The screening the above reviewer refers to was indeed priceless but the films in that show were from a few years later and will no doubt appear in a future collection - so if you're looking for "Night Mail", this isn't the one to get though it is currently avalaible on the "Night Mail" DVD. This DVD features:

The Coming of the Dial (Stuart Legg 1933), Cable Ship (Alexander Shaw, Stuart Legg 1933), Granton Trawler (John Grierson 1934), John Atkins Saves Up (Arthur Elton 1934), Air Post (Geoffrey Clark 1934), The Glorious Sixth of June (Alberto Cavalcanti 1934), Pett and Pott (Alberto Cavalcanti 1934), 6.30 Collection (Harry Watt, Edgar Anstey 1934), Weather Forecast (Evelyn Spice 1934), Song of Ceylon (Basil Wright 1934), A Colour ... I am old enough to remember this from its 1st broadcast, and although it has dated a little with some poor model work showing the sandminer and some of the conventions of making television 30 years ago, in most of the important aspects, it's still very good.
The robots of the title have a wonderfully innovative design. They wear slightly pyjama/dressing gown type costumes and have a very unthreatening looking mask that when I was a child I thought resembled legendary TV presenter Bruce Forsyth. The played down look of the robots makes them all the more chilling when they turn bad and this is helped particularly by the voice of Miles Fothergill as lead Robot SV7, especially chilling as he calmly tells Sub Commander Toos she must die.

It's quite possible to enjoy this 39 Steps, but it helps to see it fresh, without any recent memory of the 1935 Hitchcock version. That one is a classic of suspense, charm, testy romance, and surprises, abetted by two fine performances from Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll. This 1959 Kenneth More vehicle maintains more-or-less the same plot line and contains some very good piece parts. While it doesn't add up to being in the same league with its elder sibling, it's good enough for a pleasant hour-and-a-half entertainment.

When a nanny Richard Hannay (More) had met accidently earlier in the day is murdered in his rooms after telling him there is an international plot involving ballistic missiles, he realizes he will be blamed by the police. So, ... Read More:

Alf Garnet has to be one of the strongest British sit-com characters of all time. The fact that he was no more than a strong version of many real life Alf Garnets always gave him a bit more weight over some of the more cartoonish characters in sit-com land. So, not only was Alf responsible for making the TV show TDUDP one of the longest running sit-coms in history, but he sort of was rsponsible for it being so one dimensional and a bit claustraphobic feeling because of Alf's tiny world.

But boy, is Alf a character that lingers in the memory! I put this film on and I was pretty staggered at how fresh his character still was, or timeless looking. It has to be, I thought, because characters like that still do exist, and probably always will. Maybe there aren't ... Read More:

It is hard to review a film that has been examined by critics in such detail over the years. Film is a very personal thing and it is for this reason I feel I should record my thoughts. My very first memories of film were of watching "The Searchers" as a small child many years ago. In particular I recall seeing John Wayne lifting a very young Natalie Wood up in that great purging of the dark side scene at the end of the film. I was mesmerised by the scenery and the great screen prescence of John Wayne, who strode the film like a colossus. A very dark colossus it has to be said. Does it still stand up under scrutiny after all these years. The answer is a resounding yes although I can see the small flaws now which through rose tinted spectacles I missed in the past.
My small criticisms ... Read More:

This beautifully shot, stylish Roman Polanski comedy horror, manages to get the balance just right between scares and laughs. Every horror cliche is explored and lampooned, but its all done with such great respect for the genre it is spoofing, that it could easily be classed as a horror film in its own right.
The main joke here is that two intrepid vampire killers, are in fact a couple of bumblimg fools, completely outwitted by the devious, clever vampires they are supposedly hunting. Its a very good joke, and Roman Polanski and Jack Magowran are both excellent as our hapless heroes.
An excellent film that is lovely to look at, and a classic of its kind

Director Melville Shavelson is known for directing some successful romantic comedies involving families; two divorced adults and their offspring's. He takes credit for not only Houseboat, but also for "Yours, Mine and Ours," casting some successful stars of the day. This family drama casts Cary Grant as Tom Winters, a widower trying to raise three children alone away from his work at Washington D.C. to country side closer to relatives of his former wife. His young children love the younger sister of their mother but Tom is not too thrilled about dating her. Instead he meets a young Italian named Cinzia (Sophia Loren) who is a socialite trying to get away from her overprotective father. Initially there is no romance between the two, and in addition, his kids are less than thrilled when she is hired to work as nanny. ... Read More:

DVD : Battle of Britain - Definitive Edition [1969]
This film is a winner on three counts. It brings together most of the best actors of a generation, it uses the real aircraft which took part and it was overseen from a historical perspective by pilots who flew in the battle, (Stanford Tuck, Douglas Bader and Adolph Galland amongst them).
It tells the story of the summer of 1940 with peerless aerial photography (no naff pearl habor CGI) and superbly well staged ground action such as the London Blitz and the airfield attack. I found all of the central characters thoroughly believable with the performances of Sir Larry as 'Stuffy' Dowding and Robert Shaw's Squadron leader being outstanding. This is a film I can drag out and watch every 18 months or so and it never fails to enthrall and move me. There should have been more Hurricanes than Spits and the Me 109's shouldn't ... Read More:

I enjoy all sorts of films and have this on both DVD and video and always try to catch it when it's on the TV as you can guess it is my most favourite film. It is flawed and can be confusing on the first few watches. It also suffers from having to deviate from the book (maybe to get it past the censors) which along with The Lady In The Lake is my favourite Chandler story.
For £5 you get a piece of cinematic folk law with both Bogart and Bacall paying off each other perfectly and some great one liners.
Bogart has been it better films but pound for pound I don't think he's been in a more enjoyable one. PS I know Casablanca fans will hate me for saying that!
