To collect money for an investment, Jerry (Macy) sets a fake operation up for the kidnap of his wife, but it doesn't go according to plan. The Coen brothers have made a name for themselves over the past twenty years and this 1996 film, written and directed by the pair cements them into the highest class of different and brilliant filmmakers. The unusual plot opens with "This is based on a true story" when in fact it isn't, which will set the tone for a bizarre but highly intriguing viewing, made even more strange as the plot unfolds and the direction and cinematography are established. I bought this DVD due to my interest in the Boosh, and I have to say it's the best DVD I've bought in ages! Absolutely fantastic! Very original, dark humour, and Matt Berry and Rich Fulcher make a great double act. Lots of great catchphrases and interlocking sketches, and some very strange characters! Me and my sister have watched it over and over, and even took it on holiday with us! Pure original brilliance! But as other reviews have said, it is definately not family viewing.

This is an interesting film; a good solid whodunit combined with a bit of Americans-in-combat-angst. Usually such a mixture would result in a mess, but in this case they fit together wonderfully well. There are lots of good performances linked to two main ones from the female cop (Charlize Theron) and Tommy Lee Jones as the institutionalised ex-military policeman. If the film has a theme (other than just a damned good plot) it is to do with the lack of male communication. This is admirably communicated by Jones in his at times robotic performance. Is it grief at the death of his son or is a life of polishing shoes and creasing trousers just ingrained, the story does not feel the need to tell us; which is very much part of the theme? Lets face it none of us are critics so if you like still game at all the youve got to get this... and the others.....and the christmas specials... in fact if these guys dont make another series i just dont know what i'll do..... i know its psycho patter. :) Have resorted to watching dear green place now which, dont get me wrong, is very good just different. You cant beat still game its a must have dvd collection, too cheap if you ask me.

I bought the thorn birds series 1 dvds as a gift, and was about to send them back as she said they where not complete when I realized they are double sided dvd's. So she is going to check them out.It would have been nice of Warner Bro to have put a note on the case, perhaps the ink cost to much any way watch this space because if its wrong Ill be back to tell you. ps app it's quite racey!!! prob why my x watched it when I was at work...

Lovely, just lovely christmas movie. Cary Grant is the most wunderfull angel and Loretta Young is just lovely as the bishops wife and David Niven a perfect grouch. Gets you in the spirit.

The comparison in quality that one reviewer made on this page between Middlemarch and The Wire might seem far-fetched to anyone yet to see the series. It's not. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't expect ever to see TV of this excellence again. I've certainly never seen anything as good before. As with others, I envy anyone approaching this work of utter genius for the first time.

By now you will have read that this is one of the most fantastic animations of all time. However, may I suggest that you do your utmost to purchase the original Japanese version and watch it with subtitles, rather than with the silly dubbed American voices. It takes on a whole new character watching it in the original Japanese.
