How can I communicate the aberration that this represents?
I hope that a number of you will be repelled simply to hear that the roles of Hermia and Helena are taken (and then forgotten about) by those mascots of "Pretty but Pointless", Calista Flockhart and Anna Friel. Calista Flockhart rides a Penny Farthing bicycle and blows the tumbling tendrils of hair off her forehead regularly - but it gets worse, even when the talent gets more accomplished.
Stanley Tucci would get laughed off a senior school stage for the way that he tries to invest Puck with thoughtfulness and fun: Jimmie Krankee would have done a better job. Rupert Everett's Oberon is reminescent of a Studio 54 Go-Go dancer murmuring something he has a distant memory of, ... Read More:

During excavations of Hob's Lane underground station, a mysterious object is discovered. The army led by the stubborn Colonel Breen(Julian Glover) believe it to be an unexploded bomb, Professor Bernard Quatermass isnt so sure, especially when he starts to dig into the history of the surrounding area, with reports of apparitions and other paranormal activity. Then the object cracks on the inside, and Quatermass's fears are proved right...
This is a marvellous film, Hammer at the peak of their creative powers, assured direction by Roy Ward Baker, an excellent cast, and of course Nigel Kneale's inventive story coming to life. Its the Origin of the Species given an unearthly twist, with long dormant race memories resurfacing as the strange object ... Read More:

There are problems with this film. Firstly, it has an inadequate score. What it needs is a grand theme tune which recurs throughout, but it doesn't have one. Secondly, it has been clumsily edited together by what seems to have been a passing butcher. Both the editing and the lack of a decent soundtrack suggest that little attention was paid to artistic or aesthetic considerations once the actual filming had been completed. I would also say the quality of the acting is patchy, at best. Rod Steiger is actually quite good as Napoleon, managing to convey the multi-faceted nature of the man in spite of the occasional banalities of the script. Christopher Plummer looks alright as Wellington, but he never quite seems to inhabit the character or capture the substance ... Read More:

There is no escaping the fact this movie has one of the most haunting use of camera movement ,light compositions and sound editing creating echoes to explosions in harmony with the horror which is chillingly psychological rather then bloody .

No dead cats or decapatitaed skulls or limbs can alternate for the haunted look on the agonized faces of the characters as they struggle to save themselves and their sanity ,the fact it is broodingly driving them to psychosis is presented as a brilliant chess game where the 4 protagonists love and loathe each other .

They are paranormal psychics or just mediums or ordinary human beings trying to come to terms with their own dilemmas is even more haunting then the house which is magnificently evil and one ... Read More:

Garland has a pretty nasty voice by any measure, and the songs themselves set a high standard in banalty.

The awful sweetness of this DVD would make a hardened sailor wretch, but the thing trots along briskly enoough, for which it merits 2, not 1 stars.

Yet another Tom Baker classic! (seriously, how many weren't?!!)
Strong horror element to this with a creepy atmosphere, and the planet itself is a TRIUMPH of set design; exotic and nightmarish, almost alive in itself!
The main monster, a creature made of anti matter is effective, and well rendered visually for the time (NOT a man in a rubber suit here!). Definiteley inspired by the Id monster from the SciFi classic, Forbidden Planet.
The acting is good with an interesting mix of characters, in the crew stationed on the planet. There are shades of Aliens/The Thing as the 'Evil' of the story picks the men off one by one.

One of my favs from long ago and well presented on DVD with some great features, especially re the set design.

Sometimes you come across a film that transends normal expectations and criticism. 'Classic' might be overused, but if there was ever a film that deserved such status, it is this one. A simple tale - post war Italy and a father's efforts to better himself and his family. And then a bicycle is stolen - that's all. But here we have a man losing everything of what little he has. He must retrieve it, to the point of obsession. If you have even the slenderest of hearts this rough around the edges, black and white masterpiece will move you to the core. The key relationship is that of a son with his dad - it illuminates the whole experience. Don't expect sloppy sentiment - just brilliant story telling and scene setting and 'real' acting.

If you don't see this film ... Read More:

I recall seeing these two films many years ago during their initial release, and being a Doctor Who fan, welcomed them in this 2 disc box set.

They are rather dated now, with cheap looking sets, exaggerated colour, and camp acting. But they are also a fond look back at the early years of Doctor Who, which by the time these films had been released the series had been broadcast by BBC Television since November 1963.

The first story based on the original transmission which was shown between December 1963 and February 1964 remains to this day one of the all time classic Doctor Who. The film version however, seems a rather rushed affair covering the basic storyline when the Doctor lands on the planet Skaro and finds an abandoned city. It isn't very long when ... Read More:
