Anime is often quite strange, particularly, I suspect, to the Western viewer. If you're looking for a fine example of this then look no further than the utterly bonkers, 'Colorful'. It consists of several short segments loosely joined together by repeating characters and situations, all of them devoted to making fun of the male obsession of catching a glimpse of the hidden delights of female underwear. Resolutely PC viewers may be appalled at this, but bear in mind that it is the male of the species that always comes out worse in these short films, while the females are uniformly portrayed as charming, innocent, intelligent, slightly bemused, or just plain sexy. For a start they are lovingly rendered, whereas the males are deliberately badly ... Read More:

I wasn't expecting much, but it offers the best human story in any animations I've seen. The animation is not great, I think it added the touch of realism to the film. Do see it if you are looking for a good touching story about human relations.

I definately think, that out of all the Pokemon movies (and there are dissapointingly a lot of them which cheapens the whole franchise) Pokemon The Movie 2000 is one of, if not the best. It's only competator is obviously the first movie which cannot be surpassed by any of the others. The plot is very typical and uninspired but when I first watched this so many years ago, it inspired me. Pokemon has always managed to inspire me and it still does now. I JUST bought the movie again after not seeing it for many many years and I enjoyed it just the same if not more. I think this movie gets the balance right between the new Pokemon that are starting to creep into the Pokemon world and the old ones we love so much. There's great humor delivered by our ... Very smart and sophisticated detective/fantasy. You will never guess what happens next.
The animation is not terribly flashy or bright, but good quality and realistic. If you like thinking films - you'll love this one.

Overall looking from a movie point of view, it's not bad at all. As a fan of Pokemon i like watching the series, the movies and playing the games. I like the way the movie was produced and done. I like the visual effects, which some say may not work. But i think overall it's a nice family film, and i can't see a Pokemon fan being disappointed. But great to check out!

`Pom Poko' was one of those Studio Ghibli films I decided to leave to last in my purchase of the entire collection on DVD, mainly due to the majority of reviews here on Amazon, which generally consist of less enthusiastic comments in comparison to other more commercially succesful features released by this renowned Japanese studio. But having finally watched the film for myself I'm even more surprised by the uncomplimentary reviews, because in both style and story I found `Pom Poko' to be absolutely flawless.

The film has magic galore and an original ecological morality tale at its heart, which is in the same vein as `Nausicaa: Valley of the Wind' and `Princess Mononoke' with their man versus nature overtones, but `Pom Poko' is a very different animal ... Read More:

I got this movie for my birthday, and I watched it about three times over. If you haven't seen the movie, then this is the story.
A young boy (who is actually a young Prof. Oak) ventures into the forest where Celebi lurks. He doesn't know this, but when a Scyther and Houndoom catches Celebi, the boy (named Sammy) saves the Celebi. It travels to the future and they meet Ash, Brock and Misty and Pikachu, but Celebi has already fled. They find the afraid Celebi in a small cave, but Sammy takes it and Celebi takes a great liking to Sammy and Ash. When Celebi grows weak, they bathe it in the Lake of Life.
A serious Team Rocket member possesses a ball called a 'Dark Ball' which catches the Pokemon and turns it evil. It catches Celebi, and the Rocket commands Celebi ... Read More:

I think this film is wonderful. The CG animation is amazing - there are moments, particularly the character close-ups, where you can't quite be sure whether you're watchig real actors. This film bombed big time at the cinema, and one of the reasons suggested was actually the fact that the characters were so life-like they were almost creepy. Another reason is perhaps the fact that this is a stand alone piece of work and has no relationship with any of the Final Fantasy RPGs, which probably infuriated the fan boys. However, the story is mature and deals with mature issues - namely friendship, love, death and the afterlife, the individuals part in the big picture etc etc, but it's also a fully fledged action film with some pretty amazing set pieces and really exciting moments. ... After seeing the 'ghosts' at the beginning of the film, you assume that effectively knowing the end is going to spoil it in some way - but it doesn't. The film fills in the gaps and brings the very human story of two siblings fighting for survival during the Second World War in Japan.

This isn't a film for very young children as the message would probably get lost, and some of the imagery might be a bit distressing - it's meant to be. This is a film with a simple story, but dealing with complex relationships and politics. You long for young Seita and his sister Setsuko to triumph in a situation beyond desperate, and though many of the scenes are very emotional - it doesn't stop them from being tremendously beautiful.

This is one of only a handful of films I've seen ... Read More:

I agree with pretty much all of the above reviews.

I would like to comment on the b-ray presentation, Picture quaality in nigh on suberb unfortunately, I did notice several scenes littered throughout the movie where backgrounds suffered from posterization. Now, I'm not sure if these flaws were present in the original picture or not. Scenes like Aki's ship landing in the opening 3:20, in the council chambers at 21:07 etc. For me that cost the review 1 star.

Sound quality is faultless.
