DVD : The Return of Dracula/The Vampire (REGION 1) (NTSC)
It really is one of the best monochrome transfers from films of this period (the mid-late 50's) that I've seen. It is very sharp throughout on both these films. Subtitles are also provided. They both have the same writer/director/producer team.

The Return Of Dracula had, or has, a certain cachet, not quite cult, but a fond respect ffrom horror movie fans. Unfortunately it hasn't worn very well and, while for the period it was moderately chilling, it now seems stiff and mannered. I've also come to hate (the portrayal of) 50's teens in these horror movies with a vengeance. I'm surprised the kids at the time didn't burn down the cinema for the patronising way in which they were presented (unless American teens really were like that). ... Read More:

DVD : Venus in Furs [1969]
Mesmerizing, haunting, sexy, and colorful are some of things Jesse Franco has confidence in doing while ranking this as one of his most assured pieces of work. Provided that this film was also recommended to me it has also open up a different path for me to expand my horizon (along with his other films I've seen so far). In this story we see Trumpeter Jimmy Logan's (James Darren) life starts to unravel when he discovers the dead body of Wanda Reed (Maria Rohm) on the beach one day. He soon remembers that she was the woman at the party he attended a few weeks before. He had witnessed three of the guests as they sadistically beat and raped her. Now in Rio, Jimmy discovers that Wanda is still alive. Jimmy refuses to leave Wanda now that he has been ... Read More:

One of Hitchcock's (unfairly) forgotten films, living in the shadow of his more famous British works such as The 39 Steps and The Lady Vanishes, Young And Innocent remains one of the highlights of his pre-American era and is one of the sweetest movies in his entire canon.

A film actress is found dead on a beach by Robert Tisdall (Derrick De Marney), but as he was seen running away from the body, she was strangled by the belt of his stolen raincoat and she's left him some money in her will, the police arrest him. Managing to escape from the courthouse, after some first aid treatment by the police commissioner's daughter Erica (Nova Pilbeam), he goes on the run and subsequently meets up with Erica again who, although initially reluctant, ... DVD : The Illustrated Man [1969] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
We all know that in most cases the movie is a poor reflection of the book it is based on. This is in movie about stories within a story. It is very well paced to give you a feel for what is happening and time to anticipate what may happen. Rod Steiger has time to really act instead is being a cameo. The stories are naturally imaginative. The sets are well designed to bring out the nuances and display the implications of the character's actions. In all this is a very well designed movie for 1969.

A man is encountered who has skin Illustrations all over his body. Each illustration represents a tale from the future. The illustrations come to life and tell a tale of doom or impending doom. In this way ray Bradbury can tell related but different ... Read More:

DVD : Journey to the Center of the Earth [1959] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
Collectively, Verne's novels were called "Les voyages extraordinaires", and this film, whatever licenses have been taken with the source, aspires to that. While the prelude to the journey is too long (we even have to endure Pat Boone croon a tuneless number), once we've plunged into the Earth, the film takes on an air of wonderment.

Cast chemistry contributes in a big way. James Mason, a brooding but stout leader. Pat Boone, surprisingly effective as an eager student (but not so successful as a Scotsman). Arlene Dahl, a ravishingly beautiful damsel who is sage and sane and only distressed when she really really needs to be. Real-life Icelander Peter Ronson, a tall man's man -- who loves his pet duck. Gravelly-voiced American Thayer David, pure ... Read More:

DVD : The Spiral Staircase [1946] (REGION 1) (NTSC)

The original and best.

A claustrophobic picture with rather wooden performances from most of its cast - especially that of George Brent, who wasn't really such a great actor, but popular in his day. This also stars Elsa Lanchester - a great actress, who when not the leading lady, was able to do wonders with 'bit' parts. Here she plays the rather drab looking housekeeper. However, Elsa, contrary to popular opinion, was in fact a very attractive lady! (she should be seen in her more glamorous roles of the thirties) Her very pretty features can be seen here in one subtle shot when she is seen by candlelight in profile, as she knocks a candle to the floor when down in the cellar with George Brent.

Ethel Barrymore gives an award ... Read More:

This is a film is about a doctor investigating why some people who die under really scary circumstances have broken spines. Well that's because when you're scared a centipede like creature begins to grow inside you, starting at the base of the spine and getting so big that it can wrap it's pincers around the spine, thus cracking it. The Tingler can only be stopped by screaming. This is from director William Castle, who made House on haunted hill and was famous for his playing tricks on the cinema audiece, such as planting women dressed as nurses in the theatre in case someone had a heart attack from being too terrified. I expect that in the 50s it was a fabulous experience, and it is still great fun today. ... Read More:
