This Volume 3 set of Death Note covers Episodes 17-24, which is the halfway point of the series - it is also notably the episodes in which the 'feel' of the anime takes several turns (toward the convoluted and chaotic).

This is not to say, however, that the series suffers.

In fact, this only punches up the thrill of this series as both Light and L are working together against a third Kira, and so you root for the both of them to 'win' and discover who it is; you have an unexpected show of brilliance by the 'everyday' character of Matsuda, and you have the police force working full time on the barest of clues to gain entry and capture the new Kira.

The opening and ending songs do change; my theory on ... Read More:

This is my first posting on this site so forgive any newness!!

I have returned to Anime after a gap, in which a lot has changed in my life. I have to say that I was wonderfully suprised by the sensitivity of the depiction of emotion and the slow developement of the main characters and the intertwining of their lives through previously repressed memories. That it took almost up to the climactic confrontation to reveal the full details is greatly to the credit of this series.

Yes there is a full range of decapitation and gore but many questions remain even up to and including the beautifully judged closing frames.

In the beginning, God created man. And He saw that it was good. Then Man created Pokemon. And it too, was good.

This is the first, and in my opinion, definitive, movie that features the Japanese creations, Pokemon. A craze that took the whole world by storm back in the late 90's, and is still going strong today. You only have to look at the number of Pokemon movies that exist now to see that. But there can only be one number one. And this is it. Without a doubt. I can honestly say that even now, eight years on, this movie still looks as good as new. The chemistry between Ash and Pikachu is as high as it ever was, and the characters all work well together, the old guard of Ash, Misty and Brock providing the majority of the lines.

Probably my favourite Miyazaki film (for now!). The superb animation combined with a rather melancholic tone link it quite firmly with its more famous descendent "Spirited Away". However this film is more whimsical and has some great set pieces that inject a lot of energy. The backdrop of romantic 1930s adventure, the threat of Italian fascism and the trauma of war all underlie, as usual, an apparently mere 'cartoon' or children's tale.

I think the other reviews here do justice in saying how good this film is, so I won't focus on praising the film. However, I would like to inform you about this version of the film. For the average person looking to buy this dvd, this information may not be that useful but for an fan it may be relevant.

So....

There are other editions of this film including streamline and manga editions.

This is the Optimum Asia release. This Optimum re-release marks a general improvement over the previous Manga edition. Whereas that version came without anamorphic enhancement and was essentially lacklustre in the visual department, here we find a fine clarity, superb colours and anamorphic transfer. That said, we also arrive at an NTSC ... Read More:

Both Stand Alone Complex series are absolutely stunning. Amazing art work, great (if rather complex plots), well thought out characters, this series has it all. Because of the complexity of the plot you can't afford to watch it half-heartedly. This however is one of the best anime series out there today and you don't really need to have seen any of the films either. I can't recommend it enough.
Suffice to say, this is so good even non anime fans may appreciate it. I shalln't go into detail but the story weaves intricatelly, incorporating all the main characters and little side stories that add to the whole plot. If you buy only one anime this year make it this one. Well the first series really, make this your second one!

i purchased this film because i enjoyed paprika, but this is a superior movie on all points..the artwork is lush, the animation is really good, and the story is very interesting. It deals with relationships in a very adult
way so its not for the younger viewer. The style of the film is a little of the wall at times but youll find yourself actually caring about the characters by the end...a modern day masterpiece.
