DVD : The Flesh and the Fiends [1959] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
"This is the story of lost men and lost souls. It is a story of vice and murder. We make no apologies to the dead. It is all true". This the lurid legend that affronts your eyes in capital letters, in the pre-credit sequence, of this relatively obscure masterpiece. The Flesh and the Fiends [1959] (REGION 1) (NTSC)

The setting is 19th Century Edinburgh at Shepperton Studios.
This film deals with the infamous exploits of grave- robbers Burke & Hare, and the less heard of (to me anyway) university professor surgeon Dr. Knox. These characters have prominent references, in the annals of historical sociopathology; Burke & Hare were no less nasty than Jack the Ripper; also much of what they got up to is open to conjecture, ... Be sure to notice all the standard Sci-fi actors and even the Beaver's mother "Kelston's Secretary" (Barbara Billingsley).

This movie was well done with just the right amount of spookiness and has a kid's perspective on what is happening. This is not a kid is smarter than his/her parents movie. There are lots of strange happenings and lots of tension. I will not go into the details as if you have not seen the movie it is more fun to be surprised.

Right from the beginning Little David MacLean sees a flying saucer land in the sandpit behind the house. He tells his parents. They being good parents check it out for him and naturally find nothing out of the ordinary. Maybe he had a nightmare or maybe the nightmare is just beginning ... Read More:

i remember seeing this series on t.v. when i was just a kid and it scared the living beejaysus outta me.i cant see what all the fuss was about now.you can see many similarites in the opening scenen with other horror films such as 28 days later, the stand, the crazies etc. there aren't any jump out of your seat moments but the atmosphere and exposure of a selfish human nature in a "survival of the fittest" setting is dark and is in itself a horror. the triffids themselves are a new species of plant that came to earth via a comet and are like big lumps of broccoli who poison and then eat their victims.99% of the population of the world is blind after a comet burned out an optical nerve in the eye, and therefore the human race is being hunted down by plants ... This is the original film version of the Mary Shelly book "Frankenstein", and in spite of it somewhat simplistic dramaturgy, it should be a must for all fans of monster movies or classical cinematography. The effects and make up are, for their time, excellent. There are some plot changes, shifting the moral of the story somewhat, compared to the original story. Where Shelly's moral was very contemporary, even today, namely that man should not temper with the natural order of things, emphasizing the dangers of ability without humility, the movie's moral is more along the lines of "if you're going to play God, make sure you get a qualified assistant"...

This is old school English horror, with maximum emphasis on performances and atmosphere. The film is divided into several creepy tales regarding death and doom, and with a cast lead by Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee this is a quality flick. Recommended.

DVD : Nosferatu (1922) - Two-disc set
Students of the horror film know that it really hit its stride with Nosferatu, Murnau's version of the Dracula story. With Max Schrek (was he or wasn't he??) playing the lead role to perfection, and some astounding use of light and shade, this film set the standard for years to come.

Murnau really got inside the vampire legend, and drew on many sources, although primarliy of course he used Dracula, which cause many problems after the film was released.

I have had a double disc version by Eureka for some time, and wondered if the new version was necessary, but after reading some of the reviews here I took the plunge, and very am glad that I did. The film is presented in only a single version this time, rather than the option of Black & White or Sepia, but the ... Read More:

DVD : Dead of Night/Queen of Spades [1945] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
Essential double bill of two of the finest films of the 40's.

Dead of Night(1945)Much heralded pormanteau of horror tales directed by Charles Crichton and Cavalcanti amongst others is justifiably remembered for the final segment - Michael Redgrave and that dummy! The tales are linked together by the gathering of a group of people at a country mansion, one of whom is convinced he knows everyone present because he has met them all in his dreams.
Variable in chills, each tale is memorable in it's own way with Robert Hamer's "Mirror"segment being particularly creepy.Redgrave's tour de force performance in the final tale is the icing on the cake,

Queen of Spades(1948)Slow moving but utterly riveting supernatural tale(based on a Pushkin short story)is a forgotten gem with ... Read More:

DVD : The Abominable Snowman [1957]
The Abominable Snowman treats its subject matter with the kind of respect usually reserved for something far more serious than a low-budget film about the mythical Yeti. It would have been easy to allow the whole production to sink to the level of exploitation, but it never does. The horror is subdued and really only surfaces in the final act. The movie is not without its creepy moments as the men fear for their lives in an alien landscape of ice and mountains. The remainder of the intelligent script focuses on the relationship between the scientist and the showman and asks the question "Who is the real monster?"

The Abominable Snowman is an unusually subdued movie from The Studio that Dripped Blood. Released the same year as The Curse of Frankenstein and a year before Horror of Dracula, The ... Read More:
