There was a type of British comedy film which they were careful never to send over to the States. I suspect it was because in their hearts they knew that some time in the future Masterpiece Theater was going to do more for America's image of Britain than Churchill, the Tudors and Noel Coward would do rolled into one. And these comedies would make Masterpiece Theater unbelievable. These were comedies that were just as brash and broad as Coward's diction was clipped and upper class. They were comedies for the working class, and in Britain that could be a bad thing as well as a good thing.

Sometimes the condescension is overwhelming. The stars were household names in England. Most of them came from the music halls and often were equally ... Read More:

I rented this film with expectations that if nothing else it might be quite good fun. It wasn't. It's not the worst film I've seen but it's the kind of thing that should have gone straight to video rather than into the cinemas.

What is so wrong with the film I hear you ask? OK here goes:

1. Some of the worst acting I have ever seen - truly woeful
2. An attempt to have a 'serious' storyline that in the end is completely unbelievable.
3. Too many characters that we concentrate on for 5-10 minutes of the film and therefore learn nothing about. This means we don't care about them. In any case the stories are so messed up that it's pretty hard to follow what exactly is going on.

So in summary a pretty weak film. ... Read More:

One of Danny Kaye's finer hours, this farce stands the test of time pretty well. Kaye was the Jim Carrey of his time - if you don't like his pratfalling style of physical comedy once, you won't ever like it - but even if not a fan of his particular brand of tomfoolery, the verbal patter alone is worth the price of admission.
The plot should be brushed over - it's intricate and daft as a good farce should be, revolving around mistaken identities and wooing the girl, and multiple characters up to nefarious deeds. Complications arise when Kaye tries to pretend he is the Jester, and is then hypnotised to believe he is a great swordsman and lover, and changes between identities at the snap of a finger. It is the wonderful script that makes the difference, particularly ... Read More:

Disney is not just responsible for some of the most popular animated children's films of all time, it was responsible for this 1963 family classic, too.

It's a wonderfully simple and sweet story; three animals have been left with one of the relatives of the family who look after them. One day, that man goes out, and thinking that they've been left for good, the three animals set out to find their way home - over a whopping 200 miles.

Amazingly this is actually based on a true story. The three animals in this film are an adorable Pitbull Terrier, Golden Retriever and Siamese cat, who have all been fantastically trained. There actually seems to be genuine affection between the three animals, in adorable moments when the three of them curl up together, ... Read More:

There are some films, such as "Casablanca," that should never be remade. David Lean's "Great Expectations" is one of them.

The cast--headed by John Mills as the grown-up Pip, and which includes the rotund Francis L. Sullivan as the lawyer Jagger (whose clients are hanged as a matter of course), Finlay Curry as the convict Magwitch, and Alec Guinness as Herbert Pocket--is pitch-perfect (although I always thought that Valerie Hobson was a bit of a disappointment after the brittle hauteur of Jean Simmons).

This film has everything: humor, suspense, and a lack of the sentimentality that seems to have crept into Dickensian films of late.

Lean, who was to become famous for his sweeping desolate landscapes of "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Dr. Zhivago," ... Read More:

If that was a film of duty and bravery, the only characters who meet both demands, were British commandos of 316. All other lines seem to be unrealistic. The facility that was depicted in the movie, is not a forced labor, but rather a holiday camp. Japanese staff had all possibilities to force POWs do whatever work, but Japs don't even tried, simply observing sabotage and malingering. British officers surrender, carry conference with the enemy, build the bridge for the enemy and even celebrate on this occasion. There is neither bravery nor duty here. Colonel Saito was right that they carry no shame - and this can be (and is underscored in the film?) the virtue of the Western man - to act dishonestly and still bear no shame, even claiming to have right for respect. But the same shameless virtue ... Read More:

A weird and nonsensical movie about the 'fab' four who shot to fame in the 60s.

Not having ever been a fan of The Beatles (but old enough to remember them) I was interested in seeing this film for curiosity reasons, to find out what all the fuss was about - needless to say, I was no more impressed for the benefit...

The main reason The Beatles were so big at the time, was the fact that there had been nothing quite like them previously, and consequently caught everyone's attention because of it - but that's about it! You've got four 'odd' looking (ugly?) guys, with perhaps the exception of Lennon who was a slightly better looking chap than the other three, basically fooling around throughout and being silly. I have to confess, I did find the music good though, ... Read More:

Picture this: Circa 1975, A class of 32 bored, inner city school, O level English kids, dragged off to an arts cinema to see a showing of Polanski's Macbeth. We settled down for a boring couple of hours messing about and talking. Five minutes into the film, you could have heard a pin drop. We were hooked.
We went from complete disinterest, to shakespeare fans in one afternoon. I will always be grateful to that young english teacher (whatever her name was?) for igniting a lifelong interest in literature. If our Headmaster/parents had known what we were going to see, I'm sure the trip would never have happened! But the quality of acting was such, that suddenly we all knew and understood olde worlde english, something which carried on through other plays we studied. We were lucky enough to have our study of ... Read More:
