DVD : The Fall of the House of Usher /The Pit and the Pendulum (REGION 1) (NTSC)

PLEASSE NOTE: THIS REVIEW IS FOR 'HOUSE OF USHER' ONLY:

An alternative title could be: 'Mad Madeline'!

'The Fall Of The House Of Usher' is an odd film. It's comparatively short (just one and a quarter hours) yet can seem considerably longer. A meagre cast with very little happening for most of its duration. However, this is based on a novel by Edgar Allen Poe, (which I have not yet read but intend to) and I should imagine that the book is probably more atmospheric. Not that the movie did not try to capture this, but somehow the house interior for me was just not 'creepy' enough. The guy's distinctive 1950s hairstyle did not help...

This is a movie for some reason I watch time and ... Read More:

DVD : Frankenstein: The Legacy Collection (REGION 1) (NTSC)
Universal Studio's great black and white "horror" films from the 1930s and 40s were put together in special themed collections called "The Legacy Collection".

These collections were themed movies, about 4 to 6 films in each collection, that were focused around the one "big hit" and it's "Sons of" features.

The Frankenstein Collection is probably the best of the collections, containing more films that were of better quality overall than the other collections. Frankenstein was a big hit, and they actually had better scripts and actors in the "Sons of" films than the others.

We start with the classic Boris Karloff Frankenstein. This film examines our right to be "god" when it comes to "life and death". Karloff ... Read More:

DVD : Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man/House of Frankenstein (REGION 1) (NTSC)
With the success of The Wolf Man in 1941, it didn't take Universal long to trot out a sequel; the following year, Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man not only capitalized on the success of everybody's favorite werewolf, it also brought in Frankenstein's monster, thus becoming one of the first Universal monster cross-over films. Lon Chaney, Jr., returns as the ill-fated Larry Talbot, and the legendary Bela Lugosi dons the makeup of the Frankenstein monster - this fact alone makes the film intriguing.

Four years have passed since Larry Talbot's death. He's been lying in his crypt covered in wolf bane, not bothering anyone, and then two grave robbers happen along. The light of the full moon calls Talbot back to life, and he flees into the night ... Read More:

DVD : Daleks: Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. [1966] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
It's hard for me to be objective about this film because it remains such a vivid memory from ten years ago when I first saw it, but in terms of its great production design and atmospheric location filming, it's streets ahead, and indeed far more impressive, than its woefully cheap small-screen counterpart (The Dalek Invasion of Earth) from the Dr Who series. The Dalek saucer, with its concentrically turning platforms, is one of the finest spaceships in cinema history and the various scenes of the Daleks gliding about a ruined London are brilliantly executed. Call me mad, but I even like Bernard Cribbins.

A definate yes to buy this film - even 38 years on from its first big-screen appearance it still looks delightfully impressive.

This fall firmly into the category of 'So bad its good' films. The acting is terribly over the top, but it does provide some laughs.
However, with the Tartan release, the sound quality (especially in the outdoor scenes) is awful.
Still worth a watch.

DVD : Repulsion [1965]
I've seen "Repulsion" quite a few times over the years, and it never gets any less absorbing to watch in spite of knowing the outcome.
Catherine Denueve is incandescently beautiful in it but this all masks her real persona which I guess is shown in the early photograph of her when she was just a child. The rest of her family, involved all together in the event of having their picture taken, but her, aloof, distant, in the background, staring into space, not really wanting to be a part of it. I think this showed a real understanding on the part of the director of the type of personality she had that would later erupt into murderous rage as a result of her paranoia and mental isolation. Sad. Disturbing. And quite possibly one of the most brilliant movies ... Read More:
