101.Blackjack [1993] from: Manga Entertainment

DVD : Blackjack [1993]

I bought the film based on the good reviews it got here on Amazon, but I was disappointed, and I don't think it was because of my high expectations either. The concept looked very interesting, this seemed like a great thriller, but sadly, it wasn't. For some reason the film never engages you, there is never any real suspense or excitement. I guess you could say that I wouldn't have cared if someone had turned the film off midway through.

I find myself thinking that this might have been a super thriller if there had been a different director or scriptwriter team, I feel the problem with the slow drive of the film lies in the execution. It's a shame that it ended up being so boring.

Here I will be reviewing the binding in which this specific edition is presented in - the series is reviewed in depth elsewhere. The image on this page doesn't accurately show the appearance of the product, so I'll try and relate it's appearance as best I can.

The DVD collection is presented in a small (about A5) book, made of faux leather, in a blood red shade. The cover is delicately embossed with patterns (as is the back cover) and on the spine and the front cover, there is a large image and the text "Wolf's Rain" and "Book of the Moon" are created with gold foil blocking. This gives it an authentic book appearance. I am slightly disappointed with the quality of this however; on my copy, there are parts where the gold seems to have ... Read More:

Fruits Basket = Love

An absolutly beautiful anime! I was hooked from start to finish. The characters are all so cute and the story is so strong and meaningful!

Though the series is only 26 episodes it is definatly worth buying! You won't regret it!

After the long wait after series 2 part 2, Naruto returns with series 3 part 1. This 13 episode set contains episodes 53 -65.
This set carries on where the last one finished off, with the introduction of Jiraiya, the toad mountain sage. Jiraiya appears to be a comedic character who has immense strength; so much that Naruto gets him to train him for the final exam. The first part of this set is quite light hearted and fun, as opposed to the more serious tone of the last series, which is a breath of fresh air. Episodes 53 - 59 are set in th month leading up to the final exam. These episodes consist of Naruto's training, some characterisation of the villain Gaara and a filler episode involving the mischiveous Konohamaru. The final exam is a tornament ... Read More:

The action of Hayao Miyazaki's latest animated fantasy takes place in an undetermined place and age, though it looks like the late 19th century (allowing for a number of anachronistic details) in a Central European kingdom (the Austro Hungarian empire of the time seems the country where the action takes place, and the book happens in a place called Ingary, though the kingdom in the movie has a large port by the sea, which the Austro Hungarian empire didn't). The story starts with a young woman called Sophie working in a hat factory who is suddenly turned into a 90 year woman through a curse by some witch. She then tries to meet the wizard Howl, to see if he can help her. As it later turns out, Howl faces some curses of its own. The story soon becomes very convoluted, ... Read More:

This series ended up being very disappointing. Echoing the thoughts of others who have the same views about Saikano, it tried hard to be a tragic romance story and turned out to be more boring than depressing - it didn't make me watery eyed. There are series that depress viewers without making it obvious the plan is to pull on the viewers heart strings and there are series that make it so obvious that you expect people to die just to get a reaction, and Saikano is the latter.

Before watching I thought it was going to turn out to be a winner in my eyes - Great looking box/DVD art, a depressing sounding story, short length and only a £10 fee required to own the series. I couldn't see how, for such a small amount of money, a fairly highly rated show could fail ... Read More:

...Well I say continue, but what I really mean is drag on for ages! In the last volume of MAR (pronounced M-air) the young spiky haired hero Ginta Toramizu and his comrades of Team MAR entered the Chess Piece War Games. In these games they have to fight one on one matches against different chess pieces in a tournament. As they progress through the rounds, the ranks of their enemies increase and the battles ultimately become tougher. These battles continue into this third volume and are going to continue in the next volume too. Although this makes for some nice characterisation, the sheer number of episodes devoted to these war games is just ridiculous. Furthermore, some of the enemy chess pieces they come across are just stupid. Many of them are really annoying like the squeaky voiced little ... Read More:

I purchased tokko randomly after reading some of the reviews below,
not expecting much more than another forgetable, seen it all before
anime that doesnt really bring anything new to the table.

And that preconception turned out to be quite true, Tokko rehashes the same
ground as such animé as bleach, gantz, urotsukidoji and hellsing,
the plot being pretty much a pastiché of all four, demons running
riot behind the scenes of everyday life in tokyo, only a select few
fighting against the odds to stop them and at times becoming something
similar to that which they hunt creating a moral dilemma,
leading to self sacrifice etc etc.

The thing about tokko is that it does add something a bit different to the
above formula ... Read More:
