I loved the first Hellraiser when it first came out in 1987.
On repeated viewings it's flaws became all the more apparent, but because of it's cult appeal and personal nostalgia value it has remained a grotesque favourite of mine.
Now whereas I appreciate the fact that films 2 and 3 are indeed splendidly uncut, the first film doesn't seem any different from my video edition.
During the 'story so far' section at the beginning of Hellbound, and the international trailer as well, we get to see the uncut destruction of Frank. But it isn't like this in the first film. Mind you this is just a niggle in what is otherwise a good box set, and considering I managed to obtain it for a very small price from elsewhere (sorry Amazon) ... Read More:

The simplest way of describing the plot of this film is The Hills Have Eyes set in the woods. All the characters are there from the creepy petrol station attendant to the mutated cannibals.
The difference is that the cast are 'young and hip' and the characters are all of the same age group, it is a bit more sexed up than The Hills Have Eyes and is more likely to appeal to the teenage market than that film did.
This is not a contradiction, as The Hills Have Eyes is one of the best horror films ever made.

There are alot of scenes designed especially to make you jump and is better watched in the dark with a group of people. There are some amazing death scenes and the acting cannot really be criticised.. if you like bloody ... Read More:

'Rosemary's Baby' is without doubt Roman Polanski's best movie.
Still after fourty years this film scares me. Not in the kind of gruesome (torture-porn) kind of way that the Saw franchise do, but in a deeply psychological way, in the spirit of all the great twentieth century horror films. Rosemary (Mia Farrow) is the young married woman who's just moving into an upstate New York appartment block with her husband, actor Guy (John Cassavetes). The pair soon get to know their neighbours (mainly) Minnie Castevet & her husband Roman Castevet (Sidney Blackmer).
Rosemary's baby is a very scary film, not gruesome (sometimes mildly explicit) but it has that claustrophobic eery feeling & after the first half of the film the feeling that ... Read More:

This is actually a remake of a remake of a remake-1933 Mystery of the Wax Museum was the original-Vincent Price's 1953 House of Wax is def the best of the three-but this is not as bad as I thought it would be-in fact it was pretty good after a slow start-can't believe they actually built a whole town in an empty field just for a movie though!

A group of teenagers are targeted by a serial killer exactly one year after they ran over a man.

In 1996 Scream was a film that reinstated the slasher horror genre and Keenan Ivory Wayans' spoof is a true and funny testament to that horror classic.

Modern spoofs often contain slapstick humour, stereotypes and a fairly predictable plot. This is evident with this 2000 hit and is pure silly entertainment that you can't help but love and laugh along with despite the conventional approach.

Recent releases such as Disaster Movie have brought the spoof genre to an all time low. Filled with unfunny parodies, attacks on celebrities and ultimately silly plots, it's a wonder why they are still being made.

In the nineties ... Read More:

Casting the Runes is one of the best stories of possibly the greatest Ghost Story writer, MR James. Filmed moderately successfully in the 50s as Night of the Demon, here we have another modernised version of a true classic story.

Unfortunately its just not a very good one. Iain Cuthbertson, a fine actor, is given almost nothing to do, apart from a risible scene where is disembodied laughing head is superimposed on a globe.

Elsewhere the acting is adequate but the story is needlessly changed and unfortunately usually in a poorly realised direction such as the bedroom haunting sequence.

All in all an ill advised adaptation of a story that deserved better.

The long-awaited third part of the Suspiria/Inferno "trilogy"
This is HUGELY DISAPPOINTING. None of the invention, flair, or visually interesting qualities of the other two.Predictable and tired.
If you are an Argento fan there are many other of his films to buy before you need to even consider this one. An at best average horror film that just sadly confirms that Argento is well and truly off-the boil, as he was starting to show with his other recent offerings.
If you want more Argento you can spend your money better by getting hold of "Profondo Rosso" or some of his earlier stuff. Most of his films are interesting and worthwhile up until "Opera"(or "Terror At The Opera") in the late eighties with the possible exception of "Phenomena" (or "Creepers"). Even ... Read More:

One of the greatest movies from the 1930s!

Margaret Lockwood stars as a passenger on a train who is befriended by an elderly lady (Dame May Whitty) after receiving a bang on the head. The plot thickens when Miss Froy (Whitty) goes missing, but no one on the train will admit to ever having seen her.

Lots of suspense in this, and not a boring moment! This can be watched over and over and still remains as fresh as the day it was made! This classic suspense movie will keep you on the edge of your seat the whole time! Includes a galaxy of stars, with some outstanding performances - particularly those of Catherine Lacey (the nun), Linden Travers, Dame May Whtty and of course Lockwood herself.

Also stars a young Googie Withers. ... Read More:

I liked Antal's "Kontroll" when I saw it on the TIFF festival a few years ago, and this one is another positive experience.

The most common letdown with films like these are the too-stupid-to-live 'heroes' and 'heroines' that the film demands a continuous string of idiotic decisions from, since there could not conceivably be any other way of pushing the plot forward and/or create suspense.

Not so here - the main characters are surprisingly (but still within the believable range) resourceful in the face of danger, and thus you are actually able to give a damn if they die or not. The flick is suspenseful and spooky enough to leave your hunger for such suitably satisfied.

Minor inconsistencies like having wall-to-wall carpets in your kill-otel ... Read More:

This film apparently enjoys a reputation as a 'cult classic'. While I've seen worse films, it's not really what I'd call a great film, or even a good film. This Spanish made production has the feel of a spaghetti western with its unconvincing performances and bad dubbing. Here's the plot: English scientist Christopher Lee, intent on proving the theory of evolution, brings a neanderthal ape like fossil discovered in China on board an oriental express train. Peter Cushing plays another scientist, whose curiousity is responsible for unleashing the monster on the unsuspecting passengers, who are rendered into zombies after encountering it. Telly Savalas makes an appearance as a sadistic drunken cossack towards the end. Can they save the remaining passengers from a similar fate? If you can be bothered ... Read More:
