capricious than the fearsome and powerful character in the book, but it works. Likewise, Irma Prunesquallor seems more ridiculous on the screen than she does on the page, but a bit of ... Read More:

As can be seen by most other reviewers I disagree with the high ratings of this film (which incidentally prompted me to buy it).

This is a very basic story of revenge and low lifes and while the depiction of low life drug dealers is quite good and believable - I am a police officer myself - the main story itself is just plain uninteresting. The reasons for this murderous rampage are at first very unclear (and unsatisfactory) in arty b/w flashbacks and even as the story draws to a close it is rather unfulfilling.

Not one character sparked special interest for me nor did I find the murders impressive. Just a series of dull executions. There is no suspence or thrills to be found.

I could easily have missed the movie altogether and my life would be no worse for it. Instead I have a copy of the ... Read More:
