A excellent film except for the English subtitles in the image area which disrupt the viewing experience. These cannot be defeated. I note that there is a French version without sub titles available on the Amazon web site in France and perhaps this should be listed on the UK site as long as it is made clear that there is no translation of the French dialogue. I am more interested in the photography for instance.
There used to be a version with subtitles under the image area, and many years ago I did tape this on SVHS from a TV showing, but unfotunately have since recorded over the tape.

Just have to balance these other reviews, because I bought this to add to my collection and was very disappointed. Nothing at all special here.

The Bond films vary in quality even more widely than the books, but this is still, hands-down, the best Bond film. It's more concerned with espionage than stunts, with character than supposedly cool one-liners, it has that gorgeous look of the best 60s films, it's not remotely self-referential and it doesn't have to struggle against competing spy/action franchises because it's so far ahead of the few rivals it had back then anyway. This DVD set makes FRWL look freshly-minted and is a significant step up from all previous editions. It looks good enough to eat - in fact, it's hard to imagine that hi-def could look significantly better.

I can't believe it has taken me so long to 'discover' this film. I remember it being my parent's favourite movie. I recently bought for my children as they loved the Sound of Music.

I have to say that it is the only film that has ever made me cry, and several times at that. I never thought a musical would do that.

'If I loved a you' has to be one of the most beautiful and moving love song ever written, and it is beautiful orchestrated in the astonishing 'Louise's Ballet', (check it out on You Tube). What an abstounding dance scene, I have never seen such wonderful male dancing, when a man can be so masculine and yet so graceful.

The ending with 'You'll never walk alone' is so moving and reduced me to a final flood of tears.

DVD : James Bond - Goldfinger (Ultimate Edition 2 Disc Set) [1964]
Appropriately enough the first of the series to have a really imaginative use of colour, Goldfinger is in many ways the most visually sensual of the films, the unforgettable image of Shirley Eaton's golden girl reflected in a golden glow to much of Ted Moore's cinematography. It's oozing with striking and surreal imagery, from Oddjob's menacing shadow on the hotel room wall, to the little old lady with machine gun or Bond making his entry by unzipping his wetsuit to reveal an evening one underneath. Ken Adam's production design is his possibly his finest hour, genuine architecture of the imagination that is at once both fantastic and strangely credible, maintaining a sense of scale and verisimilitude by his use of ceilings on the smaller sets.

It's also the one that ... Read More:

This is indeed classic sci-fi and well scripted. The issues dealing with "who stays, who goes" are not badly made. However, as stated elsewhere the money must have run out just before the final scene was prepared, the canvas painting foreign planet looks like a painting. Worse than an early 80s episode of Dr Who!

This has Lee Marvin in one of his best turns, even though he's a support player. The hood he plays is incredibly vicious (one scene in particular) and all in all this is a really impressive film.

The plot is great and the ending is truly satisfying. If you like old noir films, this is one to check out.

Nostalgia isn't what it used to be, and when you buy DVD sets of series you enjoyed when you were a kid, watching the show fortysomething years later can be a big disappointment. Not with Get Smart, however, which has stood up even better than I remember it. The reasons are simple; the scripts are spot-on, and the lead actors are likable, and understand that to make a spoof work, it's best to play it absolutely straight. There's not a duff episode in this set, which starts good and, once it hits its stride, gets even better. Much of the 'Austin Powers' movies derived inspiration from Get Smart, but where Mike Myers broadened and coarsened his material for contemporary consumption, Get Smart just delivers the kind of laughs that you can enjoy with anyone who's sense of humour is in the right place.

A lovely gentle way to spend the evening. Rex Harrison is marvellous as the ghost with his deep and expressive voice. George Sanders is splendidly caddish with the voice that my 11 year old daughter immediately recognised as Shere Khan. Gene Tierney was very decorative but put into the shade by the other two leads.

The cinematography was lovely and deserved its oscar nomination.

A nice gentle story.

James Mason gives two very different impersonations of Rommel, every Brit's favorite Nazi general, in The Desert Fox and The Desert Rats. The former is a solid biopic more concerned with his involvement in the plot to assassinate Hitler than his exploits in Africa, painting him as an honorable man unable to believe just how insane Hitler is until it is too late, while the latter is a standard war movie set against the siege of Tobruk slightly elevated by Robert Wise's direction but which still manages to feel overlong at an hour and a half. Richard Burton and Robert Newton are the top-liners, but Mason turns up for an extended cameo as a dastardly Nazi swine of the "Die, Englander pigdog" comic strip variety.

The only extras are the original trailers for each film.
