DVD : The Sorcerers
The Sorcerers was Michael Reeves's second film, but his first for Tony Tenser's Tigon productions. Popularly classed as a horror film, it transcends the barriers of such a definition and presents a fantasy drama that poses questions about the role of voyeurism in the cinematic experience. In particular, it raises questions as to how far removed is the voyeur from the sometimes visceral action to which he or she is spectator, and how the extension of the voyeuristic process could contaminate the viewer, directly involving them in the proceedings.

The most initially striking theme of The Sorcerers is that of the contrast between the world of the old and that of the young; particularly the idea of youth being wasted on the young. ... Read More:

Everyone must know that this is the last Lugosi film where the great man has a substantial role, playing the mad Dr. Vornoff, his actual last role being "The Black Sleep" AKA "Dr. Cadman's Secret",where he is relegated to playing a mute servant ( I discount "Plan 9..." for the known reasons. ), fighting rubber octopus, dealing death from a dentist's light and chewing his way through dialogue written by Ed Wood, Jr.

I love this film, it's my favourite of all the Ed Wood movies, and when I saw it available on DVD, I jumped at the chance to buy it. What a disappointment! The quality is just awful; the picture looks like 25th generation from video, and the coffee ... Read More:

This is a classic movie and Shows Hawks great style but if you've ever read John W Campbell Jr's Book Who goes there?

You'll realise that John Capenters version is more accurate than Hawks version (the book outlines that the creature shape shifts and there is the suspence of not knowing who is or isn't the alien life form).

I love them both but john capenters version for me is up there with Alien as a classic.

From the era when great acting and a great storyline were key, this is a classic. Good use of tension building, fabulous gritty acting, solid cinematography. You can't go wrong. Enjoy...

For years I had heard about the legendary Tod Browning film "Freaks" that so upset audiences it was banned in Boston and Great Britain. I had read the short story "Spurs" on which it was based and when the film was finally screened on campus I talked my roommate into going with me. Most of the people sitting around us knew nothing about the film and when I told them about it everybody started to get nervous. Then the film began...and we all loved it! My roommate and I both had crushes on Daisy Earles who plays Frieda in the film, opposite her brother Harry as Hans.

The story is quite simple: Hans and Frieda are a pair of midgets in love, but Hans thinks that Cleopatra (Olga Baclanova) the bareback rider is beautiful. Cleopatra plays with Hans' affections until ... Read More:

Classic 60s horror starring Joan Crawford and Diane Baker. The teaming of these two great actresses would prove so successful, they were reunited again just a year later to make the classic TV movie 'Della' in 1964.

Strait-Jacket is a great suspense thriller/horror with a fabulous story and plot. Full of nerve-jarring moments with a shock at every turn. It also boasts a sensitive script about two different aspects of being both a reformed murderess, and her daughter, and its damaging and long-term effects on their lives.

Also stars Leif Erickson and George Kennedy, and a young uncredited Lee Majors.

This film has a great twist to the ending, and is not to be missed.

glad to finally see something of lon chaney.
for a long time , the only films i have seen were "phantom of the opera" and "the hunchback of notre dame."
thankfully, that has all changed for the better.
thrilled to see a reconstructed version of the lost film "london after midnight" and also "the unknown," both directed by regular chaney collaborator tod browning. the inclusion of "laugh, clown, laugh" is also an added bonus. but the choice "ace of hearts" lets everything down slightly.
this could have been a six dvd set of films like "the monster," "the unholy three,"(both versions) "west of zanibar," "tell it to the marines," "HE who gets slapped" etc.
the documentary on this collection is one of the best and most detailed i have ever seen: ... Read More:

DVD : Gorgo [1961] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
I first saw Gorgo in the early 90s and I fell in love with it. I have always been a Godzilla fan and I also love giant monster movies in general - dinos, ants, spiders, scorpions, etc...

The only thing that's ever annoyed me about the film is the use of American stock footage used to represent the Royal Navy - I mean F100s are intercut with Royal Navy Hunters to confuse the viewer, and the use of WW2 US Navy submarine footage.
Daft.

But the core of the film is still fab, and I love it to bits. Nice to see London gettng mashed for a change.

A nice touch is the CGI Gorgo used in the animated menu... how cool is that?

DVD : Black Sunday [1960] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
This 1960 film by the great Italian horror director Mario Bava stands out as a dark jewel of supernatural terror and also generated a distinct sub-genre with films such as the wondrous 'Horror Hotel/City of the Dead' and 'Witchcraft' following in its wake: Mario Bava was a lover of 19th century Russian literature and here we have his unique adaptation of a story by Gogol, a ravishing tale of vampirism, satanic evil and undead witches in the mist-wrapped environs of old Moldavia. Where this film really wins is in its evocation of a wonderfully crepuscular atmosphere of gothic romanticism and what the poet Shelley called 'the tempestuous loveliness of terror', embodied to perfection in the sinister beauty of Princess Asa, played brilliantly by Barbara Steele. We are taken from the pyres of the ... Read More:
