This film is part-story and part-sermon, and the sermon is better than the story. Some parts are exclusively sermon such as the screen messages at the beginning and the end or the moralistic pontifications of the committee that deliberates on the diamond trade. In terms of length, most of the film consists of the story of a young soldier of fortune turned diamond smuggler, but the basic moral has been enunciated so clearly at the start that nothing in the tale of Danny Solomon and Maddy can be understood as independent of it, and that is all to the good.

Far and away the best things are the horrific sequences of civil war in Sierra Leone, and I have not yet seen a TV documentary on this topic that equals them for sheer impact. ... Read More:

All I can say is that this programme is brilliant. I have just purchased season 4 from the UK and totally enjoyed every episode. Well acted, well written with good story lines. All I want now is season 5 to become available. How long are going to have to wait? Not too long I hope.

Wow! Just when I thought that this show couldn't get any better at the end of season 1, season 2 proves me wrong as this season is just simply incredible.

It begins with the hatch being opened and the first meetings with some new characters, so it's not short of excitement at all. Some questions are answered as the series goes on and some more are created. More characters are introduced whilst others are killed off, which can be quite surprising as some scenes are just so unpredictable. So many more background stories giving insight into the characters' backgrounds are given in the flashback sequences, going even further back into their pasts than just the few days leading up to the flight. Some character cross-overs are also developed ... Read More:

The best French film in 20 years? A masterpiece? Both of these suggestions are quite laughable and grossly overstate the importance of this film pairing in the context of French cinema as a whole which is without much doubt the greatest cinema in the world.

Both films are rather banal, bland pedestrian adaptations of Marcel Pagnol's book (at best)and provide little in the way of cinematic poetry to justify their own existence. Claude Berri brings very little to the stories which isn't there in the books so why not simply read the book instead? Okay, there's is nothing wrong with faithful adaptations which bring nothing new or fresh to the silver screen but truthfully these stories are not that exciting or original to begin with. You'll have seen ... Read More:

Got to say I started watching this without knowing it was a Scorsese film. It took me about half an hour before I started thinking "Something familiar about all this" Quick look on the back of the DVD and yep, Scorsese.

Sorry but all this rubbish about him being some great director, it just amazes me that nobody seems to see through his pathetic one dimentional films. The usual 'wise guys' 'kid growing up in 'da neighbourhood' with the 'local hoods' 'trying to make it good' everybody talking out the side of their mouths in some laughable pathetic attempt to rip off 1930s gangster movies. Someone made a point of Scorsese being 'anti religion' I would have to ask what does Scorsese have against black people? In almost every film he produces blacks/latinos pretty ... Read More:

I first encountered West Wing on C4, but not being a dedicated enough TV viewer I only caught the occasional episode. It was only after discussing the series with my husband who likes a bit of politics that I decided to invest in the box set for series 1 (we are now on series 6 ... and just waiting for an excuse to finish the set!)

We are both true addicts now.

I can't say that I am very political, but I enjoy this series.

The casting is excellent & the interactions between the characters are complex & interesting. There are a central group of characters, but this is a sizable group and it might take you a show or two to get them straight - the Presidents PA is one of my favorites, I really hope that there is someone like that in the ... There are television series and then there's "Foyle's War." If one had to choose a production that depicts what the Brits are best at, it's this show.

So what are they best at? In my opinion, it's a natural leaning towards understatement combined with a steady growth in suspense. Several plot lines are developed until the conclusion which always leaves you thinking about ethics and politics. Alfred Hitchcock was a master of it and so is Anthony Horowitz, Foyle's creator.

The action takes place during World War 11, mostly around the town of Hastings. Foyle is Detective Chief Superintendent Christopher Foyle who wants to contribute to the war effort. His duty is to solve crimes on the domestic front and he always introduces himself as "a police officer."
