Bride of Frankenstein is one, if not THE best, Universal horror movie made in their golden era of the 1930's. A direct sequel to Frankenstein, but in nearly every way a better movie. This is a much more artistic work. Sure there is still some hammy acting and the not so special effects are, by comparison to today laughable.

However, as a movie, this has many things that most modern horror films lack. The cinematography is marvellous. There are dozens of moments in the film where I wished I could have stopped the DVD and taken a copy of the image on the screen. No more so than near the end when the bride appears. The lighting in this scene combined with the photography produces a marvellous almost surreal effect. It also has a few ... Read More:

This film is in Swedish (but of course!) and not English as listed by Amazon on their product details. And the English subtitles are for HARD OF HEARING which means that there are the most irritating intrusions describing onscreen action. This realtively minor inconvenience does a disservice to the master. Read what you will into MGM's penny-pinching in opting for this release. Better to stick with the superior Tartan issues. And if you're a really superficial Bergman afficionado - and there are many of us out there - then the packaging on the Tartan Bergman Collection has the added allure of being color-coordinated so that you can impress your friends and other philistines with a great phalanx of really rather attractive yellow-spined DVD boxes.

In the 23 century a rescue ship is sent to the planet Altar to look for survivors of an earlier expatiation. They find nothing except an ominous voice warning them not to land. What would you do?

Notice that the investigating party is the captain, first officer, and medical doctor. Can your say Star Trek?

This movie has many plusses as both sociological (people like to compare this to Shakespeare's "The Tempest"). Visual from the color of the sky to the accoutrements of Altiara (Anne Francis). The speculation on what would you do in this situation. And the introduction of Robby the robot who went on to be a star in other movies and a guest on many TV programs.

The movie was great I watch it over and again. However it made a major ... Read More:

As a child i remember watching this film and being stunned with its visual effects and fast moveing plot line, I have come back as an adult to watch this film again (which is always difficult, as things are often best through the rose tinted glass of youth) I was disapointed, yes I will admit, it IS a classic, but when you compare it to The Day the Earth Stood Still and It Came From Outer Space, The Invisible Man, it is weak, flat and obvious, plus as an extra downside, Steve McQueen is TWENTY SEVEN years old in this film but he is playing a eighteen year old "teenager" this is sooooo unbelievable and im sure in one or two shots you can even see the starts of silver-grey hair on the sides of his head!

Sometimes nostalgia is best left in the past.

"Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night, may become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms. And the autumn moon is bright."

The 1941 version of "The Wolf Man" is one of the most important Universal monster movies that is a classic even if it is not a great film. That is because pretty much the entire mythology of werewolves, from the transformation beneath the full moon and the silver bullets to the appearance of a pentagram that marks the next victim of the werewolf, comes from this film. Consequently, screenwriter Curt Siodmak did for werewolves what Bram Stoker did for vampires, also working to take established folklore and then add a few creative twists.

The story of "The Wolf Man" should be well-known even to those who have yet to see the film. Larry Talbot (Lon ... Read More:

I was really looking forward to watching The Killer Bees on dvd as it was one of the few Amicus films I hadn't seen before. When the film was originally released it flopped badly and it's easy to see why. The basic plot concerns an ailing singer who is sent to a remote island to recover after collapsing during a recording session. While on the island she discovers someone is using fear to control a swarm of deadly bees.

When the film started with an extreamly dodgy song I knew I was in for a tough time. The film plods along at a snails pace. The special effects are pitiful even for the time (the film was made in 1966)the bee attacks are particually dissapoiting. The cast that includes Hammer favorite Michael Ripper and Guy Doleman (Thunderball and The Ipcress File), who give passable performances given the ... Read More:
