For some reason I enjoyed this series far more the second time around. As is usual with more recent BBC wildlife series, the actual camera work is visually stunning. Shots are posed for effect and I spent most of the time wishing for a bigger screen than my poor old CRT telly. As most of the stars of the film are slower moving than the usual subjects of current wildlife documentaries, it was a pleasure to see David Attenborough daring to handle snakes, frogs and lizards, annoy nesting alligators and don a specially coated visor to demonstrate how a cheesed off snake spat venom. I saw the whole short season of ITV Austen adaptations from which the three featured here were chosen and the main mystery to me is why it was that by far the the best of them - 'Persuasion', with Rupert Penry Jones and the excellent Sally Hawkins - was not included in this set. This 'Mansfield Park' is especially poor, partly because Billie Piper - (a decent actress to be sure) is miscast. Even her looks, with her trademark bleached blonde hair and black eyebrows, are simply wrong for a lead Austen part. For Mansfield Park, look for the greatly superior version starring Frances O' Connor as Fanny Price.

If an Australian seller hadn't misrepresented their Crosby,Stills, and Nash DVDs as Region 1, when in actuality they were Region 2s, I never would have invested in a Regions-free player, and began broadening my horizons, thereby finding this GEM to be not only out-of-print at home,but only available in Blu Ray ! We've never had a 2 disc edition that I'm aware of, and when this one arrived (QUICKLY I might add), my son and I devoured it ! Nearly,or just over 2 hours of extras is a real treat, on top of the crystal clear, vivid widescreen print of the film itself. Thank you AmazonUK.

Frequently hilarious, never boring,unpredictable and well-written, filmed,directed and acted.But it stretched credibility a little too far and if, like me, you don't approve of beauty pageants for young girls,and of the bad swearing in the presence of children,you still won't be overly impressed by what on the face of it is advertised as something of a family movie!

Having enjoyed the first series (mostly) I looked forward to watching the second series. Sadly, although the first 3 episodes weren't too bad, from episode 4 onwards it was all downhill. The characters became predictable and the quality control on the plots disappeared. Sadly I bought the 3rd series with the 2nd. I won't be buying the 4th.

I first saw this film 30 years ago and was bowled over by the scenery and the actors. Recently I decided to watch it with a more critical eye and found to my surprise that I was even more captivated by the vastness of the landscape which throughout the film forms the backdrop for the tragic love story that unfolds. At first I thought that Sharif's Zhivago was too "soft" but as the film unfolded I realised that he was "the poet". Christie was as always perfect as Lara and we shouldn't forget Chaplin as the dutiful and loving wife. She plays the role with just the right amount of pathos. However it is Steiger and Courtney who carry the film. The sight of Courtney standing at the front of a military train rushing past civilians that he neither sees or hears. ... Read More:

The Illusionist is the most sumptuous recreation of the Austro-Hungarian empire I have ever seen on film (actually, its the only recreation of the Austro-Hungarian empire I can recall seeing on film) and as such takes place in the twilight age of European empires and hereditary dynasties, where science promised a brave new world, but magic and mystery still seemed possible. Underneath all the pomp, circumstance and enormous twirling moustaches, however, the Illusionist is a an old fashioned love story. Will the poor but honourable Illusionist, Eisenheim (Edward Norton, an always watch-able actor) win his childhood sweetheart, The Duchess Sophie (Jessica Biel) from the evil bully Crown-Prince (Rufus Sewell)?
