From the days when doorstop novels (or at least large chunks of them) were turned into films rather than mini-series, From Here to Eternity may be toned down to please both the censors and the US Army, whose co-operation was vital to the film, but it's still a superb piece of film-making that slips in a few powerful punches between the lines.

Set in Pearl Harbor in the months leading up to the Japanese attack, it focuses on two professional soldiers: Prewitt (Montgomery Clift), a hard-headed ex-boxer given 'the treatment' by his commanding officer to force him to fight in the regimental boxing championships, and the company's Top Sergeant (Burt Lancaster), who is having an affair with the officer's frigid wife (Deborah Kerr). ... The unrelenting echo of the sonar punctuates this understated J. Arthur Rank film with a taut atmosphere of suspense. Novelist Eric Ambler's intelligent script remains faithful to Nicholas Monserrat's novel about the last voyage of HMS Compass Rose and all who sailed on her. The splendid performances of Jack Hawkins as her captain and Donald Sinden as his #1 bring the novel to life, as do the performances of the entire ensemble cast, which includes Denholm Elliott. One of the best aspects of the Rank organization films of this era is the devotion that went into the delineation of even the minor characters.

Some viewers may shun this picture because it was filmed in black and white. This is a shame, because "The Cruel Sea" is so absorbing ... Read More:

I grew up watching this movie on VHS and know all the songs, I love the kooky edge Michael Crawford brings to his role, I find his high pitched feminine voice strangely uplifting, and Streisland as always is vocal perfection. Escapism set to music.

The synopsis for this prodoct is awful:

'The story of the fragile sentimentalism of a former prostitute who visits her sister only to be taunted mercilessly by her childish brother-in-law.'

First, the point of the play was that she wasn't meerly a prostitue- not to mention that we are never explicitly told that she is. Only that she slept around for shelter and food. This is not your average prostution as the synopsis makes out. Also, he brother-in-law isn't just 'childish'- what a stupid thing to say. He has been working class his whole life and is resentful that someone with an 'easy like' (in his opinion) is here lying to people and acting like she is better. He doesnt 'taunt' her like a child. He destroys her sanity further, purposly, ... Read More:

just watched the blu ray version of this classic movie, and i must say for most part it looks positively stunning! considering its age it puts many modern films to shame! and with plenty of extras to keep most movie fans happy its a great example of what can be done with the extra space that blu ray discs have to offer.Th Adventures of Robin Hood [Blu-ray] [1938] [US Import] oh just to confirm the disc came from america and is region free playing without any problems on my playstation 3.

Now live in Australia and I have introduced this film to many kids over here who are totally in love with this and watch it over and over.Think we are all in our late forties early fifties who remember this and for some reason it has a hold on everyone who saw it.In london about five years ago there was a radio programme about it saying there is now a cult following, check a web sight. They were likening it to fascism and really weird stuff but admitted it was crazy fun.Leave CGI behind people, forget expensive productions and wallow in this time old fantasy, kids five six etc will love it.

This is real telly history. The whole Doctor Who/Tardis concept still astounds me with the imagination that went into its creation. The original mass of sound effects that was the opening theme was changed years ago, but not for the better. The light distortions the bass sounds and the asthmatic Tardis sounds, with howling ,fading echo were all there and gave the show a totally original look and feel .
The'unearthly child, both versions are good to watch. Introducing a great cast headed by the wonderful William Hartnell. The stone age story was alright, although the arrival in the middle of nowhere by the Tardis at the beginning was visually stunning. As was the arrival in the petrified forest in the Dalek story, that was genuinley scary. There ... Read More:

A wonderful performance. I loved first watching it 20 years ago. McQueen's charisma is unbeatable. They should never have bothered with the Brosnan remake.

"The Time Machine" remains a timeless film although the special effects in this 50 year old film are now somewhat dated. Rod Taylor plays the time traveller who travels forward in time by tens of thousands of years to find humanity divided into two; living on the Earth's surface are the Eloi, a passive, stupid but beautiful people who are preyed upon by the subterranean cannibalistic Morlocks. The hideous Morlocks do all the work while the Eloi live lives of idle leisure.Clearly the film is making inferences about the class system on Earth in the current age, perhaps taking things to extremes to make a point. When I was younger I found the scenes where Taylor fought the Morlocks in their cave terrifying , but the passage of time has dimmed their impact somewhat. However "The Time Machine" ... Read More:
