Finally The Who and their management have used a bit of imagination and put together a really good package. The LA Tommy show and greatest hits encore (previously issued on VHS) captures a particularly interesting incarnation of the band. The emphasis is on doing the music justice and the backing musicians supply the brass parts and extra backing vocals that bring Tommy to life. Townshend is subdued, but Daltrey and Entwistle more than compensate and it would be fair to say that Simon Phillips on drums pushes all of them to perform well, though at times his virtuosity overshadows the band.

However, the excitement of the old raw and ragged Who is long gone, but the music stands the test of time without it and seems to benefit from ... Read More:

This should really be called the Joe Esposito Collection. The man is on screen so much. He really loves the sound of his own voice.

There is some decent footage on this collection, it has to be said, and its worth buying just for that and the insight into the Elvis/Priscilla relationship is good. However, what is disconcerting is the sight of Sheila Ryan and that odd tattoo and other "girlfriends" talking about him - they didn't really seem to have anything new to say.

Like volume I, this is split into 6 episodes and has some bonus stuff about the Colonel and his relationship with Elvis. The DVD has some desktop stuff if you're interested.

However, the most disconcerting thing of all is seeing "Dr Nick", ... Read More:

Classic album DVD's are a real delight and this one is no exception. Not only does Elton give ample time to explain the escapades of recording in England, Jamaica and France, but also we hear a lot from Bernie Taupin on his songwriting. Producer Gus Dudgeon does many analyses of songs by showing how each track was laid out separately giving an entirely new meaning to the creation of a song through his mixer. Davey Johnstone does great famous riffs from the album and it is interspersed with the actual song with neat segues. The concert footage is a bit fuzzy, but the showmanship and the songs are displayed with great affection. Some fans might complain that only about a half-dozen songs are analyzed with a back-up story, but it is well worth hearing ... Read More:

'This Is Tom Jones' was an ATV/ABC variety show which run for a couple of years between 1969-71. It probably goes without saying the star of the show was none other than the charismatic powerhouse voiced Tom Jones himself.

To use words like charismatic and powerhouse voiced in addition to elecrifying performer and amazingly versitile singer is no idle boast when describing Tom Jones at this period of his career as he literally tore into the songs (especially the uptempo ones) with an incredible sense of abandonment in addition to displaying a rare sensitivity when the need arose with many of the ballads. His fantastic stage presence with his incredibly exciting moves (which drove some women crazy) is truly a sight to behold. In performances ... Read More:

This is FAB! I love MJ at the best of times, but he really surpassed himself with the Thriller album and video. "The Making of Thriller" is a great way to see Michael in his former glory, before the baby-dangling, the surgery and the funfair. He's so cute too!

Elton John was past his career high when this was filmed in 1979. Punk and New Wave were 'in' and Elton was seen as a dinosaur. Having announced his retirement from the stage 2 years earlier this was Eltons attempt to get back to basics.

The first half of the show is just Elton and Pianos. For anybody who is a fan this is reason enough to buy the DVD.
Its also worth saying that apart from a few chorus/tremelo effects the Piano sound is not cluttered with strings like on some modern recordings. His modern Piano generates a string sound based on what he's playing - which I don't like!

The second half of the show starts with Elton playing Funeral for a Friend and the entry of Ray Cooper. This is done in suitably dramatic style and Ray takes ... Read More:
