This film was exciting when I saw it in 1956 in Holland, and it is just as exciting now. How can one miss with the superb talent of Michael Redgrave, the stirring music of Eric Coates, and a gripping yarn that happens to be true? Much of the fascination of this film stems from its depiction of Barnes Wallis's process of planning and perfecting the bouncing bomb, and persuading Whitehall to go along with his eccentric idea. Equally interesting are the various makeshift devices, such as the range-finding lights and the home-made bombsight.

"The Dam Busters" tells the story of ingenuity and courage during wartime. In the wrong hands, such a topic might be heavy handed, but one of the things that British filmmakers of the 1950s did ... Read More:

Awesome film!

Great package with a lot of supplement material (even more as at Criterions) with two audio commentaries. One of the great sensei Tony Rayns and one of famous director Guillermo del Toro...

Picture this: Circa 1975, A class of 32 bored, inner city school, O level English kids, dragged off to an arts cinema to see a showing of Polanski's Macbeth. We settled down for a boring couple of hours messing about and talking. Five minutes into the film, you could have heard a pin drop. We were hooked.
We went from complete disinterest, to shakespeare fans in one afternoon. I will always be grateful to that young english teacher (whatever her name was?) for igniting a lifelong interest in literature. If our Headmaster/parents had known what we were going to see, I'm sure the trip would never have happened! But the quality of acting was such, that suddenly we all knew and understood olde worlde english, something which carried on through other plays we studied. We were ... Read More:

Whilst this probably isn't the best western ever made its certainly up there amongst the top flight. It was fortunately made a few years before 'A Fistful of Dollars', which changed westerns and what was expected from them.

Take the classic Kurosawa film 'Seven Samurai' (which is given its due in the opening credits) and reinvent it in the American west. Then add the staggeringly good cast of Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, Eli Wallach, James Coburn and Robert Vaughan and what you have is a near perfect piece of Cinema. Some of these guys (like McQueen) were not the bigshots they would later become, but they are incredibly cool. Just a look is enough for these actors. For example, James Coburn hardly says a word throughout the film, and he has arguably the best ... Read More:

I watched this at an early age and I still love it now and sing along to the songs as much as I ever did! With a geeky Rick Moranis and a scary Steve Martin, this film doesn't fail to please.
Although it looks like a kids film younger children might be a bit worried by the man-eating plant . . .however my kids love it ( little gore-hunters that they are!) Its bright colours and cheesy songs are the perfect antidote to a boring sunday afternoon!!!

I too thought I had a slightly dodgy copy seeing some picture wobble, but I can see from other reviews I'm not alone. That said I would buy it again just as it is, my favourite is good old Windy Miller. I forgot that its not like Postman Pat's more modern animation silly me it was 1966 after all. For the moment my 2 year old daughter prefers Postman Pat, Bob, Sam and the Little Red Tractor but it was as much for me as my kids and I am not disappointed. A bargin price too, no more than a fancy cup of coffee. Go on buy it and remember how it was. I bought Trumpton too, don't miss that one either!

Gurinder Chadha produces a fantastic film with a new twist to the classical conundrum: how does an independent minded female connect with the opposite sex? Jane Austen could never in her wildest dreams imagine the outstanding Bollywood like dance and music numbers which make this film such a delightful viewing experience. Ashanti does a magical song and dance called "Take Me to Love." The Bakshi sisters sing and express appropriate sentiment in "No Life without Wife" which is a delightful song mocking the awkward attempts by Mr. Kholi, an accountant of Indian background who lives near Hollywood, who returned to Amritsar, India to find himself a wife. Despite his obvious material successes in the USA, which he keeps pointing out to the Bakshi family, he can not connect socially with the right kind of female ... Read More:
