AMERICAN PSYCHO is not your typical serial killer movie. If you are looking for a shlasher film full of blood, gore and guts, you'll be ultimately disappointed. If you are looking for a witty, satirical thriller, with Hollywood's currently most promising actor, this one'll be right up your alley. No one could have portrayed Bret Easton Ellis' serial killer better than Bale. No one could have directed this film better than Mary Harron. Make all Fridays and Maniacs look like crap.

Entertaining, but also contrived and overdone. Cary Grant's manic zeal is ultimately tiresome. NB Screwball comedies of the 40s are an acquired taste.

Strongman and enforcer Jack Carter (Michael Caine) returns to his native North East (of England) to investigate the suspicious death of his brother. Here he encounter a world of sleaze, booze, violence, casual sex and people in search of easy money.

Hard to call it a classic early British gangster film given that they were so few around, but more a cracking thriller that makes full use of its cast, plot and (unusual) Newcastle Upon Tyne location.

Writer-Director Mike Hodges wanted violence with reality and he delivers it with real punch. Unlike most thrillers bystanders are not immune from the action and at various stages harsh punishment is handed out for minor crimes by anti-hero Caine.

Caine underplays his ... Read More:

A great film but looking its age with lots of 70's style over-the-top phychedelic effects. It's a good idea to read the book before watching the film though, it's very long on fancy effects but remarkably short on explanation. I've watched it many times and can honestly say that if I hadn't read the book first, I'd have little idea what on earth was going on.

Rebecca, based on the novel written by Daphne Du Maurier, has been adapted many times, and here we are referring to the version directed by Jim O' Brien, starring Charles Dance and Emilia Fox. For those of you who saw the version with Lawrence Olivier, this one is a real improvment, as we may actually emphatize with Dance's character. Shot in Cornwall, the movie is a mixed blend of astonishing beauty and dreadful memories that seem to have taken the best of Maxim De Winter. Just recovering (in a tentative manner, to tell the truth) from the recent passing of his first wife, De Winter set out to Monte Carlo, in an attempt to washed away his previous life with the first Mrs De Winter. There, he met the soon-to-be second Mrs de Winter, played by Emilia Fox who ... Read More:

The book this film was adapted from is excellent. It's taut, philosophical, thrilling, intelligent and manages to be sexy in a slightly fustymusty high-brow sort of way.

Elijah Wood (of The Lord of the Rings fame) plays Martin, an American mathematical genius who is in Oxford doing his thesis. John Hurt (why was he in this?!) plays Arthur Seldom, his thesis professor. Guillermo Martinez (the author) is a mathematician, and his passion for numbers and puzzles is glaringly obvious... that part has transitioned well, and there's nowt wrong whatsoever with discussing the philosophy of maths. I just don't know if it's a medium suitable for the big screen. You see, there is *lots* of philosophising about, for example, the (possibly) absolute truth of maths... in fact, ... Read More:

I don't think this is a technically brilliant film. I don't think it deserved the best picture Oscar ahead of either The Graduate or Bonnie and Clyde. (Nor did anyone else at the time. Personally I think the latter film is the best product of the three, although The Graduate is easily my favourite.) I think there must have been a bit of politics being played here by the Academy, in showcasing a film with just the right message for its time. It has good things in it, the best being Rod Steiger in an 'I'll show you what real acting is' kind of mood. Really, this was set up to be Poitier's film, but for me he doesn't get a look in, Mr. Steiger is in such hot form: One of the all time great movie performances, this. Pretty good photography, very good dialogue, but the plot is weak and ... Read More:

My header says it all, I knew it was going to be good, I mean how could it not be? Tom hanks, Paul Newman.....Jude Law? Without giving too much away, Hanks plays a hit man for the mob lead by Newman, whom is also a father figure to Hanks, favouring him over his own son played by Daniel Craig...

The plot thickens when things turn sour due to the immature and irresponsible actions of Craig which have catastrophic consequences for all involved, especially when the terrifyingly deadly skills of Hanks comes to the fore.

The film however is not all violence, and in fact is truly a heart warming stroy of father and son bonding between Hanks and his son, finding themselves thrust into a situation which neither want, they decide to take the mob head on whilst at the same time constantly ... Read More:

the acting is solid and the action well staged but the rapid fire visuals soon grate and its 30 minets too long
