DVD : Lady And The Tramp (2 Disc Special Edition) [1955]
I regard Lady and The Tramp as one the best Disney classics that I have watched. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this classic. Disney has delivered a masterpiece with this fine piece of animation feature length.

Lady and The Tramp truly reflects the key values and qualities of what Disney films entail, which include endless humour, uplifting music and colourful characters. The storyline is a sweet romantic tale about two loveable dogs; a Lady (Spaniel) and Tramp (Irish terrier) and the innocence of this special bonding is something to really admire. The setting of the movie is based in the 1950's, which is beautifully delivered with wonderful animation you can highly praise within that specific time. With technology highly available ... She's ready, but are you ready for her? In this magnificent film, Billy Wilder bites the hands that feeds him. Gloria Swanson dazzles as desperate, faded silent movie star Norma Desmond, who is trying to claw her way back to the top after years of seclusion in her Hollywood mansion on Sunset Boulvard. However, her time has been and gone, and at fifty years old, this seems impossible. When Joe Gillis (Holden), an equally desperate screenwriter, happens upon her mansion while fleeing some debt collectors, he finds the perfect way to make some money by using Norma. However, will he be able to escape her wrath when she discovers the truth? After all, in the immortal words of Desmond, "No-one ever leaves a star, that's what makes one a star....."

British silent Comedy at it's best. You just couldn't imagine the amount of scrapes you can get into by merely transporting one plank from A to B

'The King and I' is a much-loved family classic because it combines catchy songs with lush sets and an endearing, entertaining storyline. Like many musicals, it is overlong (I feel that musicals work best at about a 100 minute run time) and over-the-top, but it is wonderful escapism that the whole family can enjoy.

Yul Brynner won an Oscar for his turn as the King Of Siam, and he is very good in the role. English-rose Deborah Kerr plays her usual English rose role, as the live-in-governess to the King Of Siam's many, many children. Her Anna is a lovely, steadying presence to the theatrics of many other cast members (including Brynner). Kerr did play a lot of variations on the same role, but her acting talent gives each performance a slightly different quality. ... Read More:

Klaatu: This comes from our own planet, but if you threaten to extend your violence, this Earth of yours will be reduced to a burned-out cinder. Your choice is simple: join us and live in peace, or pursue your present course and face obliteration. We shall be waiting for your answer. The decision rests with you."IMDB

'The Day the Earth Stood Still' was one of the first movies in the 1950's to explore space travel and to provide a warning that "the use of violence as a solution to all problems" is an issue we need to face. All these years later we are still on this path and these words have not been taken seriously. This movie is known as the best Science Fiction movie ever written. 56 years later it still stands up. Patricia Neal had no idea this would ... Read More:

I first saw this film when I was a kid (it scared the hell out of me then), and I have returned to it several times over the years, each time thinking it better than the time before. Seeing that this nice DVD edition was available, I didn't hesitate. It's a beautifully restored presentation of the film, and the extras cover much interesting ground.

The film itself has a good script based on a brilliant idea, but it's the acting that will get to you, especially Bette Davis' fearless, endlessly varied performance as the grotesque, deteriorating title character. There is no trace of vanity in her looks or acting, and she seizes an already great part with a gusto that makes it A) impossible to picture anyone else in the role, and B) possible to think that this may in fact ... We've all heard the naff reviews over the years, my advice? Ignore them and check this out!
Negatives first-yes, the courtroom scenes can drag (but we soon lose those throughout the series) and some of the acting is dross (that's what you get employing theatre luvvies)
Positives-Colin Baker (top form, should have stayed on),the storylines (varying)and a superb ending.
By the end of this, you really wish the 6th Doctor would have remainied on and even Bonnie Langford seems less irritating from the series first 80s airing.
Loads of extras, good all-round boxset.

For under a fiver (just!) I think this series of Tom and Jerry DVD's are excellent value. The DVD itself is double-sided, which helps to pack all those great cartoons in, and thankfully their are no adverts at the start; you can be playing in under 20 seconds from when you've put the disc in!

Unfortunately, as I've found with all the Tom and Jerry DVD's so far, is that they've suffered the finger-wagging of middle class citizens who feel the need to place the title of 'Politically Incorrect' or certain aspects of the cartoons. This has resulted in the Black Mama (maid) having her voice completely re-dubbed in many of the cartoons, replaced by a woman who speaks each word in the clearest, most perfect notion, to take away any idea that she has Black Afro/carribean origins. This is very ... Read More:

A battered old army ambulance is the last chance for five allied warriers after the fall of Tobruk. Two nurses, one of whom is killed during the evacuation when the wagon is strafed by a German plane, a sergeant major from the regular army, a South African captain who is picked up on the outskirts of town, all led by an English captain played by John Mills, who is somewhat fond of the odd tipple or two. Although there are one or two run ins with the Germans, the main enemy is the desert. The direct route to safety along the coast has been cut off, forcing them into the depression where they encounter quicksand and giant sand dunes, plus the constant extremes of daytime heat and bitter cold nights.

Not really a war film in the true sense of the word, more a film of courage and adventure ... Read More:
