Like Simono I too was disappointed by the Cinemascope. In fact we did not bother watching it as it only took up the centre third of the television screen.

Same with DVD of Guys and Dolls, like looking through a letter box. Did not watch that either.

Amazon should point out the significance of Cinemascope. We cannot be the only people to suffer with this.

Michael Caine stars as Charlie Croaker, a newly realised prisoner, who sets about putting into motion a plan to steal a fortune, $4,000,000, in gold bars from the Italians. Until certain events come to pass, he is unable to set the plan into motion. He sneaks into the prison, where he interrupts Mr Bridger's nightly toilet break. Once undue reparations have come to pass onto the unfortunate Charlie Croaker, Mr Bridger finds an interest in the scheme. Once he, Croaker, has selected the team, and carried out rudimentary training he transports them to Italy; where they encounter the Italian Mafia. Roger Thornhill (Grant) is mistaken for another man by a group of foreign spies and after a few unfortunate events, finds himself on the run.

North by Northwest is recognized as one of Alfred Hitchcock's finest films and with the adrenaline soaked narrative and a great central performance it is easy to see why.

Cary Grant (Charade) delivers a sensational portrayal of advertising executive Roger Thornhill, a simple man who is mistaken for someone else. Thornhill is wonderfully sarcastic, very charismatic and plaudits must go to Grant who has created an original hero, an ordinary man who turns himself into an action hero within a short space of time in Alfred Hitchcock's wonderfully realistic world.

Hitchcock's action styled ... Read More:

this is a decent war film but is certainly not a classic , firstly we have got eastwood and burton 2 great actors but the rest of the cast are nobodies and it shows.
secondly the film is set in the snow covered mountains and grey stone castle to say its got wonderful scenery is a false statement its either all white or all grey to my viewing.
the film however is fast paced with plenty of action although it seems quite dated which is strange when you see war films made 10 years earlier that are still very fresh , {bridge on the river kwia} i guess it was a star studded cast and proper scenery that made that film memorable.where eagles dare will surely entertain you for over 2 hours and should be added to your war collection but it isn't in my top 10 war movies.

I've only seen this film once, and I have no doubt that when I watch it again it will only improve. Previous reviewers who have given the film 5 stars may well be right.

It concerns the shortage of Whisky on a Scottish Island. Fortunately a boat containing 50,000 bottles runs aground and a plot is hatched to steal the liqeur from the boat. Opposed to this plan is a local Home Guard Captain, Waggett (wonderfully played by Basil Radford). He is somewhat officious and does everthing in his power to thwart there attempts to get the liquer. In fact I wondered if this was an influence on Captain Mainwaring in Dads Army. The other noteable performance is from Jean Cadell as the terrifying Mrs Campbell, who opposes her sons (Gordon Jackson) plan to marry and is reminisent ... Read More:

Ceila Johnson (Laura Jesson)and Trevor Howard (Dr Alec Harvey)play two happily married strangers who are thrown together by fate. The film is England in a bygone age ('we were very gay during lunch')innocently referring to having drunk champagne one lunchtime and being very happy. He plays a doctor while she is a housewife who takes a weekly train to shop, see a film and to change her library books. Although she appears happily married, as the film progresses, it is interesting to see the innocent way in which her(and his) feelings grow for one another, whilst always being very polite. After agonising and then deciding to go and spend some time with Alec in his friend's flat one evening and almost almost being caught, Laura decides that they must end their relationship. The film ... Read More:

68.Les Vacances de M. Hulot [1953] starring: Jacques Tati, Nathalie Pascaud, Micheline Rolla, Valentine Camax, Louis Perrault

If not Tati's best film (that honor would probably go to Mon Oncle), this 1953 effort is certainly his funniest, as Mr. Hulot's (Tati) presence in a French resort provokes one disaster after another. The movie is deliberately paced, with little dialogue and full of gentle humor. In fact, the film's innocence would be very hard to recreate today (the movie looks irresistibly nostalgic now, as it evokes a certain time and period that no longer exists). You might think that this is not a recipe for an uproariously funny comedy, but despite that, you just can't stop laughing at Tati's very elaborate set pieces. It's a huge improvement over Tati's previous film, the somewhat overrated Jour de Fete.

Night Mail, which contains several other "shorts" as well as the title film, is a short collection of digitally remastered documentaries made in the 1930s and beyond concerning the travelling postal services on our railways. It is enjoyable to watch - you can almost smell the steam - and to listen to as well, with the characteristic clipped tones of documentary commentaries from the era. I wouldn't call it nostalgic as I wasn't born until the late 1950s, but it does make you feel somewhat wistful for a time when we took pride in our services like the railways and the mail, and importance was attached to them. Other shorts in the DVD depict related topics like the electrification of the Southern Railway.

Gene Kelly's famous song and dance sequence from the title has become a household name.Added to this a young Debbie Reynolds and Donald O'Connor and you have a film that connects both musically and with dance sequences that are colourful and imaginative even today....Donald O'Connor's rendition of "Make em laugh" shows how superfit and talented he was...In the background of the silent movies the competition into talkies made the big studios have to pull out all the stops..This is a talented if not tongue n cheek look at those times....Kelly is masterful with the Broadway Melody sequence with Cid Charise dancing charisma to enhance the mood...."You are my lucky star" is one of many heart stopping hits to top the romance love tale that intertwines between Kelly and Reynolds.......a tale of ...
