This film is something of a triumph for Bela Lugosi, who steals the plaudits for his maniacal depiction of love crazed Poe obsessed surgeon Dr Vollin. After saving the life of a 'beautiful' young lady, Jean Thatcher, following a road accident, he falls in love only to be spurned by her and reprimanded by her father ( the canny Judge Thatcher. Did the scriptwriter like Mark Twain or something?). He decides to exact revenge using Poe derived torture devices with the help of escaped convict Edmond Bateman(Karloff), who comes to him seeking face altering surgery but is deliberately disfigured in a ploy to enlist his assistance.
Ignoring some absurdities, for example, Jean Thatcher's frankly crap ballet dancing show lauded as brilliant, or ... Read More:

This review is of the orchestral 2 disc edition.

The title of my review pretty much says it all. The print is quite clear & watchable, but there is a moderate jerkiness in the entire film to motion that looks like somehow a percentage of frames was dropped in the original mastering process, or perhaps the transfer started out as NTSC (though I have no idea why that would be) & there was a poor NTSC to PAL conversion. The bit rate is quite high, that's not the problem.

If anyone has info on this, I'd appreciate your sharing it.

Fine film.

I have been looking forward to this release for a long time. I have the Region 1 version, but I can only watch this on my computer, so to have a version I can play on my TV would be great. What a disappointment, it's FULL FRAME and not in the correct widescreen format it should be in. These DVDs are for a specialist market, who expects certain standards; and the correct format is one of them. I hope they put this right for future releases, otherwise it's back to watching my Region 1's on the computer.

the mummy films have never been hammer's most successful franchise, even though this one has peter cushing and christopher lee in it.
the plot is rather vague and too little happens until about the last 25 minutes, then suddenly the film picks up.
to be fair, there are some good scenes. it somehow feels reassuring to see christopher lee have some dialogue before he becomes mummified; the music is better than i thought; peter cushing is his usual dependable self.
however, despite the fact that the 1932 version by universal has its shortcomings, that film had boris karloff to help make it a success. karloff gives THE definitive portrayal of the mummy/high priest. he easily made it his own, but christopher lee is perfectly ... Read More:

I agree with all those who love this set. It's brilliant."Night Creatures", however, is not really a horror film, more a costume drama, with Peter Cushing and Oliver Reed as 18th Century smugglers. It was originally released as a second feature to "Phantom of the Opera",(also in this collection),under the title of "Captain Clegg". It's actually a pretty faithful adaptation of Russell Thorndyke's novel "Doctor Syn".This may be of use to those who didn't recognise the American title.

This film is great on all levels - the performances of course, especially a very young Maureen O'Hara before the studios removed the naturalness, the music, the sets - but what really stands out is the cinematography and mise en scene: you feel that this is what medieval Paris was really like. Scenes such as the one where Quasimodo brings a caged bird to Esmeralda, or when he leaps on to the giant bell - "she made me deaf" - have tremendous emotional power. This movie should be available for Region 2, along with other greats of the 30s such as the Lubitsch films.

"Mother Joan of the Angels" (= "Matka Jonna od Aniolow") is a strange 1961 film directed by Jerzy Kawalerowicz, that manages to show the way in which faith, superstition and fanaticism can mix.

The story that this film tells is set in 17th century Poland, and it is, to say the least, unusual. The main character is Father Suryn (Mieczyslaw Voit), a priest that arrives to a convent in order to exorcise a group of nuns possessed by the demon. Their leader is the abbess, Mother Joan (Lucyna Winnicka), a beautiful young woman that seems to embrace the choice of being possessed by the demon, given that she is aware that she cannot be a saint, and would rather be damned than like everybody else. Father Suryn begins to care too much for her, having his faith ... Read More:

Twilight Zone The Movie was always a special film for me as it featured a return to the twisted universe of Rod Serling for veteran composer Jerry Goldsmith, who had cut his teeth on low budget shows of its kind in the late 1950s and early 1960s. When the film was announced on Blu Ray this was good news, as by and large the four segments still stand up well as stories (if you can stand the over-sentimental mawkishness of the Spielberg entry and the dire "acting" of the prologue in the car anyway...)

However, early reviews and even the reverse of the Blu Ray box stated that the sound was in mono, which put me off a lot. However, upon purchasing this I was delighted to find that the audio is actually a superb 5.1 mix, with Goldsmith's powerful score pushed to the ... Read More:

Yep it is the standard big bug 50's sci-fi with a Mexican twist.

We start with the obligatory narrative and a description of what may come. The narrator thinks that volcanoes are evil and bring destruction to farm land. To this land comes a pair of archaeologically strange doctors. They discover a fallen girl (that was just horsing around) and one of the scientists falls in love. The other states "man is born single."

I will not reveal the ugly threat that you already see on the cover. However I think they used them again in "Attack of the Giant Crabs". Also it is fun to look at the technology of the time; they use huge walkie-talkie's, flash cameras (out of flash range), and Bakelite phones. The annoying part of the movie is the kid that will not stay ... Read More:

CAT PEOPLE:
Says psychiatrist Dr. Louis Judd, author of The Anatomy of Atavism, to Irena Reed, his reluctant patient. He is describing the things they have just talked about. "...and the cat women of your village, too. You told me of them, women who in jealousy or anger or out of their own corrupt passions can change into great cats, like panthers. And if one of these women were to fall in love, and her lover was to kiss her and to take her into his embrace, she would be driven by her own evil to kill him."

For me, this overripe bit of psychiatry from the suave, moth-eaten Tom Conway as Judd is about as good as Cat People gets. The film is a Poverty Row B movie which was made on a shoestring in 1942, when theaters played two-movie bills with cartoons, short subjects, ... Read More:
