Along with Lassie Come Home, Born Free is probably the gold standard of animal movies in terms, and there's a lotto like in this story of Joy Adamson and her gamekeeper husband trying to return the domesticated lioness Elsa to the wild: the lion cubs are cute, the Scope wildlife photography still impressive and John Barry's score especially beautiful (the famous Matt Munro song was added to the end titles after the film was already on release. Where it shows its age is when the humans take centre-stage. At times Virginia McKenna can be a bit too head girl of the hockey school as Joy Adamson for a modern audience - while the Adamsons' real-life relationship was so tempestuous they spent much of their lives apart (Travers recalled that during ... Although everyone probably best remembers Gerry Anderson for "Thunderbirds", "Captain Scarlet" is considerably superior. Both the effects and the puppets are more realistic, and the the writing has a stronger darker edge.

The shows were back to 30 mins, which kept the pace up, where "Thunderbirds" could begin to drag by that point. After this, there were "Joe 90 and "The Secret Service", but neither show had that dark element, which only reappeared with the first live action Century 21 series, the excellent "UFO".

As for the DVD set, there are lots of goodies and extras which I was pleasantly surprised to find, and the image quality is clear and sharp.

I just have two gripes, hence the 4 stars. Firstly, and ... Read More:

Went to the pictures to see this one, the Regent Cinema in Poole, long gone now, has the Dolphin Shopping Centre built on where it was.
Of course, The Yardbirds were my main attraction for going to see the film, as was the case for many of my peers. Since then we have heard The Who were originally the first choice for the featured band, but they were touring and unable, hence Jeff Beck's rather uncharacteristic guitar-smashing routine, which needed to be done to fit in with the plot, (but note how the guitar changes from an expensive Les Paul to a cheap semi-acoustic model, which also smashed-up far better!)
'Blow Up' was the very first British film to feature, and get away with full-frontal nudity; this was the 1960's and things were changing FAST, ... Read More:

The 'surviving footage' of series 1 turns out to be only about 20 minutes (all from the same episode i think), so really this is a DVD of their second BBC series, the first after Eric's first heart attack and the first with Eddie Braben as writer. As such it has a wonderful freshness and excitement about it.

The 'flat sketches' and 'bed sketches' are especially good: the bed sketch in episode 2 is one of my favourite Morecambe and Wise sketches ever.

In fact, that episode as a whole is just fabulous, beginning with the opening where Eric thinks Ernie is eulogising him - only to discover that the wonderful person Ernie is praising is Ernie himself.

There are also the usual (unintentionally) bizarre musical acts (especially the French ... Read More:

It was not easy taking over from Connery especially for a model rather than an actor. Geroge Lazenby's biggest screen presence up until this movie was as the Big Fry man in the Fry's chocolate adds. Based on that lack of experience it is hard to credibly argue that this is anything less than a triumph for Lazenby.

There are a few who have commented on the woodeness of his acting but this just doesn't work as an argument when the same people praise Roger Moore, whom I think eventually retired due to woodworm. The reason for all the special effects and gadgets, that became such an integral part of the Moore era Bond movies, was that him acting ability only stretched todelivering a one-liner whilst raising his eyebrow. Considering that Moore had already featured in estabilished ... Read More:

Remember those dreams where you were being chased by a dark baddie monster and as you tried to escape everything seemed to go in slow motion - like running through treacle? Remember how scared you were.

Remember those black and white surrealist films by Jean Cocteau or Luis Bunuel that depict the human psyche so well - that plays with light and dark and are masterpieces of psycho-chiaroscuro.

Remember how few movies could create a bestselling poster out of any single movie frame, for instance Yellow Submarine.

Watch this film NOW and you will remember its genius for a life time. You will never tire of watching it again and again. It touches something deep inside us all.

I'm studying this play and bought this Franco Zafirrelli / Elizabeth Burton version as it was dirt cheap on amazon. I found it more enjoyable than the BBC version (as did my wife), even though we both preferred John Cleese's to Richard Burton's Petruchio. It gains over the BBC version by not having that awkward out of place hymn at the end (and after Shakespeare note-worthily eschewed religious arguments in Kate's final speech)! Also, the dialogue is here more clearly and comprehensibly spoken; it is just a shame it misses out the majority of it! There are a lot of visual gags to retain the interest of those who do not follow the language used. Unfortunately it also misses some of the plot points for the minor characters along the way, although it does portray the main relationship really well (doubtless feeding on the ... Read More:

Terrific stuff with a great cast and a very witty script e.g. Count Scarlioni suggests that if Romana and Tom Chadbon's marvellously thick Duggan wanted to see him, they only had to ask instead of the failed break in to his chateau. He observes "You had no need to resort to, well one could hardly call it "stealth"!

Julian Glover gives a perfect performance as the time splintered alien posing as an art thief. He has clearly got used to the finer things of his "Not very satisfactory mode of existence".
Catherine Schell gives him a marvellous trophy wife, making something special out of the scene where the Doctor plays on her doubts about the "man" she married.

We also get a lovely Eastern European scientist from David Graham and a wonderful butler-he's so violent!

Uncle Tom and ... Read More:
