DVD : Death Note - Volume 1 (Episodes 1-8)
It's difficult to know where to start on a review for Death Note - there are just so many great things to write about!

For starters, the animation is very fluid, and also includes some very impressive camera work; additionally, the characters are all detailed and well drawn. There are also some really nice cinematic touches (in the closing credits for example, it's drawn like an old film roll), and the whole thing is a pleasure to watch.

As the other reviews here state, the story is uniformly brilliant. Without giving too much away, high school student Light Yagami picks up a book (the Death Note) dropped by a bored death god, and, having discovered its powers, decides to rid the world of criminals by killing them all. ... Studio Ghibli has built quite a reputation over the years as being one of the foremost delivers of Anime. Even in small Denmark Ghibli's movies have succeeded in entertaining the audience and now anime/manga is not as alien as it once was. Globalization has taken its turns and thank god for that. Ghibli has delivered yet another sweet and enjoyable movie that is far from the and maybe even above the average Hollywood movie. Whisper of the heart tells the story of the female protagonist Shizuku who studies at junior high school and reads a lot of books, which she borrows from the school library. After a while she recognizes that the same person has borrowed the same books, she borrows before her, and she intends to find out who this person is. After a while ... Read More:

GitS Standalone Complex is a truer companion to the original then the actual second movie Innocents. Anima TV shows & movies don't always co-exist in continuity terms. As many times they take the main themes & ideas reusing them in a new way appropriate to the storytelling medium. So don't get hung up on how all this ties into the movie as it doesn't, just enjoy it as a standalone story.

All the main Section 9 movie characters are here, plus a couple of new ones. Other then the Tachikomas, these new characters are mostly in the background not really being developed much beyond their Section 9 function. While the Tachikomas are used for comic relief and some of the philosophical ideas later on in the series about Ghosts; I really enjoyed ... Read More:

I bought this anime without really knowing what the series was all about, but it was certainly worth taking the chance!

Beautifully animated and beautifully scored, Elfen Lied was gripping from start to finish. To be honest, I wasn't overly impressed when I saw the first episode, as gore and nudity was rife. Fortunately however, although there is a lot of nudity, it never borders on the pornographic.

Some of the scenes are pretty sickening though, and although it was an insight into what humans can do to each other for their own personal profit, it isn't a series I'd like to watch with anyone else.

I don't know what the English dub is like (all the ones I've heard so far have been pretty dire so I don't bother anymore), but the Japanese ... Read More:

Naruto returns for a second series after the amazing first one. It carries on exactly where it left off. With the remaining candidates for the chunin exams, including the nine rookies of the leaf village, about to enter the forest of death.

The forest of death story arc takes up half of this series boxset. It sees the genin ninja using their skills to gather the earth and heaven scrolls and to get to the tower at the centre of the forest within 5 days. Each team starts off with either a heaven or an earth scroll, so the objective of the exam is to steal the required scroll from rival teams, while at the same time trying to protect their own scroll. This leads to an action packed story arc full of twists and turns in the plot. There is also some lovely characterisation with ... Read More:

I haved loved both Ursula Le Guin's books and most of Studio Ghibli's films, and this film does justice to neither. I understand a film's need need to condense from the written word, and to find a visual way to tell a story, but there was no need to shift Jed's shadowy doppelganger onto another character altogether, completely distorting both of them. By using the title it has probably killed any chance of a good film - or three good films - being made from the material any time soon.
For those who don't know the books, but do appreciate the fresh and original storytelling of Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, this feels more like a hackneyed Hollywood epic except for being a bit muddled. It has the fine design and animation we expect from Ghibli but falls short where it matters. I ... Read More:

crazy, colourful, hard to follow,,all terms read about this film prior to purchase..in my opinion these are all true, but this doesnt make it a bad film. Not all manga reveals itself at the first watch...fans of ghost in the shell could agree to that. The actual story is not too hard to follow, but because of the top quality animation and visual candy being thrown about,,dreams intermingling with reality,,then at first view you could miss some details. All in all i enjoyed this film and would recommend
it,,it reminded me of 'spirited away' crossed with 'ghost in the shell,,a futuristic sci fi cop show but with mad and colourful visuals...enjoy..I only marked it down as it might not be everyones cup of tea..

Hayao Miyazaki animated feature of a 13-old year witch leaving his parents and settling in a new town to form a (broom-based) delivery service is irresistible. As in many of his movies, the protagonist here is a plucky heroine defying all odds. What I found most enjoyable about the movie - though - is its background details. Miyazaki loves European culture - and the movie is set in never land Europe - a fantasy Europe that never existed. A lot of the clothes and the technology suggests the 1950s and the 1960s - but filtered through Miyazaki's sensibility (there are a number of anachronistic details that suggest perhaps a mid-20th century Europe if World War II had never happened). Miyazaki uses a lot of different sources in his movies - and they not always coalesce. In Porco Rosso, they didn't (Fascist ... Read More:
