This is the first Spaghetti western and a superb film. Both Clint Eastwood and Sergio Leone are on top form and the storyline, dialogue and action are tremendous.

A classic.

This movie is very inaccurate and does not correspond to the events described in the Bible. Even worse than that --- they couldn't even get the names right --- e.g. Yochebed is called Jochabel etc. In the Bible God sends Moses but in the movie it is Joshua who does this first (and God merely (and seemingly reluctantly) confirms it with a barely audible voice from a shining (not burning as in the Bible) tree (not a bush as in the Bible). The list of errors is too big to mention them all here. Suffice it to say that I am surprized that even in 1956 people were so degenerate as to watch this rubbish and call it "Bible epic". It is more appropriate for the current times when people call white black and black white.

There was a type of British comedy film which they were careful never to send over to the States. I suspect it was because in their hearts they knew that some time in the future Masterpiece Theater was going to do more for America's image of Britain than Churchill, the Tudors and Noel Coward would do rolled into one. And these comedies would make Masterpiece Theater unbelievable. These were comedies that were just as brash and broad as Coward's diction was clipped and upper class. They were comedies for the working class, and in Britain that could be a bad thing as well as a good thing.

Sometimes the condescension is overwhelming. The stars were household names in England. Most of them came from the music halls and often were equally big on radio. A few ... Read More:

American films now are routinely full of violence and swearing (though curiously never all that much sex) but are at heart almost invariably juvenile, soft-headed and sentimental. I was shocked by this film - which contains one "Bastard!" and some off-screen violence portrayed by means of a scream - because of the brutal adult honesty of the dialogue and the tough bleak view of human existence. Paul Newman is mesmerising, a great actor and a true star; the histrionics of Damon, Di Caprio, Pitt etc laughable by comparison. George C Scott is maybe even a shade better. The film lets the viewer inhabit a world he wouldn't otherwise know: the seedy smoke-filled pool rooms, gambling tables, bars of a nameless American city. It's not the glossy - and now so often CGI-d - fantasy ... Read More:

This is one of my favourite musicals of all time. I'm pleased to see that this latest version offers a choice of ratio as I am fed up with squinting at my old extra widescreen version. I shall be putting this on my wish list for Christmas! My daughter and I have been watching this film for years and just recently she spotted something odd. For trivia lovers everywhere, have a look at the scene where the brothers are pacing up and down while Millie gives birth to her baby upstairs. At the very back Ephraim is pacing up and down - except it isn't him but some random guy we've never seen before. Each time he stops pacing he is conveniently hidden by the stepladder so you can't see his face. Presumably, Ephraim took the day off and they dragged this poor bloke in to make up the ... suffering defines the human spirit of survival-true-and here
steinbeck was giving a simple message -survival is for the fittest in any civilization whether democratic or fascist, here the oklahoma dustbowl is the land of dispossessed and their suffering is the message to the fulfillment of their broken dreams ,poverty can be a curse and it is restrictwed not only to africa but white american kids dying of kwashiorkor secondary to malnutrition.

ford gets the steinbeck message across with simplicity and the materialism is not crticised just observed as a reality while the people are evicted from ancestral homes and they die and starve on route 66.

the movie is sentimental ,emotional and intelligent all at the same time as human existence itself .

A fantastic film that won quite a few awards. Even though the film is in black and white it captures the heartache, indignity, faith, and a true story of Bernadette Soubirous and the struggles of a poor family living in one tiny room and Bernadette suffering ill health with Asthma. Bernadette was 14yrs old when the first apparition appeared, she had over 18 visions from Our Lady at the Grotto in France in 1858. She died in 1879 and was Canonized. Lourdes is celebrating it's 150th year where over 8 million people visit the Grotto every year, bathe in the freezing cold spring water and people come in Procession to celebrate Our Lady apparitions. This Year Pope Benedict XVI will be celebration Mass in Lourdes on the 13th September due to 150 years of the Apparitions. A number of crutches hang above ... Read More:

Having seen 'The London That Nobody Knows' as a support ( I suppose I could just as easily have bought a truss) many moons ago ( Too many to painlessly recall ), I just had to have it when it came out on DVD; why?
Who knows, having thrashed around the dingier parts of London at that time I surmise that I may just be wallowing in nostalgia - fun isn't it?
I wholeheartedly agree with the other reviewers comments, although it appears to me that James Mason, at times, looks decidedly ill-at-ease, nonetheless it's worth every penny to see what we have lost.

As for 'Bicycles', just what is it all about? If it is meant to be allegorical, sorry but the allegory is lost on me (Nothing new there then), and what is an unaccompanied child doing tootling around the Capital? Sorry ... Read More:

Tracy Lords is getting married again. This time to a man who worked his way to the top instead of starting there. Dexter her first husband invites himself to the wedding and the wedding preparations. Also inviting their selves with a little blackmail to the wedding is a writer, and photographer, from a magazine of dubious reputation. Throw in a philandering father and a friendly uncle. We watch as they go through the motions and emotions of courting and re-evaluating their lives.
This is basically a comedy and yes it has all the actors and writers to make this a piece of cinematic art. However you will find it is just fun to watch.

I don't think that anyone reading this will need any description or review of the actual films. They are classics of British comedy and everyone knows what to expect from them.
What I don't see mentioned in the description from Amazon is the extras, so here's a run down of what you'll get for your money:

30 Carry On Films (everything excluding Carry On Columbus).
Each disc has trailers, still galleries & production/trivia notes.
All 13 Episodes of the ATV series "Carry On Laughing."
The Official 40th Anniversary documentary "What's A Carry On?"
Interviews with Sid James, Kenneth Williams, Terry Scott & Phil Silvers.
textless footage from Carry On Jack & Carry On Spying.
An alternative Director's Cut of Carry On England.
