A rousing story about a black platoon facing prejudice and annilation during the American civil war. Matthew Broderick's finest performance as the leader of the first all black regiment fighting the confederates and racism from their own Union army. Supported by the fine Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington. The plight of these brave men will emotionally move you, possibly to tears, although mine was more of a controlled welling, though my lower lip did quiver when the credits rolled.

This film is very much of its time. It is light entertainment and all the better for that. Yes perhaps the story is a bit thin, the plot just a bit predictable. But Cliff Richard, playing very much the "Elvis", as he was seen at the time, sings his heart out and acts surprisingly well. In fact the whole cast is very well done, with The Shadows (the guys on the bikes lead by the inimitable Hank Marvin) making some nice little cameo performances, and playing too. Una stubbs is of course very good too as you might expect. At the time, taking an old London bus on an adventure like this would have been seen as nigh on impossible.Exotic and glamorous too! But the whole film captures a simpler more gentle era. It even captures the now defunct works in ... Read More:

The car chase in Bullitt may seem a bit less impressive than it once did because filmmakers have been trying to top it for the best part of four decades. More of a cat-and-mouse game than a demolition derby, its overshadowed by the film's other action setpieces - a murder in a safe house, a tense chase in a hospital and a great airport finale that Michael Mann ripped off wholesale in Heat. A beautifully constructed star vehicle for Steve McQueen at his best, it's pretty much the prototype for every Hollywood cop movie that followed, but benefits from good casting (Robert Vaughn, Jacqueline Bisset, Don Gordon, Simon Oakland, Robert Duvall), better characterisation than the norm and a low key approach from director Peter Yates that makes the highs seem ... I love this film! Shakespeare converted well into film form is a delight (see Branagh's 'Much Ado' as well) and this film is excellent.
All the characters are note perfect, and there is not a single weak performance amongst them.
Although some scenes are swapped around or merged, that helps to show the cohesion of the plot strands and works extremely well.
Characters have a dark as well as a light side; Sir Toby is a classic funny drunk, but he's also a man who is exploiting Sir Andrew for his money and keeping Maria at arm's length. Mel Smith is absolutely brilliant in the role.
Feste the Clown is a much more tragic figure than the only usually portrayed; a man with a deep melancholy, driven back to Olivia's house for lack of food and ... Read More:

Some might describe these movies as what we used to laugh at. I must confess that I still do, and I always will laugh at these wonderful old British films.

Margaret Rutherford is the definitive Miss Marple in my opinion. Later productions (for TV) are watchable and enjoyable, and may be more true to Agatha Christie. Here however, is a compelling strength of character and a thick seam of comedy running right through four flawless performances. Somehow, I can watch them again and again, and still laugh at things like a theatrical gesture, or a piece of dryly comic dialogue.

Praise to Plymouth's own Ron Goodwin for composing that distinctive theme that always brings a smile to my face, because I know what is in store.

I am going to assume most of you interested in this DVD know the story of Douglas Bader the legendary WWII fighter pilot who lost his legs, nearly died and still flew fighter planes, learnt to walk and drive again a man who simply didn't understand how to fail. An inspiration this film depicts the story of Bader and his life until the end of the war. This is a great film and one I thoroughly enjoy everytime I watch it.

I just love films like this, the special effects are fantastic, they dont make films like this anymore, its a pity as we english used to be leading the best film industry in the world. now we are hopless at making great films our American cousins have lead the way for such a long time.I also like this film as its location is Canary Islands in Tenerife, it is a lovely place its well worth a visit.

This has my two favourite Cagney movies and is worth buying just for those two (White Heat,Roaring Twenties). Throw in the other two and it's a steal.

If you like Cagney, old noir, gangster movies in general of just like old films then this is a terrific purchase. It's a proper set as well, with each DVD in its own case and not some cheap fold out sleeve.

Excellent films.
