I'll never understand why this film walked away with all the awards it got and was so hyped. PULP FICTION does not live up to any such expectations. Supposedly cool it is just senseless banter most of the time, not really funny but utterly ridiculous, with sudden explosions of violence. If you're looking for a black comedy try THURSDAY - a supposed copy of the Tarantino-style, but far better than anything he made.

Waking The Dead - Series 4 [2001]

Contemporary television drama at its best, although I have not seen all the seasons I feel certain this must be the best, if they come any better than this, WOW.

There is a wonderful atmosphere maintained throughout the season, every complex plot is a well acted and a stunning success, even if there are occasional unlikely coincidences, etc

Detective Superintendent Peter Boyd (Trevor Eve) and psychologist and profiler Grace Foley (Sue Johnson) both well into middle age lead the very much younger team of DI Jordan (Wil Johnson), DS Mel Silver (Claire Goose) and pathologist /forensic scientist Frankie Wharton (Holly Aird).
What makes it stand out against other series (i.e. ... Read More:

I can scarcely believe that anyone took this movie seriously, principally because of Nicolas Cage's (par-for-the-course) appalling acting.. It is quite pitiful to watch him attempt to present a noble mien as the angelic character, cocking his head on one side; standing on a skyscraper in his long slouch coat, looking with compassion at the teeming millions below; speaking... very... slowly... to indicate that he is troubled by the torment of emotions which we poor humans have to endure. Really he is HYSTERICAL.
What is even worse is his transformation into a 'human' - soulful, puppy-eyed looks at Meg Ryan accompanied by speech of a normal speed, just in case we missed the finer points of his change in characterisation. This movie is a total hoot 'n' ... Read More:

So the series that had it all has ended. For all of you that missed this when run on Channel 4 and its offshoots over the past eight years or so snap this up. HBO have delivered the best TV drama bar none over the past decade (sorry beeb but there is more to quality drama than crinolines and bonnets).
The magnificent Band of Brothers, the glossy, sumptuous Rome, the peerless The Wire and the quirky Deadwood and Carnivale. This demonstates that the creative talent is out there but constrained by the pressure of Nielsen ratings and the blandness of network TV strictures in the US of A.

The punchy scripts, the humour and the courageous character arcs of Davids Chase's writing were a breath of fresh air on first viewing. The violence that is clearly ... Read More:

Highly underrated movie that should have won oscars for everything from the direction to the screenplay to the cinematography, to the camera work, to the editing to the haunting and dramatic music score. This film has it all and it all comes off superbly well even if it is a little predictable in places.

This is also Gene Hackman at his stupendous best. A stunning performance that is arguably one of the best of all time--to be honest I like him here even more than I do Brando in the Godfather. He steals every single scene and he knows it, putting a riveting performance in its own right by Willem Defoe almost but not quite in the shade. Hackman's secret could well be that he never gives the impression that he's acting, but that this is for real. A huge ... Read More:

This film looks very good, the set, cinematography and initially the atmosphere, but the more i watched it the more i was left bemused as to why a posh english couple were fighting for the Soviet Union, allot of the accents are bad in this film but at least they're making some effort.
The film starts to get quite interesting when the German sniper comes on the scene but then the love story starts to develop and thats the point when you want to switch it off.
This film is mildly entertaining ( if you can cope with the dodgy accents ), but i think Jude Law is a terrible actor and if you, like me can't stand the guy then stay well away.

For many Bond fans, the return of Sean Connery in this "unofficial" Bond entry, was an exciting opportunity to experience the Connery magic and charisma before the earlier pre-Roger Moore years. Released in 1983, the film competed head-to-head against Moore's entry, "Octopussy" which, to some critics of note, one of the better Roger Moore efforts. Obviously, this production had a more engaging cast, an entertaining story, and some good actors: Maude Adams and Lois Jourdan as Bond's nemesis than "Never Say Never Again."

While it's good to have Connery back, looking actually fitter than he did in "Diamond Are Forever" in 1971, and wearing a faultless toupee, the film manages to fall short on a number of levels. Viewers should note, it is a different film; for ... Read More:

SAW is an ingenious take on the slasher movie franchise. Mixing satisfying puzzle elements with touches of Grand Guignol and inventive camera techniques this movie keeps the viewer entertained from start to finish. And the ending, although highly unlikely given the circumstances, is quite rewarding. Preposterous but great fun.

The first couple of episodes are thinner than expected and I wondered what I'd got myself into but patience is rewarded as the series develops: the plots improve dramatically and the actors settle in to their roles. Not as good as the HBO/Baltimore shows but it may evolve some more.
