The story of Lorna Doone - of love between a man and woman on opposite sides of warring factions - has been filmed many times but this BBC adaptation has an eye-watering cast of TV and film favourites and stunning production values.

Told in two 75 minute parts, we see John Ridd (the Heath Ledger-ish Richard Coyle) set his sights on the Grand-daughter of the outlaw Doone family, played by Amelia Warner. Set at the end of the reign of Charles the 2nd, this drama has romance, action and plenty of twists and turns and with a PG rating is suitable for the whole family.

Amongst those familiar faces are Jack Shepherd (Golden Compass, Wycliffe),Barbara Flynn (When The Boat Comes In), Michael Kitchen and Honeysuckle Weeks (Foyles ... Read More:

This is definately one my favourite films of all time.

I loved the "feel" of this movie. It's slow but it's not boring, quite the opposite. And this is the beauty of this film. For, despite the fact that it is not an action-packed film, the story is stimulating, dramatic and full of impact and yet it progresses effortlessly. It is a beautiful story, sweet, sensitive, melancholic and inspiring.

All the actors are absolutely magnificent and because of that it is so easy to relate to the characters despite the fact that the storyline is quite extrordinary.

In particular Gerard Butler is absolutely amazing in this film. Not only is he unbelievably gorgeous but his acting is fantastic too. Not a lot is said in this ... Read More:

As you can tell from the other people's reviews this movie is brilliant!!
But what is not said (at least I don't think so! I didd'nt read all 100+ reviews!) is the picture quality! i'm using a Toshiba 47" 1080i LCD HDTV with a PlayStation3 with HDMI connection.

For a DVD it's got AMAZING detail! I'm surprised they managed to fit this 3 hour film with this quality onto a DVD!! I have a collection of around 500 DVDs & this must be in the top 5 of best picture quality in my selection!

Buy it! you won't regret it! (or wait for the Blu-ray)

Mother and daughter, both outsiders, blow into stuffy old-fashioned French village (cobbled streets, quaint houses, romantic lamplight, no cars, no uncouth farmers) and bring with them the power to release the claustrophobic and straight-laced community from its inhibitions - not the first time on screen that this formula has been employed. What is unusual is the medium they use. Delicious and irresistible chocolate confectionery tempts everyone, and turns then into better, more liberated people. In the end, good defeats bad, love triumphs over hate, and everyone is released from cramping conventions to do their own thing. Very much a message of our times, in other words, and perhaps none the worse for that - though whether self-indulgence is always the best way forward ... Read More:

I wish to buy the complete collection but am not sure which one to buy. Besides the difference in quality as ppl have pointed out, I also notice the cast to be different. The 2008 version casts Jeremy Brett as holmes, does it have Edward Hardwick/David Burke as Watson? Please comment and I'll place my order. Thank you - Ravi

I have just finished watching this set. I had seen some early episodes originally but watched all again. It is almost a bit "Lost on Mars" as the early series now do seem dated or rather perfectly portraying that time - the early 1990s. I found myself watching the clothes of DCI Tennison and of course the ageing of her in her character with all the trials and tribulations faced by a woman in the police force and in her personal life. She is a demanding , admirable yet imperfect character and it is heart wrenching to see the last episode when retirement beckons. Absolutely fantastic performance by Helen Mirren and of course the rest who make their characters just so believable!

DVD : Criminal Minds - Series 2 [2007]
Having really enjoyed the first season of criminal minds I decided to get season 2 without seeing it on TV first (sadly they don't show it on channel 5 here in the UK anymore). I'm so glad that I did. It is billiant. Just like the first series it has a mix of interesting storylines and further character development from the first season. I enjoyed every episode of this season. Season 2 wasn't without it's shocks either, in the episode 'The Boogeyman' the identity of the UNSUB was absolutley shocking and I never saw it coming. I cannot recommend this season highly enough, it's fantastic. I hope season 3 will be released in the UK very soon.

I first saw this film in the cinema, and am so glad it is now out on DVD. As a big fan of war films, Female Agents is easily the best of this year, with cracking performances from all the main leads, especially Sophie Marceau.

Set in 1944 during World War II, the film tells the story of four women resistance fighter given the mission to rescue a British geologist. Based on a true story, the action rarely lets up with a fantastic script complemented by gorgeous cinematography. Watch out for the subway scene - it's a classic!

It's a film which could only have happened in the 1970's; Bob Guccione, owner of Penthouse magazine and flush with wealth after riding the sexual license of the preceding decade set out to remake himself into an artist. He certainly succeeded in creating a film which maintains a reputation thirty years on (and how many do that?), but what reputation? And did he create art? Not a chance.
On paper, Caligula has a lot going for it; the sets and visual design are sumptuous and must have cost a fortune and the casting is a list of a-class thesps including John Gielgud, Maccolm MacDowell and Peter O'Toole. The only thing that lets it down is that it really isn't a very good film. Guccione brought everything he'd learned from making porn movies to a big budget production and it shows. The script is wooden and ... Read More:
