Bruce Willis is always in danger of being a parody of himself, most often typecast as the maverick save-the-world cop a-la-Die Hard, but in fact he has tried to explore other character portrayals in recent years. Yes, he's a cop again in this one, but he never looked as if he was about to do any yippee-kai-yays at any time. Thanks mainly to a solid writing base from a Robert Crais novel of the same name, Hostage is a pretty good thriller and not as formulaic as many might expect. The odd thing though is that there were a few signature images that reminded me of other seemingly unrelated films, notably The Crow - one of the hostage takers, a psycho named Mars and played by Ben Foster, looked bizarrely like Brandon Lee's portrayal of Eric Draven ... 184.L.A. Confidential [1997] starring: Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, James Cromwell, Kim Basinger

DVD : L.A. Confidential [1997]
Curtis Hanson has managed to direct a film which captures the late 1940's in both style and spirit. Often films depicting the glamourous side of this era immerse themselves too much in the styles and fashions of the time, rendering the actual characters superfluous to the movie. Not here though - the characters drive the film, blending in perfectly with the directing style swaying effortlessly to capture the gritty and the classic-Hollywoodesque, the guy has done his homework.

Risks were taken by casting relatively unknown non-Americans in the two major roles, a rare thing by a Hollywood studio. It's hard to imagine anyone else but Russell Crowe as the fiery `Bud' and at times Guy Pierce seems a bit awkward as `Exley' - but this isn't ... Read More:

I agree with others that this series failed to live up to the previous 2 seasons, but it is still worth a look. While I found the Sark/Lauren relationship a little hard to believe, the ongoing Sloane saga leaves you wondering just what exactly the man is up to.
My biggest disappointment I confess is patriotic, while I'm unaware of how authentic the details are in relation to other countries, the Episode pertaining to Belfast was rather poorly researched, showing footage of Dublin rather than Belfast, and a pub scene that was more akin to the 1940s that the 1990s! I'll not even mention the accents!
I bought the box set in the end due to poor coverage on British TV and it was definitely worth every penny. This show will definitely remain ... Read More:

CSI was one of those show's I'd heard of but never watched. Then that magazine came out and bought the first issue and watched the pilot episode and the following one. After that I was hooked. 2 weeks was too long to wait for the next episode so in a strange fit of confusion (desperation?) I bought the first part of Season 3 and proceeded to sit down and watch all the episodes over the course of a month.
Each episode is gripping developing the characters and story with startling pace. The characters are likeable, and Grissom is one of those characters who come along in a series once every decade: Mulder, Captain Picard, Gil Grissom.
This first part of the series is contains the first part of seaon three, but is lacking in the extras department. ... Read More:

This Season is a return to the superior entertainment of Seasons 1 and 2 (I thought Season 3 was only 'OK', with too many below-par episodes).

The scripts have more of a bias towards the CSI team as personalities and, most importantly, the crime plots are once again superior to anything else on TV; the best example in Part 2 being 'Early Rollout'.

One factor of the DVDs which continues to be a disappointment are the episode commentaries. They are, with the exception of 'Bad to the Bone
', awful. Rather than give interesting insights into the episode production, there is too much friendly chit-chat between the contributors and way too much time spent saying how good someone was or what a great job so-and-so did.

If I were reviewing the show itself, I would give this 4 or 5 stars. However, what disappointed me was the absence of subtitles on this release of the show. Maybe it's just my TV, but sometimes the dialogue is diffiulct to hear, especially in scenes where there is a lot of background noise. This means I have to strain to capture all the words and nuances, rather than being able to sit back and enjoy the narrative as it develops. Moreover, the choice to release it withour subtitles obviously makes it pretty much impossible for anyone hearing-impaired to enjoy. A rather cheap, cost-cutting ommision from Showtime, whose boxsets are usually excellent...
