Time has given this series a "classic" tag, but from the awful theme song through to the grating voices and Japanese-style animation, this series misses the Moomin mark by miles. Of course the stories carry their own value, but the nuances and subtleties of the rather dark and profound books are missing.

The earlier 80's series - with narration and Polish "Puppet/fuzzy-felt" animation (and haunting music) is infinitely preferable to this. The Japanese version is far slicker and easier in a shallow way to enjoy, but it is too far removed from the spirit of the extraordinary books to rate more than 2 stars.

A pity - it's an expensive series and much of the drawing attempts to recapture Tove Jansson's assured line work. ... Read More:

I was hugely looking forward to watching these two so finally got them using the Amazon Rental thingy. People had been going on about how they weren't just for kids and what great films they were. Well, I'm sorry, but I just don't get it. They were both pretty dull. Thin plots, poor songs and musical numbers (apart from the last number in Shrek 2), annoying characters (in a more realistic film someone would have shot the Donkey ten minutes in).

Maybe I'm just an old grouch, but I fell asleep twice during the second one and the first wasn't much better.

The animated series is work of genius. Or genius's. Lovingly crafted, beautifully written and establishes itself quickly as the best depiction of Batman outside the comics.
These are some of the earliest episodes, and arguably some of the weakest. The Last Laugh is a especially bad compared with later Joker episodes and the animated movies. "Nothing to Fear" is one of my favourites and you'll notice that the Begins movie (in regards to the Scarecrow) lifts a lot of material from here. Pretty Poison, and on Leather Wings are also classy episodes which stand up against the repeatng viewing. On the whole a short but sweet disc.
The DVD extras offer a brief but insightful intro. into each episode.

I remember watching this as a youngster on DJ Kat in the 90's and I thought it was absolutely brilliant! The reasons for this are that it had great, movie-like story lines which often had an intelligent theme which people could really relate to, such as persecution, discrimination, time-travel, the role of machines for man's protection, coupled with the whole diverse mutant super power action. But the true greatness of the tv series was the fact that it was NOT dumbed down for little kids and could appeal to a wider age group. It was like the comic books but brought to tv animation. Its a shame that a few final episodes of the last season started to lose its sophistication and eventually tv execs sort to cater for a younger audience who wanted to see x-men crossed ... In the beginning, God created man. And He saw that it was good. Then Man created Pokemon. And it too, was good.

This is the first, and in my opinion, definitive, movie that features the Japanese creations, Pokemon. A craze that took the whole world by storm back in the late 90's, and is still going strong today. You only have to look at the number of Pokemon movies that exist now to see that. But there can only be one number one. And this is it. Without a doubt. I can honestly say that even now, eight years on, this movie still looks as good as new. The chemistry between Ash and Pikachu is as high as it ever was, and the characters all work well together, the old guard of Ash, Misty and Brock providing the majority of the lines.

The storyline ... Read More:

This is the second in the series of the 90's animated version of the Moomins.

As with the previous release, the picture and sound quality are not perfect and the quality control could have been better(on the list of episodes, one episode is incorrectly titled 'Hurry Up Snifkin',instead of Snufkin),but there's no major issues.

And as I have mentioned on my review of the first series of the Moomins I am prepared to put up with a few flaws just to see this imaginative, charming and mystical cartoon again!

If anyone is interested in the other series of the Moomins,I have emailed Stax Entertainment who is involved in producing these DVD's and they told me "Volume 3 will be out around Easter next year with Volume 4 around September next year and ... Read More:

the simpsons are still coming up with the same old rubbish but futurama is brilliant and series three contains my personal favourite episode "a tale of two santas" and my favourite moment as the crew try to save bender dressed as santa and they all enter the room saying "im santa clause" and zoidberg comes in and says "and I'm his friend Jesus!" absolute classic
