I'll admit it...I like the movie. A lot. The story line -- the little orphan who unselfconsciously endears herself to others through her optimism and uncomplicated view of things -- could, in less expert hands, make a pig gag. Instead, and thanks in large part to Hayley Mills' performance, we have a sweet-natured family film which any number of adults may enjoy, especially if they watch it with their children. What I like about the movie:

1. Hayley Mills. She was a child actor who had talent and an un-pushy, natural personality. She wasn't a little tricked-up beauty queen who looked like a cheap doll. She just seemed like a nice, shrewder-than-you'd-expect kid. I doubt if the movie would have worked anywhere near as well as it ... Read More:

"In the days after it first opened in early 1964, Stanley Kubrick's "Dr. Strangelove" took on the enchanted aura of a film that had gotten away with something. Johnson was in the White House, the Republicans were grooming Goldwater, both sides took the Cold War with grim solemnity, and the world was learning to be comfortable with the term "nuclear deterrent," which meant that if you blow me up, I'm gonna blow you up, and then we'll all be dead. "Better dead than Red," some said. Others said the opposite. The choice was not appealing. The Bomb overshadowed global politics. It was a kind of ultimate hole card in a game where the stakes were life on earth." Roger Ebert

This is a collecton of three Dr Who stories, all linked by the presence of the Silurians and/or Sea Devils. The Silurians is an early Jon Pertwee tale which sees the Doctor (working for UNIT) investigating power failures at an underground research centre. Before long he has come across a race of intelligent reptile-people who once inhabited the Earth and have been revived from their age-old suspended animation. This is an example of Dr Who at its best - thought-provoking, intelligent, well-written, and with some serious issues to raise. In The Sea Devils, also with Jon Pertwee, the Doctor visits his old adversary the Master who is currently beng held in a high-security jail. However, it seems another prehistoric race, this one amphibious, have emerged ... Read More:

With its plot involving the Doctor returning to Gallifrey to claim the position of presidency, this could have been an intriguing look into Time Lord society - a follow-up to The Deadly Assassin, showing Gallifrey now going downhill. Unfortunately it doesn't work out like that. The beginning of the story shows promise, the Doctor coming across as quite sinister, and the scenes set outside the Time Lord city show a side of Gallifrey never before seen. But overall it just descends into tackyness. The alien invaders (Vardans) start off as transparent pieces of tin-foil before they transform into cliched 'troopers' who look as though they've been lifted from a '50s sci-fi action serial. Then there are the Cockney-accented, blundering Sontarans in two episodes of ... Read More:

Humphrey Bogart is on top form in this John Huston-directed classic film from 1941.

The age of the film is not really a factor with this new Special Edition, as the restored picture and sound are faultless and catapult the action onto the screen for maximum enjoyment.

The plot centres on the quest to obtain an elusive statuette (as named in the title of the film), but the item is really a 'MacGuffin' since the story is played-out to involve all the matters associated with getting it, rather than the Maltese Falcon itself being significant.

This allows the detective Sam Spade character played by Bogart to dominate the film, and the quality of his performance clearly demonstrates why he subsequently rose to stardom. He is simply magnificent ... Read More:

With apologies to Amazon I bought this set recently from HMV for under £50
and without a doubt it is the best purchase that I`ve ever made. I grew up
watching Laurel & Hardy so it takes me back to my boyhood days as much as
anything possibly could. The presentation box is well made and the contents just fabulous. Don`t bother with the coloured remakes as they
aren`t particularly good, stick to the Black & White films, and in any
event it gives the movies more of a historical feel to them.

The look that both Oliver and Stan give the cameras when something has gone wrong is pure gold. I`m sure Morecambe & Wise used Laurel & Hardy
as their role models. In this day and age of stress and financial worry
this set will ... Read More:

Really enjoyable; Classic 70s campy fun-Baker on top form, great debut from Lalla Ward. If you want a serious plot/acting extravoganza-swerve, if you want a bit of a giggle and light hearted fun-then it's a must have. Noone beats the Baker!

i fell in love with the glenn miller music when i was a 10yr old during the war and have remained one ever since, i must have watched this film about 15 times both on t.v. and on this brilliant dvd. jimmy stewart acted his part superbly but i think june allyson was absolutely amazing, in the final scenes when she was listening to the broadcast from paris after glenn was reported missing was one of the most emotional scenes in any film i have ever seen it even brought tears to an hard hearted so & so like me.

Much has been documented about the mental breakdown of Coppola when directing modern war epic Apocalypse now. The amount of material shot (pardon the pun) was enough to make a film running at over at week - but several edits later we are left with a masterpiece of around two and a half hours in length.

Logistically speaking the film was a nightmare to get finished, after late minute recasts, Martin Sheen played the lead role whilst suffering from alcoholism and nearly died of a heart attack. His poor health lead to his own brother stepping in to double for him in many scenes. The script was constantly re-written and the ending was changed several times over in subsequent edits. The film went massively over budget, the sets were wrecked during monsoon season, the helicopters used were actual ... Read More:
