In the world of movies and in the world of many, this is the definitive "War Of the worlds"

For those that may have read the book there is no justification for the many changes other than to say that someone had to take a book that could be a mini series and to do a little triage. Of course movies must have a love interest and the more controversial religious aspect (of the book where the pastor wavers in his faith) would not pass in the movie. If they made the movie today they could show a little blood sucking and not be out of line. But I am afraid that the aliens would be popping out of stomachs or exploding dogs as in the remake of "The thing" we would still not get a true rendition of the H.G. Wells story. Unfortunately it ... Read More:

A truly weird and wonderful film. It would be impossible in any review to get across what makes it so good. But believe me, and all the other reviewers of this film, you will find watching this film a memorable and worthwhile experience.

Spartacus is perhaps Stanley Kubrick's oddest film, in that it is 'normal'. It is a Roman epic, one o0f many produced around the 1950s and early 1960s but is one of the better ones. It does not quite measure up to Ben Hur but is still very good.

Kirk Douglas, Jean Simmons et al deliver great performances and the battle scenes are more gory than you would expect, and of course there is the now legendary 'I'm Spartacus, I'M Spartacus, I'M Spartacus' scene. It makes for a very entertaining few hours.

The film falls short of the great man's other work because of two points: Firstly, it could have been directed by anyone; the obcessive perfectionism and innovatism appear absent it what is a more standard epic. Also, ... Read More:

Appropriately enough the first of the series to have a really imaginative use of colour, Goldfinger is in many ways the most visually sensual of the films, the unforgettable image of Shirley Eaton's golden girl reflected in a golden glow to much of Ted Moore's cinematography. It's oozing with striking and surreal imagery, from Oddjob's menacing shadow on the hotel room wall, to the little old lady with machine gun or Bond making his entry by unzipping his wetsuit to reveal an evening one underneath. Ken Adam's production design is his possibly his finest hour, genuine architecture of the imagination that is at once both fantastic and strangely credible, maintaining a sense of scale and verisimilitude by his use of ceilings on the smaller sets.

42nd Street is one of my favorite movies. It's the granddaddy of "put on a musical" musicals, and if it seems full of cliches now it's because cliches have to start somewhere. They weren't cliches when 42nd Street opened. When young Peggy Sawyer (Ruby Keeler) has to take the place of the star, gets a pep talk from Julian Marsh (Warner Baxter) and then dances from the wings into the big production number of Shuffle Off to Buffalo...well, is there any doubt that Peggy is going to come back a star? (Even if Marsh's talk is enough to scare the tap shoes off Fred Astaire, much less little Peggy Sawyer. "Sawyer, you listen to me, and you listen hard. Two hundred people, two hundred jobs, two hundred thousand dollars, five weeks of grind and blood and sweat ... Read More:

I bought the DVD 'Candy' for a friend of mine who loves films of that era. I managed to find the time to watch it before handing it over to him. Although it definitely is not a great film, I loved watching it because it reminds those of us over 50 that life was good in the past. The film contains all of those things that are now considered politically incorrect and we, all of us, are poorer for it. The film contains a rape scene, up-skirting shots, unprofessional behaviour from the medical profession and truly humourous lines and scenes that left me rollicking in laughter. The only reason that I am writing this review is to give due credit to Ewa Aulin, without whom the film would not have been as good. She did not even get a mention on the cover. Yes, the ... I remember watching this film when I was a kid with my motorsport addicted grandfather and didn't fully appreciate the story, cast and locations but loved the action.

I purchased the 2 disc Special Edition recently and Ive watched twice since and loved it even more now that film quality has been hugely improved on visual colour and sound quality.

I can now appreciate the film more with age, the director Zimmermann, who also directed Ronin (note the car chases), James Garner (I loved The Rockford Files), Tishiro Mifune (Im a big Akira Kurosawa fan)and now the fact that I know the circuits and locations in the film, the cars and the histories of the REAL individual F1 drivers. Having read all the other reviews, I think that most of them are rather unkind to this movie.
Prior to the battle, the Somme area was a quiet backwater of the Great War with activity consisting of both sides daily lobbing a few shells into "No Man's Land" just to maintain the pretence that there was a war on. Neither side wanted to do anything but have a quiet life.
As for the soldiers being too clean, well in a non-combat area, baths and showers were available as was clean clothing.
The Somme area is chalk, so there would have been none of the mud usually associated with trench warfare.
I'm old enough to have had conversations with Great War veterans, like my grandfathers and other relatives and their perception of the war was of

DVD : James Bond - You Only Live Twice (Ultimate Edition 2 Disc Set) [1967]
You Only Live Twice has all the classic Bond ingredients that you would come to expect from a 007 movie: exotic locations, a deranged madman with a monorail (and a big cat here), gadgets, great music and a plot that involves averting World War 3.

The action is fast-paced and the bodycount is high. Interesting aspects include Bond turning Japanese, getting married (or at least pretending to), Little Nellie (the famous, lethal flying machine that Q packed into two suitcases) and help from the SIS (the Japanese equivalent of the CIA).

On the downside, the spaceship scenes now look so primitive that they're almost akin to Thunderbirds material, but hey, this was 1967 and I'm sure the producers did their best with the technology that was available at the ... Read More:

There are some good episodes, and some terrible. All the best episodes that I remember seeing on BBC from my school days are here, but I think 'the best of the outer limits' would have been better, drawn from the whole 1960's show. Despite the B/W and the rubber suits, some of the effects are quite good, and generally better than the new series, in story and atmosphere. I especially like 'The Mutant, The Guests, The man who was never born, Nightmare, Don't open till doomsday, and Forms of things unknown. Episodes which should have been left out.. ZZZZZ, Controlled experiment, Tourist attraction.
32 episodes in total.
