Season Two.
Another amusing gem from the prolific Dennis Spooner. This is regarded as the first of the Pseudo-Historicals, and is one of my favourite season two stories.
I can never feel anything but sorrow for the Monk at the end of this story as he's left stranded. I know he was a rogue, as witnessed by his Tardis full of stolen art treasures, but he did help the ancient Britons build Stonehenge with the aid of his anti-gravitational lift, after all.
"Carry on" film star Peter Butterworth plays the part of the monk with amusing relish. I would have loved to have seen him as a regular recurring.....I hesitate to use the word villain, so I'll say character instead.
And by being "shades of grey" in temperament, as opposed ... Read More:

I seem to remember having enjoyed seeing this at the cinema (when it was new). Not only that, but I recall choosing to listen to the soundtrack album. (I never owned a copy of it, though, putting my money where my mouth was didn't go beyond buying a cinema ticket.) Now, I find it impossible to imagine how I could have enjoyed either the film or its soundtrack.

The few good songs are more than counter-balanced by the ones that make me cringe (or worse). Can anyone now listen to "Don't Bogart that Joint" without feeling uncomfortable (at the very least)?

It's not just the soundtrack... For another thing, I now find that the film contains no sympathetic characters other, perhaps, than the person wielding the gun at the end. And that ... Read More:

This is an unreservedly great film, in so many respects. Previous reviewers have made good points about it that need no repetition from me. What intrigues me is that The Big Country is a neglected piece of cinema (I think the Radio Times Film Guide makes this very point). It shows what an astonishingly good actor the late Gregory Peck was, a master of quiet understatement and dignity. I believe he was a co-producer of the movie, so it was something of a labour of love. Whether you view it as an allegory of the Cold War, i.e. the pointlessly destructive head-to-head belligerence of two giant opponents, or you see it as a a cracking good western, you can't be disappointed. I think what intrigues and impresses me above all is that the style of the film doesn't date at all. ... Read More:

Awesome film!

Great package with a lot of supplement material (even more as at Criterions) with two audio commentaries. One of the great sensei Tony Rayns and one of famous director Guillermo del Toro...

This film is a joy from start to finish and, as has been mentioned elsewhere, the colour and sound reproduction on the DVD are excellent. On this `special edition' there is also an interesting extra in the making of documentary - Easter Parade: On the Avenue - in which you get to learn interesting little snippets such as the fact that Anne Miller had to dance her numbers in a surgical corset due to the fact that, shortly prior to shooting the film, her husband had pushed her down the stairs and broken her back! Also, some might not have known that, but for a similar, though not quite so severe injury, Gene Kelly might have been playing the lead. The aspect ratio also means that you get the full screen image rather than it being cut down.

There is so much to enjoy: not least, ... Read More:

If that was a film of duty and bravery, the only characters who meet both demands, were British commandos of 316. All other lines seem to be unrealistic. The facility that was depicted in the movie, is not a forced labor, but rather a holiday camp. Japanese staff had all possibilities to force POWs do whatever work, but Japs don't even tried, simply observing sabotage and malingering. British officers surrender, carry conference with the enemy, build the bridge for the enemy and even celebrate on this occasion. There is neither bravery nor duty here. Colonel Saito was right that they carry no shame - and this can be (and is underscored in the film?) the virtue of the Western man - to act dishonestly and still bear no shame, even claiming to have right for respect. But the same shameless virtue ... Read More:

Box-sets of Dr Who stories connected by some theme or other seem to be slowly taking over individual releases. Some, like the Key to Time season, are excellent. Others seem to be good stories lumped together with total clangers which, on their own, would only be bought by hardcore fans. I'm afraid this seems to be one of those releases. The Keeper of Traken is a first-class tale. It looks great, has an interesting story, the decaying Master is well-played and the walking statue is quite creepy (it was played by one of Sun Hill's finest, incidentally). Logopolis, however, is a story which tries so hard to be clever and far-out and just ends up being a lot of odd things happening with very little rhyme or reason. It's only real saving grace is the regeneration sequence, which is first-class. Castrovalva ... Read More:

Amazingly, the dumb morons at Optimum still think there is a market for widescreen films panned&scanned to 4x3. Even if this is open matte, it's inexcusable - the film is meant to be seen the way it's projected theatrically. A plague on those cretinous brainless congenitally stupid idiotic imbeciles.

A great debut for both Lis Sladen and classic monster the Sontarans. Sarah Jane Smith hits the ground running, telling off robber baron Irongron & organising a rescue mission. A funny sequence has her unwisely sharing her feminist views with a medieval Delia Smith! A terrific performance from Elisabeth Sladen.
The Sontaran of course has a head that looks like a cross between a troll and a potato. It covers actor Kevin Lindsay's face and yet still lets him give a strong performance! Best of all is his relationship with Irongron. They seem to hate and like each other at the same time. They have many memorable exchanges;

"Are they all so fair of face beyond the stars?"

"Do you think your primitive features are pleasing to me?"

David Daker gives a marvellous performance as Irongron, ... Read More:
