The Brood was David Cronenberg's third feature release and the film that got him noticed outside Canada and the horror genre. With heavy weight actors Oliver Reed and Samantha Egger, Cronenberg's excellent script - Oliver Reed said it was the best written part he had had since The Devils - and a story more psychological than outright horror, though there are a few gory scenes, Mr Cronenberg was onto a winner. This is a film that stays with you long after the final credits have rolled. There are many influences playing through the film, the brood children are reminiscent of the 'dwarf' from Don't Look Now, Howard Shore's excellent strings only score a nod to Bernard Herrman's score for Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho.
The picture quality is okay ... Read More:

DVD : Cloverfield (2 Disc Special Edition)
Like the Matrix 10 years ago Cloverfield has set a new standard for action cinema. Movie snobs often dismiss genre movies like this one as low brow. But the genius of Cloverfield is it's structure; the whole movie is an exercise in keeping an audience on the edge of their seats and it works. Every time it looks like things couldn't possibly get worse they do, then just when things look like they've calmed down a tad the next shock hits. None of which sounds that impressive, until you see just how well it's done here.

Although there's nothing oscar worthy from the cast the films is buoyed along by some convincing performances and humor in particular is played just right: it's funny but not so funny that you relax. The story pulls surprisingly ... Read More:

I found this series rather disappointing. Whilst the first 3 (especially the 3rd season) were all tremendous and series 4 was thoroughly enjoyable this one is much darker. As a personal preference I like a big dollop of humour in buffy and in this season there's a distinct lack of humour. Some of the episodes are great but I found Dawn so irritating in this that she marred a great deal of it and the misery of Joyce Summers' death, although portrayed very well (particularly interesting is listening to Joss Whedon's commentary), made for a rather dismal season. Glory is a great villain and Spike's character is really starting to develope but it lacks the sparkle, fun and much of the shock factor of previous seasons.

DVD : A Warning To The Curious (BBC Ghost Story For Christmas) [1972]
All the BBC `Ghost Films' seem to be photographed by John McGlashan, and a fine job he does of this M.R. James chiller. First broadcast Christmas Eve 1972 and set during the Great Depression. 'A Warning to the Curious' combines the 'big skies' of Norfolk with attempts of an amateur historian from the capital (Paxton) to find a lost Saxon crown of England. Although the majority of the action occurs outside, James' plot, together with the music combine to give a pleasing claustrophobic effect. The scene involving Paxton's initial success, positively crackles with atmosphere. Forget digitalisation, this is how you film a ghost story! Roll on 'The Stalls at Barchester' - another James classic.

Land of the Dead is a film that you can watch once, and once only. It was enjoyable enough but it is no classic. Even though the gore is quite good and there is nothing wrong with the acting, it just didn't feel like the usual zombie flick. Rent it or buy it cheap.

like most of roger corman's films based on edgar allan poe, there isn't much taken and used from poe's original stories.
however, that doesn't make a lot of difference as corman's work with vincent price is some of the best i've seen in horror films.
this, their second film together, is a specially written screenplay that only includes a reference to poe at the end with the swinging pendulum. a marvellous and imaginative scene.
the plot is a conspiracy to drive vincent price insane by convincing him that his wife isn't quite so dead after all. over the course of the film, you will witness price give one of his definitive performances. as the supporting cast don't add up to much, it is left to vincent price to carry the film acting wise and he does so effortlessly. ... Granted it's not "Horror of Dracula" or "Dracula: Prince of Darkness", But this has to one of the best because Christopher Lee has more to do in this one than in any of the others, He has more screen time than in the first film. I like this one also because Dracula has some cool moments in the film such as branding poor Patrick Troughton's back with a red hot sword. This film deserves another look, Christopher Lee dispite his low opinion of the film has more dialogue and screen time than in the early ones or the later ones.

Great Film

Will it be in high definition? Unless it's a error on Amazon's part, to me one disc does not seem adequate for a complete season; shortened as it was due to the writer's strike. If true it sounds that this will really be a standard definition release with all the episodes put on one compact blu-ray disc. After all the, UK releases of the dvd boxsets were inferior to the those in the US (in regards to extras). The american blu-ray release on the Amazon US will apparantly be three discs - which sounds about right. Proceed with caution.

I guess I just don't get it. I was expecting something dark and twisted from this movie but it just didn't deliver, and it was almost as if the film-makers themselves had given up the ghost at the end and allowed the whole project to sink into farce (circa the thoroughly inappropriate hillbilly music as Mad Billy-Bob Cletus or whatever his name is kicks his mini hoverboat into gear as if to chase down Scooby Doo and Shaggy).

The film seems to exist for two blink-and-you'll-miss-them set piece moments in the final third (you'll recognise them when they happen) but that's nowhere near enough to sustain a credible story or to make up for the tedium of everything that happens once the two central characters meet up with the backwards psycho-family who are destined to make their lives miserable. ... This is a 1926 classic of silent cinema. This new life that has been given to the film comes from the fact that the domestic (German) version has been restored and we can compare it with the export version that had survived. It is absolutely striking how the domestic version is tighter in the shooting, the taking and the cutting. The angle is slightly different and better, the contrast is a lot finer and more pronounced, which is very important for a black and white film. The cutting packs up many sequences and this increases the dramatic dimension and effect of the film. Apart from that you will not recognize any running version of the myth. The film is essentially centered on the love affair with Gretchen, but a long first part concentrates on the fight between God and Satan to conquer the world. Faust is nothing ... Read More:
