The inventiveness is gone in this film, and while there's plenty of gore it doesn't have the ingenuity that made the first two films so effective. It's just about worth seeing but nothing great.

'21' is a good film looking at a group of college students who engage in a card counting 'scam' in Vegas. Based on true events you can't help but be impressed by the skill involved and very quickly you are drawn in to the idea and how they go about it. The performances are all pretty solid and this film is also well directed. This is one of those films you don't have to think too hard for and can just sit back and enjoy the ride. It's not earth shaking, but nor does it try to be. It's just a good film with an interesting idea and enough twists and turns to keep you engaged for the duration. Worth a look.

I have all the New Tricks volumes and this keeps up the standard of the others. The acting is wonderful and the stories a mixture of light comedy and serious plot. So why oh why did the producers need to put in the backgound music - the single key piano playing, and synthesised violin trying to create pathos? It is just not necessary and in fact spoils the viewing when you become aware of it. Apart from that it is brilliant

As my title suggests I'm in two minds about this film, if you consider the pacing, narrative, special effects and the overall purpose of the film, it isn't very good but I do appreciate its themes and the cinematography and the overall atmosphere that is created. Carter never liked to do what was expected of him, he tended to follow his own intuitions and it worked for the series making them fresh, interesting and utterly compelling, allowing them to run for so long and have such a devoted fan base. I'm one of those fans, I love the series and appreciated where it was left in the last episode; the date was set, the invasion inevitable, the FBI was overrun with alien agents and our two heroes were on the run. I was told how great this film was by a few people prior to watching it. So it was with great anticipation that I fed it into my DVD player and started it up. I was really hoping I would marvel at this film and be spellbound by it. It started well with Daniel Day Lewis trapped in a mine shaft after falling and breaking his leg and I thought 'I'm going to enjoy this'. But then, I just didn't. Well, that's a slight lie, I did like it, just didn't love it. Out of the two films released at the same time to Oscar fanfare I much preferred the Coens No Country For Old Men. It may be that this film was a little slow paced, which isn't a bad thing at all (see my review of The Assasination of Jesse James) but in this setting it just didn't capture my imagination. I used to think that I liked SciFi and action movies. Then I eventually realised, after watching hours of tosh, that in fact I don't like most SciFi and action movies at all. I turns out that I only like good SciFi and action movies. Rest assured this is a good movie. It may not be in the league of the Bourne identity but it is way above the usual rubbish. And what makes this particularly good as a DVD are the extras which give an interesting insight into the world of snipers and Mark Wahlburg himself.

Having enjoyed the first series (mostly) I looked forward to watching the second series. Sadly, although the first 3 episodes weren't too bad, from episode 4 onwards it was all downhill. The characters became predictable and the quality control on the plots disappeared. Sadly I bought the 3rd series with the 2nd. I won't be buying the 4th.
