Spartacus is perhaps Stanley Kubrick's oddest film, in that it is 'normal'. It is a Roman epic, one o0f many produced around the 1950s and early 1960s but is one of the better ones. It does not quite measure up to Ben Hur but is still very good.

Kirk Douglas, Jean Simmons et al deliver great performances and the battle scenes are more gory than you would expect, and of course there is the now legendary 'I'm Spartacus, I'M Spartacus, I'M Spartacus' scene. It makes for a very entertaining few hours.

The film falls short of the great man's other work because of two points: Firstly, it could have been directed by anyone; the obcessive perfectionism and innovatism appear absent it what is a more standard epic. ... Read More:

The early 1940's were never going to be easy and good 'propaganda' films were essential to the well-being of the Great British Public. Went The Day Well defines the British spirit, that of total belief that 'we would win the war'. The film opens showing an English village after the war, even though the war was very much still going on at the time this film was made, and told the story of the Germans buried on English soil. It goes on to show a typical English village in full swing during the war. It never ceases to amaze me that it really was like that, according to my parents, that a terrible thing like war was going on and yet 'normal' life continued as much as possible. The stereotypical differences between the English and German soldiers ... Read More:

"Oh, hard cheese, old chap!"

School for Scoundrels, that cheery, malicious comedy of one-upmanship, was based on Stephen Potter's classic of underhanded winning, Gamesmanship - Or How To Win Without Really Cheating, and its follow-up, Lifemanship. (Potter wrote several others, too.) What is lifemanship? "Well, gentlemen," says the avuncular head of school played by Alastair Sim to a new class, "lifemanship is the science of being one up on your opponents at all times. It's the art of making him feel that somewhere, some how, he's become less that you. He who is not one up, is one down."

Getting ready to sign up for the courses is Henry Palfrey (Ian Carmichael), so nice, so pleasant, so helpful that he usually finds himself ... Read More:

The film wasn't bad but neither was it very good - a bit like both Beyonce and Diana Ross in fact. I paid less than £4 new and you can't go wrong at that price.

Jennifer Hudson deservedly won an Oscar for her performance and from me she wins an award as "The Future of Soul Music". I would never have believed that Jennifer Holiday's rendition of "And I'm telling you I'm not going" could be trumped. It can and it was ! Ms Hudson has now made the song her own.

Treat yourself to Jennifer Hudson's self titled debut album released at the end of September '08.

Another award-winning performance from the great Peggy Mount! This is a brilliant comedy from the early 60s with an all-star cast.

Robert Morley plays a down-on-his-luck Colonel who employs a char lady (Peggy Mount) who also happens to work as char for a big company. Quite by chance she stumbles upon some valuable information regarding stocks and shares - she, along with her other char lady associates begin to make lots of money!

This is hilarious and gets you chuckling within minutes!

Co-stars include:

Dandy Nichols,
Jon Pertwee,
Joan Benham,
Harry Fowler,
Harry H. Corbett,
Miriam Karlin,
Marianne Stone,
Ron Moody
and a whole host of others!

A beautiful film, based on the story of a most remarkable woman.

Ingrid Bergman gives the performance of her life in my opinion, and Robert Donat and Curt Jurgens provide wonderful support. The latter provides a romantic interest. I accept that this interest was largely fabricated to make the film more appealing at the box office, but it seems all quite tasteful and unrequited to me. The Chinese cast are good too, especially the children.

The photography is stunning, using dark, rich colours. Some of those '50s colour movies have often looked dull and out of place on TV, but now on a large screen in a fairly dark room, you begin to get the effect of cinema. You can almost see the full pleated curtains of The Gaumont and The Odeon, ... Read More:

The synopsis for this prodoct is awful:

'The story of the fragile sentimentalism of a former prostitute who visits her sister only to be taunted mercilessly by her childish brother-in-law.'

First, the point of the play was that she wasn't meerly a prostitue- not to mention that we are never explicitly told that she is. Only that she slept around for shelter and food. This is not your average prostution as the synopsis makes out. Also, he brother-in-law isn't just 'childish'- what a stupid thing to say. He has been working class his whole life and is resentful that someone with an 'easy like' (in his opinion) is here lying to people and acting like she is better. He doesnt 'taunt' her like a child. He destroys her sanity further, purposly, ... Read More:

There is no escaping the fact this movie has one of the most haunting use of camera movement ,light compositions and sound editing creating echoes to explosions in harmony with the horror which is chillingly psychological rather then bloody .

No dead cats or decapatitaed skulls or limbs can alternate for the haunted look on the agonized faces of the characters as they struggle to save themselves and their sanity ,the fact it is broodingly driving them to psychosis is presented as a brilliant chess game where the 4 protagonists love and loathe each other .

They are paranormal psychics or just mediums or ordinary human beings trying to come to terms with their own dilemmas is even more haunting then the house which is magnificently evil and ... Read More:

This film is very much of its time. It is light entertainment and all the better for that. Yes perhaps the story is a bit thin, the plot just a bit predictable. But Cliff Richard, playing very much the "Elvis", as he was seen at the time, sings his heart out and acts surprisingly well. In fact the whole cast is very well done, with The Shadows (the guys on the bikes lead by the inimitable Hank Marvin) making some nice little cameo performances, and playing too. Una stubbs is of course very good too as you might expect. At the time, taking an old London bus on an adventure like this would have been seen as nigh on impossible.Exotic and glamorous too! But the whole film captures a simpler more gentle era. It even captures the now defunct works in London where buses ... Read More:
