I first saw this film 30 years ago and was bowled over by the scenery and the actors. Recently I decided to watch it with a more critical eye and found to my surprise that I was even more captivated by the vastness of the landscape which throughout the film forms the backdrop for the tragic love story that unfolds.
At first I thought that Sharif's Zhivago was too "soft" but as the film unfolded I realised that he was "the poet". Christie was as always perfect as Lara and we shouldn't forget Chaplin as the dutiful and loving wife. She plays the role with just the right amount of pathos. However it is Steiger and Courtney who carry the film.
The sight of Courtney standing at the front of a military train rushing past civilians that ... Read More:

Outstanding. I get bored sometimes with some of the long dance sequences in classic musicals, even in great movies like Singin' in the Rain and the Fred-and-Ginger musicals, but this is one of the few films where the dance is truly a pleasure to watch. The lead actors Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer are not often mentioned much in review but the youthfulness and sincerity of their performances is key to the film's success. Those who produced the film considered many options for these two roles and as with everything else, they got it right.

Generally this adventure has much to recommend it and does, indeed provide an interesting record of the time in which it was made. I came away glad to have watched it but not clear I would watch it again any time soon. Many things grated with me, in no particular order:

* WOTAN uses the name Doctor Who explicitly several times which I found grating

* The change of companions is abrupt and the story ends just as the new companions enter the TARDIS meaning you miss the trademark 'bigger on the inside' line

* The TARDIS prop is looking very tatty (though the last time I saw the Tennant TARDIS it had a hole in!)

* The last episode has a huge battle scene with War Machines vs. soldiers which ... Read More:

This film was exciting when I saw it in 1956 in Holland, and it is just as exciting now. How can one miss with the superb talent of Michael Redgrave, the stirring music of Eric Coates, and a gripping yarn that happens to be true? Much of the fascination of this film stems from its depiction of Barnes Wallis's process of planning and perfecting the bouncing bomb, and persuading Whitehall to go along with his eccentric idea. Equally interesting are the various makeshift devices, such as the range-finding lights and the home-made bombsight.

"The Dam Busters" tells the story of ingenuity and courage during wartime. In the wrong hands, such a topic might be heavy handed, but one of the things that British filmmakers of the 1950s did so well was to deliver their ... Read More:

Next time you have a rainy afternoon to spend with a box of chocs and a video, you can't do better than this. If you hanker for a time when everyone was elegant, witty and blessed with a honeyed voice, this is for you. The music is, of course, the main focus; but there's some brilliant acting going on here as well.

Smashing.

Whilst this probably isn't the best western ever made its certainly up there amongst the top flight. It was fortunately made a few years before 'A Fistful of Dollars', which changed westerns and what was expected from them.

Take the classic Kurosawa film 'Seven Samurai' (which is given its due in the opening credits) and reinvent it in the American west. Then add the staggeringly good cast of Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, Eli Wallach, James Coburn and Robert Vaughan and what you have is a near perfect piece of Cinema. Some of these guys (like McQueen) were not the bigshots they would later become, but they are incredibly cool. Just a look is enough for these actors. For example, James Coburn hardly says a word throughout the film, and he has arguably the best scene - the ... Read More:

There is nothing I can add to the reviews for each of the individual films which rate as classics in the war film genre. I'm of that generation that can remember it being a really big event especially at Christmas when the Great Escape was on the telly and like many people can remember it scene by scene but still feel its better than most modern films relying on computer generated effects. Myself an ex RAF man its always thrilling to see the aerial scenes of the Battle of Britain made ironically with the help of the then fascist Spanish air force who where still flying Heinkels, Dorniers and Meschershmits a left over from Franco's friendship with Hitler. A bridge too far made in 1977 came later but is true to Corneleus Ryans book being historically accurate in all the details representing the true individuals ... Read More:

I bought this DVD for the kids to watch in the car during a long drive on holiday in France. I notice that all the other reviews are concerned with the quality/editing/dubbing etc, however my review is aimed at parents who need to keep their kids entertained! My children are 7 and 5, and they laughed for three solid hours. I don't know about other parents, but I was dreading the long drive, however the drive was a pleasure with this DVD playing. It was an unbelievable hit with them and they just loved it. It made for a very harmonious drive through France as we couldn't help laughing at the kids laughing in the back. A brilliant DVD that has become our children's favourite DVD of all time.
